  • To develop an effective adsorbent for radio active Carbon Dioxide, $^14CO_2$, which is discharged to nearby atmosphere from nuclear power plants of CANDU type, we made some preliminary adsorbents and tested their abilities of $CO_2$ removal. The chemical agents used was LiOH and we supported or impregnated it on the surface or the internal volume of activated Carbon(GW-H). The physical and chemical properties of various adsorbents were measured using methods such as XRD, BET. SEM images were taken to investigate the change of surface morphology of the adsorbents. Finally, amount of $CO_2$ adsorption of them were verified under specific conditions. We found that mechanical mixing of LiOH and activated Carbon showed the maximum $CO_2$ removal ability, while surface activation of activated Carbon by Nitric Acid-treatment enhanced its $CO_2$ removal efficiency to some degree.

  • In this study, CNT/$TiO_2$ composites were prepared using surface modified Multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and titanium n-butoxide (TNB) with benzene. The composites were characterized by nitrogen adsorption isotherms, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX), FT-IR spectra, and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The UV radiation induced photoactivity of the CNT/$TiO_2$ composites was tested using a fixed concentration of methylene blue (MB, $C_{16}H_{18}N_3S{\cdot}Cl{\cdot}3H_2O$) in an aqueous solution. Finally, it can be considered that the MB removal effect of the CNT/$TiO_2$ composites is not only due to the adsorption effect of MWCNT and photocatalytic degradation of $TiO_2$, but also to electron transfer between MWCNT and $TiO_2$.

  • In this study, we prepared Fe-activated carbon fiber(ACF)/$TiO_2$ composites with titanium (VI) n-butoxide (TNB) as the titanium source for ACF pre-treated with iron compounds through the impregnation method. In terms of textural surface properties, the composites demonstrate a slight decrease in the BET surface area of the samples and an increase in the amount of iron compounds treated. The surface morphology of the Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ composites was characterized by means of SEM. The composites have a porous texture with homogenous compositions of Fe and titanium dioxide distributed on the sample surfaces. The phase formation and structural transition of the iron compounds and titanium dioxide were observed in X-ray diffraction patterns of the Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ composites. The chemical composition of the Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ composites, which was investigated with EDX shows strong peaks for the C, O, Fe and Ti elements. The photo degradation results confirm that the Fe-ACF/$TiO_2$ composites show excellent removal activity for the COD in piggery waste due to photocatalysis of the supported $TiO_2$, radical reaction by Fe species, and the adsorptivity and absorptivity of ACF.

  • Purpose: This study was to evaluate the shear bond strength of ceramic fused to Ni-Cr alloy(Alophaloy) by heat treatment. Methods: The specimens were divided into 5 groups according to heat treatment conditions prior to porcelain application. Eighteen specimens from each group were subjected to the shear load a universal testing machine using a 0.1mm/min cross-head speed and two specimens from each group were observed with SEM and EDX line profile. Results: The observation of the oxide film on the metal surface by SEM photograph showed a coarsening with an increasing degassing hold time. The diffusion of metal oxide was observed farther from the opaque layer in the heat treated specimen than no heat treated specimen. The shear bond strength measured highest to A5(55.23MPa) in the 10min holding group and measured lowest from A1(24.38MPa) in the no heat treated group, and there was a significant difference(p<0.05). Conclusion: The shear bond strength of Ni-Cr alloy improved in the heat treatment compared to the no heat treatment specimen.

  • A new precursor [$Zr(acac)_{3}(H_{2}O)_{2}$] was synthesized by Sonochemical technique and used to deposit thin $ZrO_{2}$ film on quartz and ceramic substrate via ultrasonic aerosol assisted chemical vapour deposition (UAACVD) at 300 ${^{\circ}C}$ in oxygen environment followed by annealing of the sample for 2-3 minutes at 500 ${^{\circ}C}$ in nitrogen ambient. The molecular structure of the precursor determined by single crystal X-ray analysis revealed that the molecules are linked through intermolecular hydrogen bonds forming pseudo six and eight membered rings. DSC and TGA/FTIR techniques were used to determine thermal behavior and decomposition temperature of the precursor and nature of evolved gas products. The optical measurement of annealed $ZrO_{2}$ film with tetragonal phase shows optical energy band gap of 5.01 eV. The particle size, morphology, surface structure and composition of deposited films were investigated by XRD, SEM and EDX.

  • Carbon/$TiO_2$ composite photocatalysts were thermally synthesized with different mixing ratios of anatase to phenol resin through an ethanol solvent dissolving method. The XRD patterns revealed that only anatase phase can be identified for Carbon/$TiO_2$ composites. The diffraction peaks of carbon were not observed, however, due to the low carbon content on the $TiO_2$ surfaces and the low crystallinity of amorphous carbon. The results of chemical elemental analyses of the Carbon/$TiO_2$ composites showed that most of the spectra for these samples gave stronger peaks for carbon and Ti metal than that of any other elements. The BET surface area increases to the maximum value of $488\;m^2/g$ with the area depending on the amount of phenol resin. From the SEM images, small $TiO_2$ particles were homogeneously distributed to a composite cluster with the porosity of phenol resin-based carbon. From the photocatalytic results, the MB degradation should be attributed to the three kinds of synergetic effects, such as photocatalysis, adsorptivity, and electron transfer by light absorption between supporter $TiO_2$ and carbon.

  • Metal-carbon/$TiO_2$ composite photocatalysts were thermally synthesized through the mixing of anatase to metal(Cu, Zn) containing phenol resin in an ethanol solvent coagulation method. The BET surface area increases, with the increase depending on the amount of metal salt used. From SEM images, metal components and carbon derived from phenol resin that contains metal was homogeneously distributed to composite particles with porosity. XRD patterns revealed that metal and titanium dioxide phase can be identified for metal-carbon/$TiO_2$ composites, however, the diffraction peaks of carbon were not observed due to the low carbon content on the $TiO_2$ surfaces and due to the low crystallinity of the amorphous carbon. The results of a chemical elemental analysis of the metal-carbon/$TiO_2$ composites showed that most of the spectra for these samples gave stronger peaks for C, O, treated metal components and Ti metal compared to that of any other elements. According to photocatalytic results, the MB degradation can be attributed to the three types of synergetic effect: photocatalysis, adsorptivity and electron transfer, according to the light absorption between the supporter $TiO_2$, metal species, and carbon layers.

  • We introduced a novel sustainable slow-releasing agrochemical formulation, a biopolymer bound to silica, for controlling plant diseases. The formulation was obtained through the following process. Curdlan, sodium silicate ($Na_2SiO_3$) and isopropyl alcohol were dissolved in DDW (Deionized-distilled water). The resultant solution was then irradiated using a $^{60}Co$ ${\gamma}$-irradiator (150 TBq of capacity; ACEL, Canada) at KAERI. The resultant solution was treated with phosphorous acid ($H_3PO_3$). Finally, we obtained a novel biopolymer-silica microsized formulation containing phosphorous acid ($H_3PO_3$) from the solution. The morphology of the complex was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). SEM and TEM images revealed that the curdlan-silica formulation has a particle size ranging from 1 to $3{\mu}m$ with high stability. We also detected that $H_3PO_3$ was distributed within the formulation through energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) analysis. $H_3PO_3$ was sustain-released from the formulation in water. Based on our results, it seems effectively that one or two applications of the formulation during a cropping season will assist in controlling various plant diseases.
