  • Semiconductor nanowires (NWs) have attracted research interests due to the distinct physical properties that can lead to variousoptical and electrical applications. In this paper, we have grown InAs NWs viagold (Au)-assisted vapor-liquid-solid (VLS) and catalyst-free vapor-solid (VS) mechanisms and investigated on the p-type doping profile of the NWs. Metal-organic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) is used for the growth of the NWs. Trimethylindium (TMIn) and arsine (AsH3) were used for the precursor and diethyl zinc (DEZn) was used for the p-type doping source of the NWs. The effectiveness of p-type doping was confirmed by electrical measurement, showing an increase of the electron density with the DEZn flow. The structural properties of the InAs NWs were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In addition, we characterize atomic distribution of InAs NWs using energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis.

  • Corrosion characteristics of Ti, Ti/Cr coated and plasma-nitrided surface for stainless steel containing Ti have been studied. Stainless steels containing 0.09-0.92wt% Ti were fabricated by using vacuum furnace and solutionized for 1hr at 105$0^{\circ}C$. Ti and Cr coatings were done on solutionized stainless steel surface by EB-PVD. The Ti coated specimen were coated by Cr and were nitrided by plasma at $450^{\circ}C$ for 5hr. Microstructure and phase analysis were performed using SEM, OM and EDX. Corrosion behavior of the coated specimen was investigated by electrochemical test. The coated surface was of fine columnar structure. The Ti/Cr coated surface was denser than the Ti coated and the Ti coated-nitrided surfaces. The corrosion and pitting potential increased in proportion to the Ti content, coating temperature, coating thickness and formation of stable oxide film. The current density in active and passive region decreased in the case of Ti/Cr coated sample and Ti coated-nitrided samples. Especially the plasma nitrided specimen after Ti coating have a good corrosion resistance compared with the Ti coated specimen. The number and size of pits decreased as Ti content of matrix increased.

  • Sn-based lithium-ion batteries have low cost and high theoretical specific capacity. However, one of major problem is the capacity fading caused by volume expansion during lithiation/delithiation. In this study, 3-dimensional foam structure of Cu-Sn alloy is prepared by co-electrodeposition including large free space to accommodate the volume expansion of Sn. The Cu-Sn foam structure exhibits highly porous and numerous small grains. The result of EDX mapping and XPS spectrum analysis confirm that Cu-Sn foam consists of $SnO_2$ with a small quantity of CuO. The Cu-Sn foam structure electrode shows high reversible redox peaks in cyclic voltammograms. The galvanostatic cell cycling performances show that Cu-Sn foam electrode has high specific capacity of 687 mAh/g at a current rate of 50 mA/g. Through SEM observation after the charge/discharge processes, the morphology of Cu-Sn foam structure is mostly maintained despite large volume expansion during the repeated lithiation/delithiation reactions.

  • This study aims at investigating the effect of heat treatment conditions on the dry sliding wear behavior of thermally sprayed Ni-based self-flux alloy coatings. Ni-based self-flux alloy powders were sprayed onto a carbon steel substrate and then heat-treated at 700, 800, 900 and $1000^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes in a vacuum furnace. Dry sliding wear tests were performed using sliding speed of 0.4 m/s and applied load of 6 N. AISI 52100 ball(diameter 8 mm) was used as counterparts. Microstructure and wear behavior of both as-sprayed and heat-treated Ni-based self-flux alloy coatings were studied using a scanning electron microscope(SEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy(EDX), electron probe micro-analysis(EPMA) and X-ray diffraction(XRD). It was revealed that microstructure and wear behavior of thermally sprayed Ni-based self-flux alloy coatings were much influenced by heat treatment conditions.

  • The amounts of copper, mercury, silver, tin, and zinc released from conventional, dispersed phase and spherical high copper content amalgam immersed in artificial saliva soln. for periods of 2 hours, 1 day, 7 days, 30 days has been measured using Neutron Activation analysis and Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry. The second electron image and EDX of the surface of samples immersed in artificial saliva were observed using SEM. The following results were obtained. 1. The dispersed non-$\gamma_2$ amalgam released more Hg, Ag than the $\gamma_2$-amalgams. Later a decrease of the release rate could be observed. 2. The dispersed high copper amalgam released more copper than low-copper amalgam and the release rate was decreased with time. But the amounts of copper released from Tytin increased with time. 3. Zinc was released all the experiment time. 4. EDAX showed that surface was composed of Ca,P, Sn, Ag, Zn, and Cu, but C1 was not detected. 5. The discontinued destructed surface was observed from the polished amalgam surface. High copper amalgam was destructed more than low copper amalgam.

  • ZnO micro/nanocrystals at large scale were synthesized through the thermal evaporation of Al-Zn mixtures under air atmosphere. The effect of synthetic temperature and time on the morphology of the micro/nanocrystals was examined. It was found that the temperature and time affected the morphology of the ZnO crystals. At temperatures below $900^{\circ}C$, no crystals were synthesized. At a temperature of $1000^{\circ}C$, ZnO crystals with a rod shape were synthesized. With an increase in temperature from $1000^{\circ}C$ to $1100^{\circ}C$, the morphology of the crystals changed from rod shape to wire and granular shapes. As the time increased from 2 h to 3 h at $1000^{\circ}C$, tetrapod-shaped ZnO crystals started to form. XRD patterns showed that the ZnO crystals had a hexagonal wurtzite structure. EDX analysis revealed that the ZnO crystals had high purity. It is believed that the ZnO nanowires were grown via a vapor-solid mechanism because no catalyst particles were observed at the tips of the micro/nanocrystals in the SEM images.

  • This study evaluated the dewatering efficiency of inorganic dehydrating agents that contain oyster shells. A filter press dehydrator was used for this study. The experiments were performed by the single injection of calcium-based chemicals, the single injection of oyster shells, and the mixed injection of oyster shells and calcium-based chemicals. The moisture content of the dewatered cake generated after dehydration confirmed that the best dewatering efficiency was found at the mixing ratios of CaCO3 to sludge, oyster shell to sludge, and inorganic dehydrating agent to sludge of 3:1, 10:1, and 1.5:2.5:1, respectively. The moisture contents exhibited less than 58% when the injection mixing ratio of inorganic dehydrating agent to sludge was 1.5:2.5:1. From EPS, SEM, and EDX analysis, it was found that the calcium adsorbed on the sludge surface could reduce extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) and enhanced the dewaterbility. Based on the above results, it is considered possible to apply inorganic dehydrating agents containing recycled oyster shells in sludge dewatering in order to reduce sludge.

  • Three kinds of organometallic compounds (chromium acetylacetonate, magnesium acetate and vanadyl acetylacetonate) were used as transition metal precursor, titanium n-butoxide and multi-walled carbon nanotube as titanium and carbon precursor to prepare metal oxide-CNT/$TiO^2$ composites. The surface properties and morphology of metal oxide-CNT/$TiO^2$ composites were by Brauer-Emett-Teller (BET) surface area measurement, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis. The photocatalytic activity of prepared metal oxide-CNT/$TiO^2$ composites was determined by the degradation effect of methylene blue in an aqueous solution under irradiation of visible light.

  • Zn-AC and Zn-H-AC series prepared from non- and surface-modified activated carbon were investigated in terms of their hydrogen production capacity. An increase in the concentration of the zinc salts used with these series was shown to lead to a decrease in the values of the surface textural properties. The existence of zinc complexes on the surface was confirmed from an analysis of XRD data. The SEM micrographs of the two different sample types showed that the transformation of the carbon surface with an acid pre-treatment significantly change the metal contents on the surfaces of the carbon matrix. The EDX spectra indicated that all of the samples were richer in the amount of oxygen and zinc compared to any other elements. The results obtained using the Boehm's titration method showed that the positive introduction of the acidic groups on the carbon surfaces with the acid treatment is correlated with an increase in the amounts of zinc complexes with variation of the acidic groups. In terms of the hydrogen production performance, the volume fractions of the Zn-H-AC series were found to produce higher amounts than the Zn-AC series as a function of the metal contents considering the effects of the acid treatment.

  • In this study, ZnSe-$TiO_2$ composites were synthesized by a facile hydrothermal-assisted sol-gel process and characterized by nitrogen adsorption isotherms (77 K), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrophotometry. The photocatalytic activity was investigated by decoloration methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO), and rhodamine B (Rh.B) in an aqueous solution under visible light irradiation. The results revealed that the photocatalytic activity of the ZnSe-$TiO_2$ photocatalyst was much higher than that of pure$TiO_2$. The ZnSe nanoparticles, which act as a photosensitizer, not only extend the spectral response of $TiO_2$ to the visible region but also reduce charge recombinations.
