Silicon carbide with aluminium oxide was used to remove the sulphur hexafluoride ($SF_6$) gas using microwave irradiation. The destruction and removal efficiencies (DREs) of $SF_6$ were studies as a function of various decomposition temperatures and microwave powers. The decomposition of $SF_6$ gas was analyzed using GC-TCD. XRD (X-ray powder diffraction) and XRF (X-ray Fluorescence Spectrometer) were used to characterize the properties of aluminum oxide. DREs of $SF_6$ were increased as the microwave powers were increased. Additive aluminium oxide on SiC increased the removal efficiencies and decreased the decomposition temperature. The XRD results show that the ${\gamma}-Al_2O_3$ was transformed to ${\alpha}-Al_2O_3$ during $SF_6$ decomposition by microwave irradiation. It was found that the best material to control $SF_6$ was SiC with $Al_2O_3$ 30 wt% in consideration of microwave energy consumption and $SF_6$ decomposition rate.
Environmental impact of human activities has become a great concern in most of the countries world-wide, and for years. It has recently focused on potential climate changes due to the increase of green house gases content in the atmosphere. One of these gases is $SF_6$, which is an essential material in electrical applications having excellent dielectric and arc-quenching properties. Though the actual contribution of $SF_6$ to global warming is negligible at present, the control of $SF_6$ emissions seems to be nevertheless imperative. Actually, it is listed in the Kyoto protocol that emissions should not only be duly reported but also the electrical industry which is now the major user of this gas must be able to show that it is possible to use this gas and at the same time preserve the environment. For the development of environmentally-benign electric power equipment and systems, novel gases or gas mixtures are strongly required as the alternatives of $SF_6$ gas. Until now, most research work is focused on the $SF_6/N_2$ mixed gas which is suitable for application in the electrical apparatus with slightly non-uniform fields. Recently, $SF_6/CO_2$ mixed gas also is expected to be promising as a $SF_6$ alternative, especially in highly non-uniform fields and in a gas-impregnated film insulation system. Including these results, the author reviews the research trend or reducing the environmental impact of $SF_6$ gas in this paper.
Mean energy of electrons in $SF_6-Ar$ Mixtures Gas used by MCS-BEq algorithm has been analysed over the E/N range $30{\sim}300[Td]$ by a two term Boltzmann equation and by a Monte Carlo Simulation using a set of electron cross sections determined by other authors, experimentally the electron swarm parameters for 0.2[%] and 0.5[%] $SF_6-Ar$, 0.1[%] and 5.0[%], $SF_6-Ar$ mixtures were measured by time-of-flight(TOF) method. The transport Coefficients for electrons in (100[%])$SF_6$. (100[%])Ar, (0.2[%])$SF_6-Ar$ and (0.5[%]) $SF_6-Ar$, (5.0[%]) $SF_6-Ar$, (0.1[%])$SF_6-Ar$ mixtures were measured by time-of-flight method, and the electron energy distribution function and the parameters of the velocity and the diffusion were determined by the variation of the collision cross-sections with energy. The results obtained from Boltzmann equation method and Monte Carlo simulation have been compared with present and previously obtained data and respective set of electron collision cross sections of the molecules.
It is very desirable that a mixture gas possessing excellent insulation performance is suggested for insulation on increasing high voltage. This paper proposes a $SF_6$ mixture gas based on the factors including dielectric strength, environmental impact and economic feasibility of manufacture for the insulation in eco-friendly power equipment. A suitable-$SF_6$ content was determined to improve the dielectric strength in $N_2$ and Dry Air. The examination results of the factors revealed that a $SF_6$/Dry Air mixture gas possessing the $SF_6$ content was more appropriate than a $SF_6/N_2$ mixture gas to the eco-friendly power equipment. In addition to the selection of the suitable $SF_6$ mixture gas, insulation characteristics as a function of $SF_6$ content were described from electron-detachment mechanism.
Etch characteristics of SF6/CI2 electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) plasmas have been investigated. Surface reaction of gas plasma with polysilicon was also analysed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). At the same time, the relationship between surface reaction and the etched profile of polysilicon was examined using XPS. The etch rate of polysilicon and oxide increases with increasing flow rate of SF6 in the SF6/CI2 gas mixture, and tis selectivity also increase also increase. It was also found that as increasing flow rate of SF6 in the SF6/CI2 gas mixture, the atomic% of chlorine detected at surface region decrease, but F and S contents increase. At the same time, when the mixing ratio of SF6 gas increases, the anisotropy of etched polysilicon is sharply decreased in the 0%~10% range of the SF6 mixing ratio, but is rarely varied in the range over 10%, in spite of the large variations in flow rates. It can be explained that the bonding of S-Si due to SiSx(x$\leq$2) compound formed on the etched surface suppress the formation of Si-Cl and 'or Si-F bonding in the silicon etching.
New gas mixtures are now finding applications such as interrupting media for high-voltage circuit breakers. These mixtures consist of a high content of carbon tetrafluoride($CF_4$) added to sulfur hexafluoride($SF_6$). Nowdays $SF_6$ has been established for the use in gas insulated substations due to its high insulation withstand level and good arc quenching capability. At this paper Breakdown characteristics were investigated for $SF_6/CF_4$ mixtures when AC voltage and standard lightning impulse voltage(LI) was applied in a needle-plane electrodes. And partial discharge(PD) experiments were carried out in the test chamber which was made in needle-plane electrode. And ${\Phi}$-Q-N distribution of partial discharge signals was analyzed. The total pressure of the $SF_6/CF_4$ mixtures was varied within the range of 0.1-0.5 Mpa in the test chamber. The breakdown voltage in needle-plane electrode displayed N shape characteristics for increasing the content of $SF_6$ at positive impulse voltage and the PD inception voltage was increased slightly when pressure of $SF_6/CF_4$ Mixtures was increased. Maximum PD inception voltage is showed in 80% SF6/20%$CF_4$.
Because sulfur hexafluoride(SF6) is classified as one of the six major greenhouse gases, SF6 handling in power plant such as recovery, purification, and reuse is considered to be important. KEPCO has focused to develop the advanced recovery and purification technology of SF6 reuse. SF6 analysis includes the on-site analyses and on-line analyzer; i.e., (1) on-site analysis has an error rate of ±0.5% and (2) on-line analysis has an error rate of ±0.1%, which is possible to adjust operating conditions and to make the work more conveniently by analyzing SF6 concentration before and after purification step. This paper presents an online analysis method in the SF6 purification and reuse system. In addition, the analysis results and quality guarantees for each section of the analysis system were presented.
[ $SF_6$ ] gas circuit breakers are widely used for short circuit current interruption in EHV(Extra High Voltage) or UHV(Ultra High Voltage) power systems. To develop $SF_6$ gas circuit breakers, the arc resistance value is necessary to compare experimental results to numerical ones. The arc resistance value can be obtained from a breaking test with a $SF_6$ gas circuit breaker. The direct testing or synthetic testing facility is widely used to verify the breaking ability for $SF_6$ gas circuit breakers. We employed the simplified synthetic testing facility to test a $SF_6$ gas circuit breaker prototype. The arc resistance characteristic was measured and calculated under the various experimental conditions. This arc resistance value can be used for verifying the numerical results from arc simulation in a circuit breakers.
In this paper the experiments of insulation characteristics by temperature change of $SF_6$ gas and insulation characteristics about liquid $SF_6$ in GIS(Gas Insulated Switchgear) were described. From this result, at low temperature, the breakdown voltage was increased with a drop of temperature and an increase of the inner pressure in GIS. The ability of insulation in liquid $SF_6$ was higher than that of the highly pressurized $SF_6$ gas. A liquid $SF_6$ discharge characteristics was caused by bubble formed evaporation of liquid $SF_6$ and bubble when high voltage apply to electrode. Corona was happened to weak bubble and was proceed to new bubble breakdown.
