The present study was conducted to screen candidate probiotic strains for anti-inflammatory activity. Initially, a nitric oxide (NO) assay was used to test selected candidate probiotic strains for anti-inflammatory activity in cultures of the murine macrophage cell line, RAW 264.7. Then, the in vitro probiotic properties of the strains, including bile tolerance, acid resistance, and growth in skim milk media, were investigated. We also performed an in vitro hydrophobicity test and an intestinal adhesion assay using Caenorhabditis elegans as a surrogate in vivo model. From our screening, we obtained 4 probiotic candidate lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains based on their anti-inflammatory activity in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated RAW 264.7 cell cultures and the results of the in vitro and in vivo probiotic property assessments. Molecular characterization using 16S rDNA sequencing analysis identified the 4 LAB strains as Lactobacillus plantarum. The selected L. plantarum strains (CAU1054, CAU1055, CAU1064, and CAU1106) were found to possess desirable in vitro and in vivo probiotic properties, and these strains are good candidates for further investigations in animal models and human clinical studies to elucidate the mechanisms underlying their anti-inflammatory activities.

Objective: The aims of this study were 1) to develop easy-to-use rhythmic balance training equipment for the elderly and 2) to investigate the effect of training with the equipment on balance and physical function. Method: Twenty-one elderly individuals (age: $75.4{\pm}3.34yrs$, height: $152.07{\pm}4.81cm$, weight: $58.35{\pm}8.34kg$) participated in this study. Each participant underwent balance and physical function testing before and after 12 weeks of training with the equipment. Y-balance (i.e. dynamic balance) and one leg static balance tests were used for balance testing, and timed up- and-down-stairs and five times sit-to-stand tests were used for physical function testing. A paired t test was used to determine whether there was a significant pre- and post-training difference. Results: The rhythmic balance training equipment provided a fun and motivating training program with age-friendly music, dance movements for lower extremity strength training, and touch screen controls with simple features. Post-training left foot dynamic balance was significantly greater (p<.05), and static balance with eyes open was significantly improved (p<.05) compared to pre-training. Completion of the timed up-and-down-stairs and the five times sit-to-stand tests was significantly shorter (p<.05) compared to pre-training. Conclusion: Training using the equipment developed in this study improved balance and physical function in elderly participants.

The over-preparation of blood for elective surgery causes some problems such as returning of blood, inefficient task and loss of reagents. In recent blood transfusion practice, there has been changing patterns of blood use in elective surgery as various side effects of transfusion have become known and operation techniques are developed. This study was performed to evaluate the optimal utilization of blood for various elective and/or emergency surgery. We surveyed the quantity of blood transmitted to wards, returned to blood bank, and the number of crossmatching test done for the elective surgery of the patients at the D. University Hospital, the tertiary teaching hospital from August 1, 2001 to October 31, 2001. Crossmatched to transfusion ratio (C/T ratio) was calculated, in which C means the unit of accomplished crossmatching test and T means the unit of transfused blood component. The unit of transfused blood was analysed in terms of issuing time, sex, age, clinical department, and blood component type. The usage of bloods for the emergency surgery was also analyzed. In our study, C/T ratio was highest on Monday (1.54) and Tuesday (1.53), and higher in female patients(1.54) than in male patients (1.32). No significant relationship was observed between age groups. Among clinical departments, thoracic and cardiovascular surgery showed the highest C/T ratio (1.54). From above results, we could be sure that the management of transfusion practice was relatively appropriate in recent years, although the entire introduction of type and screen (T&S) method was desirable. If the T&S method is performed, the C/T ratio would be almost 1.00 and it would also relieve the duty of blood bank.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the criteria of evaluating clothing and web service on internet shopping malls related to consumers' shopping behavior, This study surveyed consumers who have an experience of buying products on the internet shopping mall and the questionnaire and judgment sampling was used. The subjects were 305 men and women living in the metropolitan area. Method of data analysis were factor analysis, t-test, ANOVA, Duncan test and descriptive statistics. The results were as follows: the items buy from the internet were t-shirts, blouses, knits, skirts and pants. The reasons for buying clothing on the internet were good prices, time saving, door-to-door delivery, while the reasons for not buying on the internet were worries about differences between the product shown on the screen and the actual one, quality guarantee, delivery accident and inconvenience in exchange and refund. Among the differences of clothing evaluation criteria according to internet shopping behavior, significant differences were found in the esthetic criteria and the quality performance criteria according to internet using hours, and in the esthetic criteria according to buying experiences. Among the differences of web service evaluation criteria according to internet shopping behavior, the differences among the groups were found in the reliance criteria, the product reference criteria, the order processing criteria and the handling after purchase criteria according to internet using hours. The significant differences were found in the handling after purchase criteria and the promotion$.$policy criteria according to buying experience, and in the promotion$.$policy criteria according to times of purchase.
This study was conducted to screen antitumoral activity by in vitro bioassay method using 60 Korean medicinal and food plants extracted by 80% EtOH. Antitumor activity test was applied by the PKC(protein kinase C) and antibleb formation, PLC (Phospholipase C), and colorimetric tetrazolium assay (MTT assay) methods. Chenopodjum album and black Glycine max showed high antitumoral activity by 73.5% and 81.0%, respectively, against PKC by bleb-forming assay and PKC enzyme assay on human chronic leukemia K562 cell. Black Glycine max also showed 91.2% antitumoral activity in the PLC method and the lowest $IC_{50}$$value(4.7{\mu}g/ml)$ by MTT method against P-338 cell line. In the effect of the concentration treatment on antitumoral test, the more concentration indicated the more activity value.

The purpose of this study was to compare the balance ability at different foot positions using K A T 2000 (Berg, Inc, vista, CA.1994). Thirty (male 15, female 15) normal subjects participated in this study. All subjects were tested at a one leg position or a two leg position that were toe-in $25^{\circ}$, toe-out $25^{\circ}$, and $45^{\circ}$. The starting position was where the subject crossed their arms across the chest and flexed knees slightily. The results of each test were displayed on a screen in a score format, which indicated balance index. These collected data were analyzed by using one way ANOVA, and t-test. The results of this study were as follows: When changing the angle of the foot in the one-foot and two-foot standing positions, there was no statistically significant difference, but the balance performance with the foot rotated by $25^{\circ}$ was better than that with the foot rotated by $45^{\circ}$. When changing the direction of the foot in the one-foot and two-foot standing positions, there was no statistically significant difference, but the balance performance with the foot rotated laterally was better - except for the case when the foot was medially rotated by $25^{\circ}$ in the right-foot static standing position. When the feet were medially rotated by $25^{\circ}$ in the two-foot static standing position, and were medially rotated by $25^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ in the one-foot static standing position, the balance performance of females was better than that of males. In this study, it was found that the balance performance of the subjects changed when the position of the foot was shifted on an unstable base of support. However, there was little correlation between balance performance and the height, weight and foot length of the subjects. It is necessary to conduct a follow-up study targeting various age groups and those with various diseases using an unstable platform or applying different physical or visual conditions, such as the length of the legs. Physical therapists need to consider the position of the foot in clinical settings for a better balance training or assessment.

This study evaluates the difference in visual images according to changes in waist position and pants style. The researcher made twelve stimuli-combination of four pants styles (classic, baggy, skinny, bell-bottom) and three waist positions (0cm, -3cm, -5cm). The test involved 48 female college students. The stimuli were made using the i-Designer computer program. The panels tested the screen images of all manikins wearing pants. A 7-point scale was used to evaluate each image. For the data analysis, the ANOVA and Duncan-test were applied along with an SPSS program. The results of this study are as follows. The visual evaluations by pants style and waist position are composed of seven factors (attractiveness, attention, hip, activity, height, waist, abdomen). Among these factors, attractiveness is evaluated to be the most important factor. The mutual agreement of the visual effect (according to pants style and waist position) was indicated as four factors of attractiveness, attention, waist, and abdomen. The height factor is evaluated to be the most important factor by change in regards to waist position. The 0cm waist position of three styles (classic, baggy, bell-bottom) were evaluated positively in elongated height whereas the -3cm, -5cm waist position of the skinny style was evaluated positively in elongated height. The mutual agreements of visual effect (according to pants style and waist position) were not indicated.
Coix lacryma-jobi (Hanjeli) is known to posses anti-microbial properties. Therefore, phytochemical compounds of C. lacryma-jobi have been studied to produce novel antimicrobial agents as treatments against antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The objective of this study was to determine the phytochemical composition and antibacterial activity of the C. lacryma-jobi oil against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Bacillus subtilis. The phytochemical composition of the oil was determined via gas chromatography mass spectrophotometry (GC-MS). Moreover, agar disk and agar well diffusion were employed to screen the antibacterial activity of the oil. An agar well diffusion test was implemented to determinate MIC's (minimum inhibitory concentrations). Dodecanoic acid, tetradecanoic acid, 2,3-dihydroxypropylester, 1,3-dioctanoin, N-methoxy-N-methyl-3,4-dihydro-2H-thiopyran6-carboxamide, propanamide, 5-Amino-1-(quinolin-8-yl)-1,2,3-triazole-4-carboxamide, and pyridine were identified in the C. lacryma-jobi oil. The MIC value of the oil was 0.031 g/L and the MBC of the oil was 0.125 g/L effective in all test bacteria. Dodecanoic acid displayed inhibitory activity against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. Therefore, our research demonstrated C. lacryma-jobi (Hanjeli) oil exhibited antibacterial activity against E. coli, S. aureus, and B. subtilis. These research suggest that C. lacryma-jobi root oil could be used for medicinal purposes; however clinical and in vivo tests must be performed to evaluate its potential as an antibacterial agent.
