Initial flame development and propagation were visualized under different fuel injection timings to relate the initial flame development to the engine stability in a port injection SI engine. Experiments were performed in an optical single cylinder engine modified from a production engine and images were captured through the quartz window mounted in the piston by an intensified CCD camera. Stratification state was controlled by varying injection timing. Under each injection condition, the flame images were captured at the pre-set crank angles. These were averaged and processed to characterize the flame. The flame stability was estimated by the weighted average of flame area, luminosity, and standard deviation of flame area. Results show that stratification state according to injection timing did not affect on the direction of flame propagation. The flame development and the initial flame stability are strongly dependent on the stratified conditions and the initial flame stability governs the engine stability and lean misfire limit.

In this study, a spark ignition engine operated with LPG and DME blended fuel was studied experimentally. Performance and emissions characteristics of a LPG engine fuelled by LPG and DME blended fuel were examined. Results showed that stable engine operation was possible for a wide range of engine loads within 20% mass content of DME fuel. Also, engine output power within 10% mass content of DME fuel was comparable to pure LPG fuel operation. Exhaust emissions measurements showed that hydrocarbon and NOx were increased with the blended fuel at low engine speed. Engine output power was decreased and break specific fuel consumption (BSFC) was severely increased with the blended fuel since the energy content of DME was much lower than that of LPG. Considering the results of engine output power and exhaust emissions, the blended fuel within 20% mass content of DME could be used as an alternative fuel for LPG.

Mankind is enjoying a great convenience of their life by the rapid growth of secondary industry since the Industrial Revolution and it is possible due to the invention of huge power such as engine. The automobile which plays the important role of industrial development and human movement is powered by the Engine Module, and especially Diesel engine is widely used because of mechanical durability and energy efficiency. The main work mechanism of the Diesel engine is composed of inhalation of the organic material (coal, oil, etc.), combustion, explosion and exhaust Cycle process then the carbon compound emissions during the last exhaust process are essential which is known as the major causes of air pollution issues in recent years. In particular, COx, called carbon oxide compound which is composed of a very small size of the particles from several ten to hundred nano meter and they exist as a suspension in the atmosphere. These Diesel particles can be accumulated at the respiratory organs and cause many serious diseases. In order to compensate for the weak point of such a Diesel Engine, the DPF(Diesel Particulate Filter) post-cleaning equipment has been used and it mainly consists of ceramic materials(SiC, Cordierite etc) because of the necessity for the engine system durability on the exposure of high temperature, high pressure and chemical harsh environmental. Ceramic Material filter, but it remains a lot of problems yet, such as limitations of collecting very small particles below micro size, high cost due to difficulties of manufacturing process and low fuel consumption efficiency due to back pressure increase by the small pore structure. This study is to test the possibility of new structure by direct infiltration of SiC Whisker on Carbon felt as the next generation filter and this new filter is expected to improve the above various problems of the Ceramic DPF currently in use and reduction of the cost simultaneously. In this experiment, non-catalytic VS CVD (Vapor-Solid Chemical Vaporized Deposition) system was adopted to keep high mechanical properties of SiC and MTS (Methyl-Trichloro-Silane) gas used as source and H2 gas used as dilute gas. From this, the suitable whisker growth for high performance filter was observed depending on each deposition conditions change (input gas ratio, temperature, mass flow rate etc.).

Fuel reforming technology for the fuel cell vehicles has been frequently applied to internal combustion engine for the reduction of engine out emissions. Since syngas which is reformed from fossil fuel has hydrogen as a major component, it has abilities to enhance the combustion characteristics with wide flammability and high speed flame propagation. In this paper, syngas was feed to a 2.0 liter SI engine with MPI to improve exhaust emissions under cold start and early state of idle condition. Syngas fraction is varied to 0%, 10%, 25%, with various ignition timings. Exhaust emission characteristics and the exhaust system temperature were measured to investigate the effects of syngas addition on cold start. Result showed that HC emission could be dramatically reduced due to the fact that syngas has $H_2$ and no HC as components. The amount of $NO_x$ emission was decreased with the increase of syngas fraction. Because the dilution effect of $N_2$ and the retard of ignition timing reduces the peak combustion temperature inside the cylinder. Exhaust gas temperature was lower than that of gasoline feeding condition. Retarded ignition timing, however, resulted in increased exhaust gas temperature approximated to gasoline condition. It is supposed that the usage of syngas in an SI engine is an effective solution to meet the future strict emission regulations.

During the SI engine starting up, starting conditions directly contribute to the unburned hydrocarbon emissions in spark ignition engines. The effects of catalyst temperatures and fuel injection skip methods on HC emissions were investigated. The test was conducted on a 1.5 L, 4-cylinder, 16 valve, multipoint-port-fuel-injection gasoline engine. To understand the formation of HC emissions, HC concentration was measured in an exhaust port using a Fast Response Flame ionization Detector (FRFID). The result showed that HC emissions, which were emitted at the cold coolant and catalyst temperature, were generated much higher than those of hot coolant and catalyst temperatures. In additions, fuel injection skips reduced highly HC emissions. It is convinced that optimized fuel injection skip method according to coolant and catalyst temperatures could be applied to reduce HC emissions during the SI engine starts.

Not only cold start HC emission but also $NO_x$ emission could be dramatically reduced due to the fact that syngas has no HC and has nitrogen up to 50% as components. Exhaust gas temperature was lower than that of gasoline feeding condition. Delayed ignition timing, however, resulted in increased exhaust gas temperature approximated to gasoline condition. Even in non-road UTV (Utility Terrain Vehicle), spark ignition engines are often used to reduce emissions. In this study, gasoline and LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas) fuels were applied to UTV engines, and the exhaust gas and combustion stability were compared through engine tests. A 0.8-liter two-cylinder SI engine was used in the experiment. Experiments were conducted while changing the IVO (Intake Valve Open) and EVC (Exhaust Valve Close) at 1500 rpm 14 N·m, 40 N·m, and 3000 rpm 17 N·m, 44 N·m conditions. As a result of the experiment, when the valve overlap increased according to the change of IVO and EVC, combustion stability decreased and THC emission increased, but NOx decreased. Comparing the LPG engine with the gasoline engine, the amount of CO2 and PN (Particulate Number) generation decreased in the LPG engine, and the combustion stability was good.
A performance analysis of a gasoline engine with a 2-stage turbocharger system for unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV) was conducted. One dimensional system analysis was conducted for the requirements of turbochargers and adequate turbochargers were selected from commercially available models for automobiles. Modeling and simulation were performed by Ricardo WAVE. Gasoline engine modeling was based on a 2.4 L 4-cylinder engine specification. The selected turbochargers and intercoolers were added to the engine model and simulated at 40,000 ft altitude condition. The results of the engine model and 2-stage turbocharger system model simulation showed break power 93 kW which is appropriate power required for the engine operation at the ambient conditions of 40,000 ft altitude.

Combustion and flame propagation characteristics of the liquid phase LPG injection (LPLI) engine were investigated in a single cylinder optical engine. Lean bum operation is needed to reduce thermal stress of exhaust manifold and engine knock in a heavy duty LPG engine. An LPLI system has advantages on lean operation. Optimized engine design parameters such as swirl, injection timing and piston geometry can improve lean bum performance with LPLI system. In this study, the effects of piston geometry along with injection timing and swirl ratio on flame propagation characteristics were investigated. A series of bottom-view flame images were taken from direct visualization using an W intensified high-speed CCD camera. Concepts of flame area speed, In addition to flame propagation patterns and thermodynamic heat release analysis, was introduced to analyze the flame propagation characteristics. The results show the correlation between the flame propagation characteristics, which is related to engine performance of lean region, and engine design parameters such as swirl ratio, piston geometry and injection timing. Stronger swirl resulted in foster flame propagation under open valve injection. The flame speed was significantly affected by injection timing under open valve injection conditions; supposedly due to the charge stratification. Piston geometry affected flame propagation through squish effects.
