  • The thermal properties of poly (ethylene terephthalate) (PET) modified by 5-sulfoisophthalic acid sodium salt(SIAS) were studied. The glass transition temperature was increased, and the melting temperature and the crystallization rate were decreased as the content of SIAS unit was increased. The decrease of crystallization rate is thought to be due to the polar, bulky sulfonic acid sodium salt group which greatly retards the crystallization on to the growing crystal surface of the diffused polymer chain. The crystallization mechanism of copolyester is dependent on the content of SIAS unit and the three dimensional growth of crystal is hindered by the added SIAS unit.

  • The objective of the present study lies in constructing web-based GIS system providing broad range of information applicable for power/telecommunications distribution facilities through cable. Nowadays, Korea is renowned forits faste sttele communications network across the nation enjoyable for being a test-runbed by worldwide contents providers. It is not too much to say that the trend is caused by the fact that Korea utilizes the cobweb-like power transmission cables applicable for the nationwide telecommunications networking. In particular, the trend has been all the more encouraged by the governmental drive to expedite the telecommunication network by way of the established power transmission facilities deemed as publicutility. Nevertheless, few can deny that the overexcessive competition among telecommunication service providers increasingly gives rise to unauthorized, arbitrary facilitation of distribution devices, which becomes much burden in operating the normal power/telecommunications distribution facilities by a power-generating company. In this regard, the study, to cope with such problems, attempts to develop a web GIS-based information management system compatible with NDIS(New Distribution Information System), a distribution facility management system now under operation by KEPCO, making advantage of GE Energy's SIAS(Smallworld Internet Application) technology. The model provided by this study is expected to get closer into effective operation of distribution facilities along with better sharing of information among conventional telecommunications operators, while getting rid of infringed facilitation cases

  • Insulin resistance is a risk factor for stroke or recurrent stroke. Sedentary behavior increases insulin resistance. This study aimed to identify the relationship between physical impairments and functions and insulin resistance, examining which physical impairments specifically influence insulin resistance the most. The subjects of this study were 63 stroke patients. The subject's insulin resistance and physical impairments and functions were measured using the Chedoke-McMaster Stroke Assessment (CMSA) and Stroke Impairment Assessment Set (SIAS). The study results exhibited that insulin resistance is statistically significantly related to the variable of foot according to the CMSA(r=.95, p<.05) and to the variable of lower extremity sensory function (touch) in relation to the SIAS(r=.91, p<.05). This study also revealed close correlations between insulin resistance and the variables of ankle control(${\beta}=-1.05$, p<.05) and low extremity tactile sensations(${\beta}=-1.82$, p<.05).

  • Background: Breast cancer is one of the most common cancer types in women and is amongst the most devastating and stressful events in the life of women. The external appearance of breast cancer patients usually changes due to the surgical and/or medical therapies used. An association may be found between social support perception and social appearance anxiety in patients with breast cancer in the period after mastectomy. Therefore, this study investigated the social appearance anxiety and social support status in women with breast cancer in our country. Materials and Methods: A descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted in breast cancer patients undergoing treatment or follow-up in Medical Oncology and General Surgery departments. Results: The mean age of the participants was $51.13{\pm}8.48$ years (range, 24-74 years) with nearly half of the patients (40.6%) aged 40-50 years. Of the patients, 39.1% had stage 3 breast cancer. The mean score on Cancer Patient's Social Support Scale (CPSSS) was $134.85{\pm}9.35$, and there was a significant difference in CPSSS total scores betweena the age groups, educational levels, self-reported income levels and stage of disease (p<0.05). The mean Social Image Anxiety Scale (SIAS) score was found to be $34.30{\pm}9.35$ (min:16, max:66) in women participating in this study. The CPSSS and SIAS scores of the participants were inversely correlated, and the SIAS score was found to decrease with the increasing CPSSS score but with no statistically significant difference (r=-0.110, p=0.217). Conclusions: Social appearance anxiety is higher in the patients with poor social support.

  • Objective : Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by fear of social threat and exhibits limbic hyper-reactivity toward social stimuli such as emotional faces. A previous study identified the uncinate fasciculus (UF) sub-tract as particularly related to facial memory. To explore the white matter tract relating to face-specific brain regions, we investigated the UF sub-tract in SAD. Methods : The diffusion tensor images of 22 patients with SAD and 20 healthy controls were analyzed with tractography. The UF sub-tract was delineated using the regions of interest of face patches in the anterior temporal lobe and the orbitofrontal cortex, and fractional anisotrophy (FA) and total number of streamlines (ST) were analyzed. We examined the group comparison of FA and ST of the UF sub-tract and correlations of FA and ST with the social anxiety symptoms such as the Liebowitz Social Anxiety Scale (LSAS), the Social Interaction Anxiety Scale (SIAS), the Social Phobia Scale (SPS) and the Fear of Negative Evaluation scale (FNE) in SAD. Results : There were no group differences in FA and ST of the UF sub-tract. However, negative correlations were observed between ST of the right UF sub-tract and severity of social anxiety symptoms (LSAS, rs=-0.480, p=0.024; SIAS, rs=-0.580, p=0.005; SPS, rs=-0.590, p=0.004; FNE, rs=-0.675, p=0.001) in patients with SAD. Conclusion : Although patients with SAD did not show quantitative abnormalities in the UF sub-tact connecting face-specific brain regions, this structure seems to play a role in the symptom severity of SAD.

  • The aim of this experiments were to assess the time-interval change of motional characteristics in frozen-thawed semen of Korean native cattle (KNC) by using computer aided semen analysis (CASA) technology. Twenty-six KNC frozen semen straws were obtained from Korean KNC improvement department, livestock improvement main division, national livestock cooperatives federation in Korea. Specimens were allowed to thaw at $37^{\circ}C$ for 30 sec in water bath. Semen analysis was performed on semen image analysis system (SIAS, Medical supply, Korea) adjusted to the gate settings and used the semen droplet ($5{\mu}l$) placed on Makler counting chamber (Sefi medical instrument, Israel) prewarmed at $37^{\circ}C$. The same person used the same micropipette to fill the Makler counting chamber. A total of 150 or more of sperms were analysed in each specimen by a single trained person by scanning at least 5 to 10 fields. The measurement parameters in SIAS were as follows ; frame rate = 30 frames per sec, image capture = 1 sec, minimum motile speed = $10{\mu}m/s$, maximum countable sperm number = 400. Statistical analysis was done by Student t-test with use of the Sigma plot program on a IBM personal computer. The dancemean(DNM) and hyperactivated sperm(HYP) of frozen-thawed KNC semen kinematics were significantly decreased(p < 0.05) after 10 min of incubation at $37^{\circ}C$ water bath. But, wobble(WOB) of same sample semen was significantly increased(p < 0.05) after 10 min of incubation and significantly decrease(p < 0.05) after 60 min of same incubation. And, after 30 mim of incubation, significantly differences were found most of motion kinematics, motifity(MOT), curvilinear velocity(VCL), straight line velocity(VSL), average path velocity(VAP), amplitude of lateral head displacement(ALH), beat cross frequency(BCF), mean angular displacement(MAD), dance(DNC), on same sample semen. The DNM of KNC semen sample was variable kinematics after 30 min of incubation. Also, the linearity(LIN) and straightness(STR) was significantly decreased(p < 0.05) from 60 min of incubation. In conclusion, the AI within 30 min after thawing of frozen semen can be an effective method for obtaining high fertility rate in KNC reproductive program.

  • This experiment was conducted to predict the effects of motional characteristics on the fertility of Korean native cattle(KNC) by using CASA technology and in vitro fertilization system. Twenty-six KNC frozen semen straws were obtained from Korean KNC improvement department, livestock improvement main division, national livestock cooperatives federation in Korea. Specimens were allowed to thaw at $37^{\circ}C$ for 30 sec in water bath. Semen analysis was performed on semen image analysis system(SIAS, Medical supply, Korea) adjusted to the gate settings and used the semen droplet ($5{\mu}l$) placed on Makler counting chamber(Sefi medical instrument, Israel) prewarmed at $37^{\circ}C$. The same person used the same micropipette to fill the Makler counting chamber. A total of 150 or more of sperms were analysed in each specimen by a single trained person by scanning at least 5 to 10 fields. The oocytes collection, in vitro maturation, IVF, in vitro culture and determination of the cleavage rate were performed by the technique, as described by Hwang et al (1997). Statistical analysis was done by linear regression with use of the Sigma plot program on a IBM personal computer. The cleavage rate in vitro fertilized oocyte was significantly correlated(P<0.05) with MOT, VCL, VSL, VAP, ALH, BCF and MAD, but not CON, LIN, STR, WOB, DNM, DNC and HYP in regressional analysis. The results show that some kinematic characteristics of frozen-thawed semen by CASA can be predict the fertility in in vitro model system.

  • KEPCO(Korean Electric Power Corporation) is now operating an incorporated system for designing and maintenance of electric power facilities called NDIS (New Distribution Information System). Given the structure of the nation which exclusively permits establishment of new electric facilities and maintenance, expertise (skilled knowledge) about the related system on the part of electric engineers is very important. But in the view of education and training, it is a reality that current offline ways of education based on application for educational courses at the KEPCO Academy, an education organization under KEPCO, are unsatisfactory in efficiency and availability to related engineers. Therefore, We realize that a simulation design education system which guarantees an easy access is required to make the best of the existing system NDIS. For this purpose the present work is a study on the development of a simulation education system to make local based NDIS real on the web, which enables related engineers to practice designing and get feedback of the result.
