Monitoring water surface has become one of the most prominent areas of research in addressing environmental challenges.Accurate and automated detection of watersurface in remote sensing imagesis crucial for disaster prevention, urban planning, and water resource management, particularly for a country where water plays a vital role in human life. However, achieving precise detection poses challenges. Previous studies have explored different approaches, such as analyzing water indexes, like normalized difference water index (NDWI) derived from satellite imagery's visible or infrared bands and using k-means clustering analysis to identify land cover patterns and segment regions based on similar attributes. Nonetheless, challenges persist, notably distinguishing between waterspectralsignatures and cloud shadow or terrain shadow. In thisstudy, our objective is to enhance the precision of water surface detection by constructing a comprehensive water database (DB) using existing digital and land cover maps. This database serves as an initial assumption for automated water index analysis. We utilized 1:5,000 and 1:25,000 digital maps of Korea to extract water surface, specifically rivers, lakes, and reservoirs. Additionally, the 1:50,000 and 1:5,000 land cover maps of Korea aided in the extraction process. Our research demonstrates the effectiveness of utilizing a water DB product as our first approach for efficient water surface extraction from satellite images, complemented by our second and third approachesinvolving NDWI analysis and k-means analysis. The image segmentation and binary mask methods were employed for image analysis during the water extraction process. To evaluate the accuracy of our approach, we conducted two assessments using reference and ground truth data that we made during this research. Visual interpretation involved comparing our results with the global surface water (GSW) mask 60 m resolution, revealing significant improvements in quality and resolution. Additionally, accuracy assessment measures, including an overall accuracy of 90% and kappa values exceeding 0.8, further support the efficacy of our methodology. In conclusion, thisstudy'sresults demonstrate enhanced extraction quality and resolution. Through comprehensive assessment, our approach proves effective in achieving high accuracy in delineating watersurfaces from satellite images.
The spectral information based image analysis, visual interpretation and automatic classification have been widely carried out so far for remote sensing data processing. Yet recently, many researchers have tried to extract the spatial information which cannot be expressed directly in the image itself. Using the texture and wavelet scheme, we made a wavelet-based texture fusion image which includes the advantages of each scheme. Moreover, using these schemes, we carried out image classification for the urban spatial analysis and the geological structure analysis around the caldera area. These two case studies showed that image classification accuracy of texture image and wavelet-based texture fusion image is better than that of using only raw image. In case of the urban area using high resolution image, as both texture and wavelet based texture fusion image are added to the original image, the classification accuracy is the highest. Because detailed spatial information is applied to the urban area where detail pixel variation is very significant. In case of the geological structure analysis using middle and low resolution image, the images added by only texture image showed the highest classification accuracy. It is interpreted to be necessary to simplify the information such as elevation variation, thermal distribution, on the occasion of analyzing the relatively larger geological structure like a caldera. Therefore, in the image analysis using spatial information, each spatial information analysis method should be carefully selected by considering the characteristics of the satellite images and the purpose of study.

Recently the dramatical development of domestic spatial information technology and the successful construction of Korea NGIS(Nation Geographic Information System) have been the foundation of the scientific national territory utilization and management. However, there still exists the original problems to construct the thematic maps for supporting the various administrative services because administrative officials tend to depend on paper maps and inventories to generate spatial information, process, upgrade and manage. In this situation, there is a greater need to develop GIS system for the effective construction of various thematic maps. In this study, the satellite image based high accurate e-thematic construction and management system was developed to support the forest administrative service such as generating user based forest thematic maps, modifying them, analyzing and outputting through GIS, GPS and satellite images. For the case study, the previous forest paper map of Jeju Island was converted in format of raster and vector data using satellite images to maintain more exact location information so that this system helps to manage domestic spatial information scientifically and effectively within shorter time then support the standard for domestic spatial information. Moreover, this system plays the role of DSS(Decision Supporting System) for forest administrative affairs by integrating the attribute data, managing the GPS data and linking the multimedia data. For this, the additional main objective of this study was acquired powerful GIS component, which is called as e-mapping component, so that it could be regarded as enabling interoperability and reusability within this application. For the future works, the essential element idea and technology in this study could be applied very usefully to other official works such as constructing thematic maps and supporting the desired affairs.
Sea Surface Temperature (SST) is one of the most important oceanic variables to understand rapidly-changing climate, so that accurate and error-free SST images should be presented in school science textbooks. However, satelliteobserved SST images in the high-school textbooks presented some errors caused by various reasons. This study analyzed 36 satellite images for SST presented in 24 kinds of high-school textbooks (earth science I and II textbooks on the basis of the 7th National Curriculum) for 17 items. This study investigated errors in image processing such as cloud removal, land masking, color bar, geological and time information, and some erroneous expressions related to the fundamental information of satellites. Twenty five pre-service teachers filled out a survey about several problematic satellite images, and their responses were analyzed. As a result, most of the pre-service teachers did not recognize the errors associated with image processing and tended to comprehend the SST errors as real oceanographic phenomena such as sea ice, river outflow, or cold current. Therefore, satellite SST images in the textbooks should be accurately presented by including detailed items suggested in this study.

With the increasing events of natural disasters caused by unpredictable atmospheric movements, the importance of weather forecasting is increasingly emphasized. In this paper, we adopt satellite radar imageries to deal with unusual weather events over Korean region including yellow sand that swept over Korea in spring 2007 and typhoon EWNIAR in 2006. Korea has suffered from these natural events with increasing frequencies over last decades and the satellite radar imaging is considered the most appropriate method to track and analyze the characteristics of the events spanning from mainland China to Japan. The yellow sand mostly comes from Manju area in China and consists of tiny particles so that they move with high speed resulting in difficulty in predicting their moving paths. With the use of various radar images taken at regular time intervals, we could possibly derive the expected movement of the yellow sand particles. In the future, with the help of radar images taken at very short intervals, satellite radar image analysis will become a very useful tool to predict and prepare for the natural disastrous events caused by abrupt change in the atmosphere and deserts around Korea.

A two-axis gimbal-type X-band antenna mounted on an observation satellite can efficiently transmit high-capacity image data to a ground station regardless of both the satellite position and the orbital motion. However, this X-band antenna induces unnecessary micro-jitter which can degrade the image quality of the high-resolution observation satellite. Therefore, to achieve the high-resolution image quality from the observation satellite, micro-jitters have been required to be isolated. In this study, to resolve aforementioned drawback, we proposed blade gear using a shape memory alloy (SMA) applied to azimuth stage of X-band antenna. To investigate the rotational basic characteristics of the proposed SMA blade gear, we performed rotational static loading test. Futhermore, to evaluate the cycle to failure of the gear, accelerated life test was conducted. The temperature test was conducted to confirm rotational basic characteristics at various temperature conditions. To verify the isolation performance for micro-jitter, we performed micro-jitter measurement test.
Abstract Monitoring is the most critical element in implementing "forest carbon offset project" to enhance the visibility of CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) in North Korea. This study is intended to explore monitoring potential in terms of forest carbon offset project using satellite image for Baekdu mountain of North Korea. The permanent record of standard satellite remote sensing system demonstrated its capability of presenting area-wide visual evidences of monitoring conditions in Mt. Baekdu mountain of North Korea (site suitability, carbon stock by forest biomass growth, carbon emission by forest biomass loss, deforestation and degradation, environmental, social and economic impact specified in the Carbon Sequestration Law). It doesn't seem very difficult to comply with monitoring requirements for "the forest carbon offset project" due to the probative value of satellite data. Therefore, it could be considerable or realistic approach to utilize CSR based forest carbon offset project as a point of reform and open-door in North Korea. It is anticipated that this research output could be used as a valuable reference for Korea-based enterprises to ensure monitoring potentials using satellite image in exploring forest carbon offset project sites in North Korea.

This paper describes a multi-scale user interaction based tiled display visualization system using multiple input devices for monitoring and analyzing Geostationary Ocean Color Imager (GOCI) observation satellite imagery. This system provides multi-touch screen, Kinect motion sensing, and moblie interface for multiple users to control the satellite imagery either in front of the tiled display screen or far away from a distance to view marine environmental or climate changes around Korean peninsular more effectively. Due to a large amount of memory required for loading high-resolution GOCI satellite images, we employed the multi-level image load technique where the image was divided into small tiled images in order to reduce the load on the system and to be operated smoothly by user manipulation. This system performs the abstraction of common input information from multi-user Kinect motion and gestures, multi-touch points and mobile interaction information to enable a variety of user interactions for any tiled display application. In addition, the unit of time corresponding to the selected date of the satellite images are sequentially displayed on the screen and multiple users can zoom-in/out, move the imagery and select buttons to trigger functions.

Images taken with KOMPSAT-3 have additional NIR and PAN bands, as well as RGB regions of the visible ray band, compared to imagestaken with a standard camera. Furthermore, electrical and optical properties must be considered because a wide radius area of approximately 17 km or more is photographed at an altitude of 685 km above the ground. In other words, the camera sensor of KOMPSAT-3 is distorted by each CCD pixel, characteristics of each band, sensitivity and time-dependent change, CCD geometry. In order to solve the distortion, correction of the sensors is essential. In this paper, we propose a method for detecting uniform regions in side-slider-based KOMPSAT-3 images using segment-based noise analysis. After detecting a uniform area with the corresponding algorithm, a correction table was created for each sensor to apply the non-uniformity correction algorithm, and satellite image correction was performed using the created correction table. As a result, the proposed method reduced the distortion of the satellite image, such as vertical noise, compared to the conventional method. The relative radiation accuracy index, which is an index based on mean square error (RA) and an index based on absolute error (RE), wasfound to have a comparative advantage of 0.3 percent and 0.15 percent, respectively, over the conventional method.

Currently, the Korea Meteorological Administration evaluates the meteorological drought by region using SPI6(standardized precipitation index 6), which is a 6-month cumulative precipitation standard. However, SPI is an index calculated only in consideration of precipitation at 69 weather stations, and the drought phenomenon that appears for complex reasons cannot be accurately determined. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to calculate and compare SPI considering only precipitation and SDCI (Scaled Drought Condition Index) considering precipitation, vegetation index, and temperature in Gyeonggi. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of the station data-based drought index and the satellite image-based drought index were identified by using results calculated through the comparison of SPI and SDCI. MODIS(MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) satellite image data, ASOS(Automated Synoptic Observing System) data, and kriging were used to calculate SDCI. For the duration of precipitation, SDCI1, SDCI3, and SDCI6 were calculated by applying 1-month, 3-month, and 6-month respectively to the 8 points in 2014. As a result of calculating the SDCI, unlike the SPI, drought patterns began to appear about 2-month ago, and drought by city and county in Gyeonggi was well revealed. Through this, it was found that the combination of satellite image data and station data increased efficiency in the pattern of drought index change, and increased the possibility of drought prediction in wet areas along with existing dry areas.
