  • Today, satellites are widely used in many fields like communication and image recoding. The image acquired by satellites contains variety information of wide region. Therefore, they are used for agriculture, resource exploitation and management, and military purpose. The satellite is required to acquire images effectively in a given time period. Because the period that satellites can acquire images is very restrictive. In this study, the modeling of processing time and attitude maneuvering for satellite image acquisition is performed. From this modeling, mission planning algorithm using heuristic evaluation function is suggested and performance of the proposed algorithm is verified by numerical simulation.

  • Remote sensing technology is one of the most powerful tools for human to know the nature and their living environment. However, before microwave remote sensing was developed and applied, remote sensing application was limited strongly by weather and time. Microwave remote sensing technology solves the problem. It makes us to have the capability to acquire information at all time of the day and under all weather condition, and make remote sensing technology be used in more wider area. Microwave remote sensing system include mainly Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), Microwave Radiometer, Microwave Scatterometer, and Altimeter (ALT). As SAR can acquire image whose spatial resolution is similar with visible and infrared image, it is paying much attention to and playing a more and more important role in earth observation. In recent year, the development of new SAR technology (multi-band and multi-polarization technology, InSAR technology, D-InSAR technology, and so on) makes SAR remote sensing go to an new stage, and its application area become more and more widely. The first Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) in the world appeared in 1960. After that, SAR and its application all developed very fast. Some radar satellites launched and run (include Seasat-A in 1978, ERS-1 in 1991, JERS-1 in 1992, Radarsat in 1995, and so on) promote SAR research and application in world greatly. China began to develop its SAR sensor and research SAR application in 1970s. After more than 30 years' research, it get some important development in sensor development data processing method, and application. Some operational systems have been used and play an important role. This paper will introduce the development of SAR technology and its application in China.

  • This study presents the use of multi-temporal JERS-1 SAR images to the land cover classification. So far, land cover classified by high resolution aerial photo and field survey and so on. The study site was located in Non-san area. This study developed on multi-temporal land cover status monitoring and coherence information mapping can be processing by L band SAR image. From July, 1997 to October, 1998 JERS SAR images (9 scenes) coherence values are analyzed and then classified land cover. This technique which forms the basis of what is called SAR Interferometry or InSAR for short has also been employed in spaceborne systems. In such systems the separation of the antennas, called the baseline is obtained by utilizing a single antenna in a repeat pass

  • A synthetic aperture radar (SAR) system can provide all-weather, day and night imaging capability, and thus, is very useful in surveillance for both civil and military applications. In this paper, the X-band spaceborne SAR system design procedure is introduced with the key design parameters for mission and system requirements characterized by the small satellite platform. The SAR imaging mode design technique is presented, and the design results are analyzed for standard mode performance evaluation. In line with the system requirements, the X-band SAR payload and ground reception/processing sub-systems are presented with the key design results and image applications examples. The designed small satellite SAR system shows the wide range of imaging capability, and proves to be an effective surveillance system in light-weight, high-performance and cost-effective points of view.

  • In this paper, a modified FSA(Frequency Scaling Algorithm) is proposed for KOMPSAT-5 high-resolution SAR image generation. In order to enhance performance of azimuth compression, degraded in sub-aperture processing due to the imperfect geometric parameter of data acquisition, the full-aperture signal processing algorithm is designed based on the exact time-frequency analysis. In addition, an azimuth scaling function is newly devised to make the full-aperture processing algorithm suitable for KOMPSAT-5 sliding-spotlight mode. Different from the previous sub-aperture FSA schemes, the suggested technique could accommodate the merit of unified signal processing structure regardless of operational modes of KOMPSAT-5. Through the point target simulation, it is verified that the suggested algorithm provides superior performance of azimuth compression over the existing full-aperture processing methods. The experimental results using real data acquired by KOMPSAT-5 are also given to demonstrate the effectiveness of our scheme as well.

  • For TOPS InSAR processing, high-precision image co-registration is required. We propose an image co-registration method suitable for the TOPS mode by comparing the performance of cross correlation method, the geometric co-registration and the enhanced spectral diversity (ESD) matching algorithm based on the spectral diversity (SD) on the Sentinel-1 TOPS mode image. Using 23 pairs of interferometric pairs generated from 25 Sentinel-1 TOPS images, we applied the cross correlation (CC), geometric correction with only orbit information (GC1), geometric correction combined with iterative cross-correlation (GC2, GC3, GC4), and ESD iteration (ESD_GC, ESD_1, ESD_2). The mean of co-registration errors in azimuth direction by cross correlation and geometric matching are 0.0041 pixels and 0.0016 pixels, respectively. Although the ESD method shows the most accurate result with the error of less than 0.0005 pixels, the error of geometric co-registration is reduced to 0.001 pixels by repetition through additional cross correlation matching between the reference and resampled slave image. The ESD method is not applicable when the coherence of the burst overlap areas is low. Therefore, the geometric co-registration method through iterative processing is a suitable alternative for time series analysis using multiple SAR data or generating interferogram with long time intervals.

  • Using multi-sensor or multi-temporal high resolution satellite images together is essential for efficient applications in remote sensing area. The purpose of this paper is to estimate geometric difference of translations between high-resolution optical and SAR images automatically. The geometric and radiometric pre-processing steps were fulfilled to calculate the similarity between optical and SAR images by using Mutual Information method. The coarsest-level pyramid images of each sensor constructed by gaussian pyramid method were generated to estimate the initial translation difference of the x, y directions for calculation efficiency. The precise geometric difference of translations was able to be estimated by applying this method from coarsest-level pyramid image to original image in order. Yet even when considered only translation between optical and SAR images, the proposed method showed RMSE lower than 5m in all study sites.
