Most of the public and private users who use national satellite information such as the KOMPSAT series mainly use Electro-Optical and Infrared (EO/IR) satellite images, and the utilization of Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images is relatively insufficient. As KOMPSAT-5 currently in operation, KOMPSAT-6 and micro SAR satellite constellation systems are scheduled to be launched in the future, the demand for utilization of SAR satellite information is increasing in various fields. Accordingly, it is necessary to possess core technology for SAR utilization that can support the utilization of SAR satellite information for users. Due to the all-weather properties of SAR system, change detection technology is a key application technology. However, until now, the development of technology that automatic change detection and cueing using SAR images is insufficient. Through this study, the requirements of automatic change detection and cueing function using multi-temporal KOMPSAT-5 SAR satellite images were derived and a prototype program was developed. This prototype program aims to secure independent SAR utilization technology and promote the utilization of domestic SAR satellite information by practitioners in public sector organizations in Korea.

Korea's first X-band SAR satellite KOMPSAT-5 has been launched in 2013, so the research related to the X-band SAR satellite image is required to increase the utilization of KOMPSAT-5. In this study, we generated a DEM(Digital Elevation Model) using X-band SAR satellite images based on three methods which are InSAR, radargrammetry and RPC(Rational Polynomial Coefficients), and evaluated the performance of each methods. The four stripmap mode TerraSAR-X images taken in Daejeon were used to generate DEM, and accuracy was evaluated using DEM by IKONOS RPC. As results, DEM produced by the InSAR showed the highest accuracy. Also, we knew that RPC could be effective method if you want to create a large area DEM which contains the various elevation.

Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR) imaging system is independent of solar illumination and weather conditions; however, SAR image is difficult to interpret as compared with optical images. It has been increased interest in multi-sensor fusion technique which can improve the interpretability of $SAR^{\circ\circ}$ images by fusing the spectral information from multispectral(MS) image. In this paper, a multi-sensor fusion method based on high-frequency extraction process using Fast Fourier Transform(FFT) and outlier elimination process is proposed, which maintain the spectral content of the original MS image while retaining the spatial detail of the high-resolution SAR image. We used TerraSAR-X which is constructed on the same X-band SAR system as KOMPSAT-5 and KOMPSAT-2 MS image as the test data set to evaluate the proposed method. In order to evaluate the efficiency of the proposed method, the fusion result was compared visually and quantitatively with the result obtained using existing fusion algorithms. The evaluation results showed that the proposed image fusion method achieved successful results in the fusion of SAR and MS image compared with the existing fusion algorithms.

SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) has characteristics well-suited for the measurement of geophysical parameters during day and night in all weather conditions. Recently, SAR data with high resolution acquired by satellites became available to the public. In such data, many features and phenomena of geometric structure of man-made objects and natural environments become observable. In this paper, we discuss main considerations including geometric distortion and coregistration for efficient utilization of high resolution SAR images. And, various advanced technologies in SAR application fields are introduced.
The city of Khartoum, the capital of Sudan, was heavily damaged by the flood of the Nile in 2020. Classification using satellite images can define the damaged area and help emergency response. As Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) uses microwave that can penetrate cloud, it is suitable to use in the flood study. In this study, Random Forest classifier, one of the supervised classification algorithms, was applied to the flood event in Khartoum with various sizes of the training dataset and number of images using Sentinel-1 SAR. To create a training dataset, we used unsupervised classification and visual inspection. Firstly, Random Forest was performed by reducing the size of each class of the training dataset, but no notable difference was found. Next, we performed Random Forest with various number of images. Accuracy became better as the number of images in creased, but converged to a maximum value when the dataset covers the duration from flood to the completion of drainage.
With the recent increase in available high-resolution (< ~1 m) satellite SAR images, the demand for precise registration of SAR images is increasing in various fields including change detection. The registration between high-resolution SAR images acquired in different look angle is difficult due to speckle noise and geometric distortion caused by the characteristics of SAR images. In this study, registration is performed in two stages, coarse and fine, using the x-band SAR data imaged at staring spotlight mode of TerraSAR-X. For the coarse registration, a method combining the adaptive sampling method and SAR-SIFT (Scale Invariant Feature Transform) is applied, and three rigid methods (NCC: Normalized Cross Correlation, Phase Congruency-NCC, MI: Mutual Information) and one non-rigid (Gefolki: Geoscience extended Flow Optical Flow Lucas-Kanade Iterative), for the fine registration stage, was performed for performance comparison. The results were compared by using RMSE (Root Mean Square Error) and FSIM (Feature Similarity) index, and all rigid models showed poor results in all image combinations. It is confirmed that the rigid models have a large registration error in the rugged terrain area. As a result of applying the Gefolki algorithm, it was confirmed that the RMSE of Gefolki showed the best result as a 1~3 pixels, and the FSIM index also obtained a higher value than 0.02~0.03 compared to other rigid methods. It was confirmed that the mis-registration due to terrain effect could be sufficiently reduced by the Gefolki algorithm.

The oil spill accident near Goeje Island on April 3, 1997 was analyzed using two RADARSAT SAR images. The first scene was acquired 3 days after the accident as an extended low beam mode and the second scene was acquired 12 hours after the first scene as a standard beam mode. The two scenes showed slicks not only by oil spills but also by oil spill look-alikes caused by wind sheltering, low wind, natural film, and etc. These slicks were analyzed and classified, and natural films produced from aquaculture farms around Goeje Island were also suggested as a strong candidate for slicks on SAR images. The study with two SAR imags indicated the oil spill patterns which spreaded to the southwest immediately after the accident and switched the direction to the east. The spreading patterns shown in two SAR images also showed good agreement with in-situ observations.

SAR satellite can acquire clear imagery regardless of weather and the images are widely used for land management, natural hazard monitoring and many other applications. Automatic image matching technique is necessary for management of a huge amount of SAR data. Nevertheless, it is difficult to assure the accuracy of image matching due to the difference of image-capturing attitude and time. In this paper, we compared performances of MI method, FMT method and SIFT method by applying arbitrary displacement and rotation to TerraSAR-X images and changing resolution of the images. As a result, when the features having specific intensity were distributed well in SAR imagery, MI method could assure 0~2 pixels accuracy even if the images were captured in different geometry. But the accuracy of FMT method was significantly poor for the images having different spatial resolutions and the error was represented by tens or hundreds pixels. Moreover, the ratio of corresponding matching points for SIFT method was only 0~17% and it was difficult for SIFT method to apply to SAR images captured in different geometry.
With repeated coverage, spaceborne SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) instruments provide the most efficient means to monitor and study the changes in important elements of the marine environment. Due to highresolution of SAR data, the coverage of SAR sensor is always limited, especially for a repeat cycle. With more SAR sensors from various satellites, new data products such as ocean surface drift can be derived when two SARs' tracks overlap in a short time over coastal areas. Currently, there are two SAR sensors on different satellites with almost the exactly same path. That is, ERS-2 is following ENVISAT with a 30-minutes delay, which will be a good timing for ocean mesosclae feature tracking. For another application, a mystery ship near a big eddy with strong ship wake has been tracked between ERS-2 and ENVISAT SAR images to estimate its ship speed.
Hydrographic data obtained from several ship experiments have shown that internal waves are frequently observed in the East (Japan) Sea, mostly in the continental slopes located along the western side of the East Sea. It is well known that oceanic internal waves can be detected well in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images. Interactions between surface capillary-gravity waves and horizontally varying surface currents induced by internal waves produce variations in sea surface roughness which can be detected by SAR. C-band SAR images from ERS, ENVISAT ASAR and RADARSAT have been used to study the characteristics of internal waves in the East Sea. The observed properties of internal waves from many SAR images were compared and verified from in-situ measurements and theories.
