As fingerprinting method, k-nearest neighbor(KNN) has been widely applied for indoor location in wireless location area networks(WLAN), but its performance is sensitive to number of neighbors k and positions of reference points(RPs). So artificial neural network(ANN) clustering algorithm is applied to improve KNN, which is the KNN/ANN hybrid algorithm presented in this paper. For any pattern matching based algorithm in WLAN environment, the characteristics of signal to noise ratio(SNR) to multiple access points(APs) are utilized to establish database in the training phase, and in the estimation phase, the actual two dimensional coordinates of mobile unit(MU) are estimated based on the comparison between the new recorded SNR and fingerprints stored in database. In the proposed algorithm, through KNN, k RPs are firstly chosen as the data samples of ANN based on SNR. Then, the k RPs are classified into different clusters through ANN based on SNR. Experimental results indicate that the proposed KNN/ANN hybrid algorithm generally outperforms KNN algorithm when the locations error is less than 2m.

In this paper, the timing estimator based on the principle of the best linear unbiased estimator (BLUE) is proposed in OFDMA uplink systems. The proposed timing estimator exploits the phase information of the differential correlation between adjacent subcarriers. The differential correlation can extract the information about timing offset and mitigate the distortion of the signal caused by the frequency selectivity of channel. Compared with conventional methods, the proposed estimator shows more accurate capability in estimation. In addition, the estimator is hardly affected by the distortion caused by the frequency selectivity of channel. Simulation results confirm that the proposed estimator shows a small error mean and a relatively small error variance. In addition, the performance of the estimator is evaluated by means of SNR loss. It is shown by simulations that the SNR loss of the proposed estimator by estimation errors is less than 0.4 dB for the SNR values between 0 and 20 dB. This might indicate that the proposed estimator is suitable for the timing synchronization of multiple users in OFDMA uplink systems.

This paper presents a frequency offset estimation scheme which can be used for packet based OFDM communication systems. The proposed scheme detects the failure of performing coarse frequency offset estimation and compensates the error of estimated coarse frequency offset. The preamble structure considered in this paper is based on the preamble specified in IEEE802.11a and IEEE802.11p standards. We performed simulation to compare the performance according to the different number of reference packets used to detect the failure of performing coarse frequency offset estimation. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme has better performance than the conventional scheme in the low SNR(below 2dB) environment.

In this paper, we proposed an frequency offset estimation scheme which can be used for packet based OFDM communication systems such as IEEE802.11a and IEEE802.11p physical layer. Proposed estimation scheme can adjust the gain allocation ratio between long training symbol and short training symbol while maintaining average power of overall training sequence so that we can obtain the reference parameters for MSE performance improvement. The preamble structure considered in this paper is based on the preamble specified in IEEE802.11a and IEEE802.11p standardization group. From the simulation results, it is shown that power ratio between long training symbol and short training symbol must vanes for achieving lower frequency offset estimation error as channel SNR condition is changed. Also it is known oat proposed scheme can achieve better performance than conventional one.
In this paper, a new time delay estimation algorithm, WTD-LMSTDE was proposed. This method has great improvement in convergence rate relative to the time domain approach by decreasing the eigen value spread of input signal autocorrelation matrix. The performance of the algorithm was evaluated for the cases of time invariant time delay and time varying time delay. In the case of time invariant time delay, the estimation accuracy of WTD-LMSTDE was better than that of LMSTDE from 3.3% to 12.5% with respect to SNR. In the case of time varying time delay, the mean error power of WTD-LMSTDE in linear increased delay environment was decreased about 2.4dB compared to that of LMSTDE under noise-free condition. As a result, we showed that the performance of WTD-LMSTDE is better than of LMSTDE.
In this paper, we derive the outage probability for M-ary phase shifting keying (MPSK) and M-ary quadrature amplitude modulation (MQAM) burst transmission (BT) of adaptive decode-and-forward (ADF) cooperative relay systems over quasi-static Rayleigh fading channels. Within a burst, there are pilot symbols and data symbols. Pilot symbols are used for channel estimation schemes and each relay node's transmission mode selection schemes. At first, we focus on ADF relay systems in which the probability density function (PDF) is derived on the basis of error events at relay nodes corresponding to channel estimation errors. Next, the average outage probability is derived as an approximate expression for an arbitrary link signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) for different modulation orders. Its accuracy is demonstrated by comparison with simulation results. Further, it is confirmed that BT-ADF relay systems with pilot symbol based channel estimation schemes enables to select correctly decoded relay nodes without additional signaling between relay nodes and the destination node, and it is verified that the ideal performance is achieved with small SNR loss.
Direct-conversion receivers often suffer from a DC-offset that is a by-product of the direct conversion process to baseband. In general, a basic approach to reduce the DC-offset is to do simple average of the baseband signal and remove the DC by subtracting the average. However, this gives rise to a residual DC offset which degrades the performance when the receiver adopts the coding schemes with high coding rates such as 8-PSK. Therefore, more advanced methods should be additionally required for better performance. While the training sequences are basically designed to have good auto-correlation properties to facilitate the channel estimation, they may be not good for the simultaneous estimation of the channel response and the DC-offset. Also the DC offset compensation under a bad condition does not give good results due to the estimation error. Correspondingly, the proposed scheme employs the two important points. First, the training sequence codes are divided into two groups by MSE(Mean Squared Errors) for estimating the channel taps and then SNR calculated from each group is compared to predefined threshold to do fine DC-offset estimation. Next, ON/OFF module is applied for preventing performance degradation by large estimation error under severe channel conditions. The simulation results of the proposed scheme shows good performances compared to the existing algorithm. As a result, this scheme is surely applicable to the receiver design in many communications systems.
In this paper, Active Noise Control(ANC) algorithm is proposed based on the estimated frequency estimator of the reference signal. The conventional feedforward ANC algorithms should measure the reference and use it to calculate the gradient of the squared error and filter coefficients. For ANC systems applied to aircrafts and passenger ships, engines from which reference signal is usually measured is so far from seats where main part of controller is placed that the scheme might be difficult to implement or very costly. Feedback ANC algorithm which doesn't need to measure the reference uses the error signal to update the filter and is sensitive to unexpected transient noise like a sneeze, clapping of hands and so on The proposed algorithm estimates frequencies of the desired signal in real time using adaptive notch filter. New frequency estimation algorithm is proposed with the improved convergence rate, threshold SNR and computational simplicity. Reference is not measured but created with the estimated frequencies. It has strong similarity to the conventional feedback control because reference is made from error signal. Enhanced error signal is used to update the controller for better performance under the measurement noise and impact noise. The proposed ANC algorithm is compared with the conventional feedback control.

Many CDMA systems provide pilot channels in order to help channel estimation process. Especially in wideband CDMA systems, the number of receive diversity paths can be large due to small chip duration and high multi-path resolution capability. Hence, the received signal power of each path is small for a given total SNR (signal-to-noise ratio) and the pilot power of each path may not be sufficiently large for accurate channel estimation. When the pilot power is small, one can use decision-directed channel estimation to utilize more energy of the received data. However, the decision errors can deteriorate the quality of decision-directed channel estimation. This paper proposes a novel channel estimation method that optimally utilizes receiver decisions as well as pilot symbols with the help of estimated SER (symbol error rate) and SNR. The proposed method computes two channel estimates using the pilot and the data channel filters and optimally combines them. The simulation results show that the proposed method is robust and outperforms the conventional pilot-symbol-aided channel estimation method.

In this paper, we compare a bit error rate performance with channel estimation for terrestrial cloud transmission systems in order to provide an advanced research. Since terrestrial cloud transmission systems experience co-channel interference from one or more transmitters, they have to operate under negative signal-to-noise ratio.
