  • This paper introduces a new method of improvement for marine soft ground, MLPP (Marine large Pack Pile). The MLPP is a reinforcement technique far the conventional SCP or GCP piles by confining them with geotextile pack. A pilot project at Busan New Port site and laboratory model tests were carried out to investigate the settlement reduction and bearing capacity enhancement effect of pack pile. The results of field and laboratory tests show that MLPP method can be a safe and economic alternative method for SCP and GCP.

  • In this research, the characteristics of settlement and consolidation behavior of the composite ground formation reinforced by Recycled-Aggregate Porous Concrete Pile (RAPP) were evaluated by conducting a series of laboratory chamber tests. The effect of settlement reduction was verified by comparing the settlement of the composite ground formation with that of the unreinforced ground. In addition, it was studied how much the RAPP can accelerate consolidation in assessment of the degree of consolidation in the composite ground formation. The amount of settlement reduction was decreased with an increase on surcharge pressure, but it was greater than that of the SCP method. The RAPP and the SCP showed a similar rate of consolidation.

  • In this study, numerical analysis was carried out for both partially penetrated SCP(sand compaction pile) and fully penetrated SCP constructed into the ground. Midas GTS was used as a FEM analysis program, which is widely used in geotechnical engineering. For the analysis, ground displacement, effective stress and pore water pressure at the time both just after embankment on the ground and 365days later were compared and analyzed. As the results, the effect regarding partially penetrated SCP was similar to the effect regarding fully penetrated SCP under the bottom of the center of embankment when considering the safety towards shear failure.

  • Based from the results of various field and laboratory tests, it was determined that VCCP(Vibrated Crushed-stone Compaction Pile) Method is more effective compared to SCP(Sand Compaction Pile) Method. VCCP method effectively increases soil bearing capacity and reinforces soil and slopes, prevents liquefaction, enhances drainage. But when it comes to the engineering design these factors are not considered, instead designs are performed using practical methods and equations. Furthermore, this method is very economical since crushed stone can be used instead of sand and it can be also used in off-shore construction. In this paper, it will be synthetically considered technical state at the present time, research object after this and necessity of research for VCCP Method.

  • In this research, the value of consolidation index was investigated. The range of the investigated standard deviation was analyzed and the deviation based settlement was calculated. Also, the compression index, which is the effect of the uncertainty in the ground was analyzed using the flimsy ground construction method. The settlement behavior in each embankment compaction stage was analyzed by applying the precompression load method, drainage expediting method, and displacement method through numerical analysis. In addition to the above, the settlement behavior was studied by analyzing the Piled Raft method which is stable for long term settlement. As a result, the final settlement amount based on average analysis results was that the settlement based on each of the average interpretation value, mean value of the maximum and minimum value and average compression index was different. The result of the comparison shows the difference in variation coefficient by the difference in time. Amongst them, the Piled Raft method shows the most consistent variation coefficient regardless of time and it also was least affected by the compression index of uncertainty.

  • In order to accelerate the rate of consolidation settlement, to reduce settlement, and to increase bearing capacity for soft ground under quay wall, sand compaction pile method (SCP) has widely been applied. Improved ground is composite ground which is consisted of the sand pile-surrounding clayey soil. As caisson and upper structures are installed on SCP composite ground, the settlement is compositively occurred by elastic compression of sand compaction piles and also consolidation of the surrounding clay ground. In this study, the combined settlement model is proposed to predict the settlement of SCP composite ground in basis of elastic theory for sand compaction pile and consolidation theory for marine soft clay. Optimization technique was performed based on back-analysis so that real coded genetic algorithm was applied to estimate the parameters of the proposed settlement model. Case analysis was carried out for a domestic SCP composite ground to examine the applicability of the proposed prediction technique.

  • Sand Compaction Pile (SCP) is a soft-ground improvement technique used for not only accelerating consolidation but also increasing bearing capacity of soils. In this study, laboratory tests and 3-D finite element analysis were peformed to investigate the characteristics of load transfer in SCP with an emphasis on free-strain behavior of piles with low replacement ratios in the range of 30 to $50\%$. Through these focused tests and numerical analyses, we proposed a simplified method to analyze the load transfer characteristics of SCP in soft ground. Moreover, it was shown that estimated normal stresses in SCP using the proposed method were in a reasonable agreement with actual values.

  • In this study, the reliable and simple analysis method was proposed to predict the settlement characteristic of composite ground in stage of design and construction of sand compaction pile (SCP). Model parameters could be obtained by the optimization process based on genetic algorithm. In order to examine the proposed method, laboratory consolidation tests on the settlement characteristic of SCP composite ground were performed for various replacement ratio of sand such as 0 (no replacement), 20, 36, and 56%. The proposed model showed very good agreements with measured data in the relation of void ratio-log scaled stress and time-compression far each replacement ratio.
