  • In this paper, we analyzed the electric/magnetic field distribution and SAR distribution in a human body due to the resonant-type wireless power transfer(WPT) system with an operating frequency of 6.78 MHz. To analyze the field distribution under the unperturbed condition, a prototype system was fabricated and the measured results were compared with the simulation results. For safety during measurement, the available power to the transmitter coil is limited to 1 W. To analyze the induced current density and SAR distribution, a simple human model consisting of three layers, skin, fat, and muscle, was used for the simulation. The electromagnetic wave exposure levels obtained through measurement and simulation were compared with the recommended levels by the ICNIRP.

  • A synthetic aperture radar(SAR) satellite is more effective than an optical satellite for target analysis because an SAR satellite can provide two-dimensional electromagnetic scattering distribution of a target during all-weather and day-and-night operations. To conduct target analysis while considering the earth observation interval of an SAR satellite, observing a specific area as wide as possible would be advantageous. However, wider the observation area, worse is the resolution of the associated SAR satellite image. Although conventional methods for improving the resolution of radar images can be employed for addressing this issue, few studies have been conducted for improving the resolution of SAR satellite images and analyzing the performance. Hence, in this study, the applicability of conventional methods to SAR satellite images is investigated. SAR target detection was first applied to Korea Multipurpose Satellite-5(KOMPSAT-5) SAR images provided by Korea Aerospace Research Institute for extracting target responses. Extrapolation, RELAX, and MUSIC algorithms were subsequently applied to the target responses for improving the resolution, and the corresponding performance was thereby analyzed.

  • Satellite synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images from 1995 to 2001 and field measurements of sea surface wind, sea state, and vertical stratification are used for statistical analyses of internal wave (IW) occurrence and SAR imaging conditions in the northern South China Sea (NSCS). Latitudinal distribution of IW packets shows that 22% of IW packets distributed in the east of $118^{\circ}E$ and 78% of IW packets in the west of $118^{\circ}E$. The yearly distribution of IW occurrence frequencies reveals an interannual variability. The monthly SAR-observed IW occurrence frequencies show that the high frequencies are distributed from April to July and reach a peak in June. The low occurrence frequencies are distributed in winter from December to February of next year. These statistical features are explained by solitary wave dynamics.

  • This paper demonstrates that RADARSAT ScanSAR data can be an important data source of radar remote sensing for monitoring crop systems and estimation of rice yield for large areas in tropic and sub-tropical regions. Experiments were carried out to show the effectiveness of RADARSAT ScanSAR data for rice yield estimation in whole province of Guangdong, South China. A methodology was developed to deal with a series of issues in extracting rice information from the ScanSAR data, such as topographic influences, levels of agro-management, irregular distribution of paddy fields and different rice cropping systems. A model was provided for rice yield estimation based on the relationship between the backscatter coefficient of multi-temporal SAR data and the biomass of rice.

  • Performance of the applicator for hyperthermia is determined by both the degree of impedance matching and specific absorption rate(SAR) distribution in the surrounding tissue. In this paper, the coaxial-slot antenna using staircasing approximation in the FDTD is analyzed and the coaxial-slot antenna for the hyperthermia improving heating characteristics is designed. The SAR of the coaxial-slot antenna approximated to staircasing and square model is analyzed, and the SAR of staircasing model is compared with Saito's SAR measurement and square model. As a result, the SAR of proposed model exhibited agreement with the Saito's measurement of square model. Ig averaged SAR on the liver caused by proposed antenna in this paper is 195 W/kg, and is about 27.9 % higher than the Saito's antenna 152.5 W/kg, respectively.

  • Modeling of artificial targets in Synthetic Aperture radar (SAR) mainly simulates radar signals reflected from the faces and edges of the 3D Computer Aided Design (CAD) model with a ray-tracing method, and modeling of the clutter on the Earth's surface uses a method of distinguishing types with similar distribution characteristics through statistical analysis of the SAR image itself. In this paper, man-made targets on the surface and background clutter on the terrain are integrated and made into a three-dimensional (3D) point cloud scatterer model, and SAR image were created through computational signal processing. The results of the SAR Stripmap image generation of the actual automobile based SAR radar system and the results analyzed using EM modeling or statistical distribution models are compared with this 3D point cloud scatterer model. The modeling target is selected as an bridge because it has the characteristic of having both water surface and ground terrain around the bridge and is also a target of great interest in both military and civilian use.

  • We measure subsidences occurred in a reclaimed coastal land, Noksan industrial complex, by using JERS-1 SAR (1996-1998) and RADARSAT-1 SAR (2002-2003) dataset. SAR with a high spatial resolution (about several or several tens meter) can reveal the two-dimensional distribution of settlement that would be bardly estimated from in situ measurements. The DInSAR results show significant deformation signal associated with soil consolidation. Accuracy of the settlements estimated by 2-pass differential interferometry (DInSAR) is evaluated using the measurements of settlement gauge. A two-dimensional subsidence map is constructed from 7 qualified pairs. Comparing the JERS-1 radar measurements with the ground truth data yields the correlation coefficient of 0.87 (RMSE of 1.44 cm). The regression line shows the gradient of 1.04 and intercepts close to the origin, which implies that the unbiased settlement can be measured by DInSAR technique. The residual settlements are also detected from RADARSAT-1 pairs. The extent and amount of the settlements are matched well with ground truth data.

  • The main objective of this study is to analyse the polarimetric characteristics of the various terrain targets by ground-based polarimetric SAR system and to confirm the compatible and effective polarimetric analysis method to reveal the polarization properties of different terrain targets by the GB-SAR. The fully polarimetric GB-SAR data with HH, HV, VH, and VV components were focused using the Deramp-FFT (DF) algorithm. The focused GB-SAR images were processed by the H/A/$\alpha$ polarimetric decomposition and the combined H/$\alpha$ or H/A/$\alpha$ and Wishart classification method. The segmented image and distribution graphs in H/$\alpha$ plane using Cloude and Pottier's method showed a reliable result that this quad-polarization GB-SAR data could be useful to classified corresponding scattering mechanism. The H/$\alpha$-Wishart and H/A/$\alpha$-Wishart classification results showed that a natural media and an artificial target were discriminated by the combined classification, in particular, after applying multi-looking and the Lee refined speckle filter.

  • SAR calculation method following the Mobi-Kids study protocol is analyzed and evaluation method of cumulative RF dose from mobile phones which have been used by a subject of case and control groups is proposed. An SAR database is built by calculating SAR distributions in 4 head models at different ages for representative phone models with the same conducted power. To obtain SAR distribution in a subject's head for a specific commercial phone which had/have been used by him/her, an SAR correction factor using SAR compliance test results is determined. Cumulative dose is calculated by considering mobile phone characteristics and use pattern such as call time and laterality(right and left).

  • Due to the rapid growth of mobile communication services, many studies have been performed on the biological effects of EMF(Electromagnetic field) exposure. However, it is not easy to create the field uniformity in radio frequency. To overcome this difficulty, the electric field and SAR(Specific Absorption Rate) distribution is developed to measure the whole body exposure system. In this paper, we developed the whole body exposure system for in-vivo study utilizing reverberation chamber which has a high possibility of practical use by substituting previous the EMC chamber. The field uniformity in the test area of the designed reverberation chamber was satisfied by the simulation and measurement data. In animal study of the whole body exposure for a mouse, the results of FDTD simulation were compared with those of measurement to confirm SAR under the electromagnetic exposure. We analyze the electric field distribution in the interior of the reverberation chamber and treat these results in statistical manner. In the CDMA frequency band(PCS & Cellular band), an average value of the whole body SAR and local peak value for a experimental mouse were presented for various input power.
