  • Surface soil is one of the most important resources that have many functions for human needs such as conservation of water resource, purification of contaminated materials, and productivity of food or energy. However, the surface soil is a limited resource that cannot be recovered readily for a long time once it is lost by erosion. In Korea, the Ministry of Environment enacted the notification on the investigation of surface soil erosion and corresponding countermeasures. As the results, database of soil quality assess criteria (biomass, groundwater recharge, habitat, carbon storage, buffer, and soil loss) was established, and the web-based system that can evaluate surface soil conditions was developed. However, non-experts have difficulties in using the system because the system requires in-depth knowledge about soil qualities. In this study, the Web Geographic Information System (GIS) watershed-based surface soil information system was developed to improve usability of the system and accessibility of soil quaility database. The system provides the current condition of surface soil characteristics and GIS-based soil data at selected locations. The users are able to download soil quality data in different districts, watersheds, and special regions allocated by TauDEM module. The system developed in this study would valuable surface soil information for studies of soil quality and its environmental effects, and thereby contributing to establishing more appropriate and robust soil conservation laws.

  • Cause of contamination in the study area nearby Jang Hang Refinery is dust scattering in refinery stack, and soil washing treatment is one of the proper technologies for soil remediation in this area. Site conditions frequently limit the selection of a treatment process. A treatment technology may be eliminated based on the soil classification or physicochemical characteristics of soil. This study was assessed the soil washing efficiency by conducting of soil characteristic analysis in the vicinity of Jang Hang Refinery Stack within a 2 km radius. Also, it was decided about remedial range with comparative analysis of As in soil by Korean Standard Test Method before/after revision, whereupon As concentration in soil showed a increasing tendency after revision. As a result, the soil washing using the size separation of soil was determined through identifying of As species in the soil. In this site, only particle size distribution and water content of soil can provide the initial means of screening for the potential use of soil washing.

  • Soil erosion due to climate change is one of the global environmental issues. Especially, Korea is vulnerable to soil erosion as the frequency of extreme rainfall events and rainfall intensity are increasing. Soil erosion causes various problems such as reduced farmlands, deterioration of water quality in rivers, etc. To these severe problems, understanding the process of soil erosion is the first process. Then, it is necessary to quantify and analyze soil ersoion using an erosion model. Soil erosion models are divided into empirical, conceptual, and physics-based models according to the structures and characteristics of models. This study used GSSHA (Gridded Surface Subsurface Hydrologic Analysis), the physics-based erosion model, running on WMS (Watershed Modeling System) to analyze soil erosion vulnerability of the CheonCheon watershed. In addition, we compared the six sediment transport capacity formulas provided in the model and evaluated the equations fir on this study site. Therefore, this result can be as a primary tool for soil conservation management.

  • This study is conducted to investigate the possibility of the utilization of the mixed soil formed by mixing stone sludge, bentonite, and residual soil as a soil sealant sustaining both stability and capacity in the barrier system. And the mixed soil formed by mixing stone sludge, river sand is conducted to investigate the possibility of recycle. A series of tests were performed on the mixed soil(stone sludge, bentonite, Cement and residual soil) to evaluate basic properties such as compaction, compressive strength, permeability of these materials. and the stone sludge-river sand mixed soil were performed the discharge capacity tests.

  • Soil deformation on the off-load ground is significantly affected by soil conditions, such as soil type, water content, and etc. Thus, the soil characteristics should be estimated for predicting vehicle movements on the off-load conditions. The plate-sinkage test, a widely-used experimental test for predicting the wheel-soil interaction, provides the soil characteristic parameters from the relationship between soil stress and plate sinkage. In this study, soil stress under the plate-sinkage situation is calculated by the DEM (Discrete Element Method) model. We developed a virtual soil bin with DEM to obtain the vertical reaction forces under the plate pressing the soil surface. Also parametric studies to investigate effects of DEM model parameters, such as, particle density, Young's modulus, dynamic friction, rolling friction, and adhesion, on the characteristic soil parameters were performed.

  • An investigation was conducted on the effects of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus, Glomus etunicatum on the formation of soil aggregate and mycorhizal development in the roots of Robinia pseudoacacia seedlings in coal mine tailings and forest soil. G. etunicatum formed mycorrhizas by 35.1 % in coal mine tailings and by 48.9 % in forest soil. Its infection was the typical Arum-type forming inter-cellular hyphae and intra-cellular arbuscules. Ergosterol contents were 3.20 ppm in forest soil and 1.92 ppm in coal mine tailings. The formation of soil aggregate per 50 g pot soil was 19.6 g and 9.5 g in inoculated and noninoculated forest soil and 16.5 g and 11.0 g in inoculated and non-inoculated coal min tailings, respectively. In conclusion, G. etunicatum inoculation increased the formation of soil aggregate both in forest soil and coal mine tailings, but was less effective in the latter.

  • The purpose of this study is the understanding to changes in the characteristic of soil structure and classification, atterberg limits, undrained shear strength and consolidation of clayey soil dependent on pH of soil pore water. A series of tests including consistency tests, uniaxial compressive tests, vane tests and oedometer tests are performed on. The test results indicated that pH changes in the soil pH resulted in changes in the soil structure and classification, stress-strain behavior. Specially, when pH is conditioned to 7, liquid limit, undrained shear strength and preconsolidation pressure are the largest.

  • This study was objected to figure out the soil microarthropod fauna in forests with different flora, and to elucidate how environmental factors affect the diversity of soil microarthropods. Relationships between the distribution density of soil microarthropods and environmental factors were correlated positively with organic matter and C/N ratio. By the calculation of the contribution coefficients, organic matter, amount of precipitation, C/N ratio, and soil moisture were found to be major environmental factors that affect the distribution of soil microarthropods.

  • The purpose of this study is to provide the technical information of the stability change and behaviour characteristics in case upward direction of soil nailing is installed. Generally, the soil nailing which installed in case of vertical excavation or for the purpose of the slope stability is installed between 5 to 15 degree of downward direction. The downward direction of the soil nailing method has lots of advantages such as the increase of the stability, the convenience of the grout compared to upward direction of soil nailing. Even though the upward direction of the soil nailing has the disadvantages in terms of the stability and the grout construction, horizontal displacement tends to be decreased.

  • In order to analyze movement of soil moisture, Time Domain Reflectometry(TDR) with multiplex system has been installed at the Bumreunsa hillslope of Sulmachun Watershed to configure spatial-temporal variation pattern considering seasonal characteristic. An intensive surveying was performed to build a refined digital elevation model(DEM) and flow determination algorithms with inverse surveying have been applied to establish an efficient soil moisture monitoring system. Soil moisture data were collected through an intensive and long term monitoring 380 hrs in November of 2003 and 1037 hrs in May and June of 2004. Soil moisture data shows corresponding variation characteristics of soil moisture on the up slope, buffer, main channel zones of the hillslope which were classified from terrain analysis. Inferences and limitations of measured soil moisture data were discussed in conjunction with flow characteristic through terrain analysis.
