The Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language (SMIL) is a declarative markup language based on the eXtensible Markup Language (XML) to define a set of markup tags for synchronizing the timing and positioning relationships between multimedia objects. SMIL makes authoring of TV-like multimedia presentations on the Web easier for applications such as electronic commerce. We present the design and implementation of a JAVA-based SMIL player, which processes different types of media objects using multiple threads. Moreover, its cache engine detects the media type and allocates the proper cache memory for the corresponding media object.

인터넷의 비약적인 발달로 인해 복잡해진 지식체계에 따른 다양해진 정보를 손쉽게 구할수 있게 되었으나, HTML(Hyper Text Markup Language)과 같은 정적인 텍스트 위주의 고정된 내용의 웹 페이지 저작으로는 멀티미디어에 대한 점차 증대되는 사용자의 요구를 수용할 수 없게 되었다. 시간에 기반을 둔 멀티미디어 객체를 동기화 하는 효과적인 프레젠테이션을 기술할 수 있는 SMIL(Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language)이 W3C(World Wide Web Consortium)에 의해 제안되었다. 이러한 SWIL은 선언적 마크업(Markup) 언어이므로 텍스트 편집기 등으로 쉽게 저작할 수 있으나, 태그(Tag)기반 언어이므로 태그를 암기하고 사용법을 숙지하여야만 효과적인 멀티미디어 프레젠테이션 제작이 가능하다. 이러한 문제점을 해결하기 위해 본 논문에서는 Java를 기반으로 하여 사용자 편의적인 GUI(Graphical User Interface)에 입각한 멀티미디어 데이터의 통합 및 동기화를 위한 SMIL 전용 저작도구의 구현 및 향후 개발 방향을 제시하였다.

인터넷과 통합된 멀티미디어 기술의 발전 및 초고속 통신망의 보편적인 사용으로 인해 유기적으로 통합된 멀티미디어 컨텐츠에 대한 웹 서비스의 필요성이 대두되었다. 이에 따라 1998년 W3C(World Wide Web Consortium)에서 제안된 XML(eXtensible markup Language) 기반의 통합 멀티미디어 표현 언어인 SMIL(Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language) 1.0이 발표되었고, 기능이 확장되어 2000년 9월 SMIL 2.0으로 최종 Working Draft안이 발표되었다. 본 논문에서는 웹 컨텐츠 제공자 및 개인 사용자에게 SMIL 컨텐츠 저작을 위한 자동 생성 모듈 및 전용 저작 도구를 제공하고, SMIL 컨텐츠 데이터베이스 서버 및 재생기와의 통합으로 원활한 SMIL 컨텐츠 서비스 환경을 제공하는 통합 멀티미디어 시스템의 설계 및 구현을 제시하였다.

SMIL is a declarative markup language based on XML, which enables users to make effective multimedia presentations on the web by synchronizing media objects. In this paper, we design and implement a SMIL authoring tool which support Intuitive creation of web multimedia documents and diverse practical use of created information. Besides, creation, management and authoring module of SMIL document, it offers template interface depending on network bandwidth selection for general users to create multimedia presentation a convenient way. In addition, we implement SMIL document management facility for a large number of users, by connecting SMIL contents database sever.

In this paper, I propose modeling rules, formal models, modeling function and an algorithm for SMIL documents using use case diagram and sequence diagram of UML(Unified Modeling Language)to Develop for SMIL Documents Editor. It will be used the use case diagram and collaboration diagram for object-oriented visualizing tool to describe the temporal behavior of the presentation. The main contribution of this paper is that developers of SMIL documents editor easily generate them using this rules and algorithm. And, the formal models and modeling functions provide an environment for processing object-oriented. documents.

In this paper, we suggest a method for dynamic generation of SMIL documents by user profiles on the web. Generated multimedia documents are based on the SMIL (Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language) that are recommended by the W3C. The method generates automatically XSLT documents according to user profiles. SMIL documents are produced on real-time by integration of the XSLT documents and the XML documents that are made already. Most of conventional web-based documents are based on the HTML that is difficult to support reusability of documents are relation among multimedia abject. However, the suggested method is based on the XML, and so it supports reusability of documents and produces efficiently various SMIL-based multimedia documents. Application for the suggested method are as follows; Electronic commerce, tele-lecture, a web-based document editing, etc.

The SMIL(Synchronized Multimedia Integration Language) documents are represented as logical structure information, spatial layout structure information, temporal synchronization structure information and hyperlink structure information, according as the structural characteristics of SMIL documents based on XML. This paper proposes the effective modeling and query method for the multi -structure information of inherent SMIL documents. In particular, we present the object-oriented modeling by using UML class diagram in order to represent the objects classes for the structured information of SMIL documents, and the hierarchical structure and the relationships for the objects classes. In addition, the objects classes definition is specified in compliance with SQL3 for database standard language. We also propose the access method and the query representation for hierarchical structure in order to retrieve efficiently the structural objects of SMIL documents.
