This paper presents that the comparison results of AT (Active Transponder) positions obtained from different measurements: the result of GPS device and evaluated position from the SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) image, and active transponders can be useful as GCPs(Ground Control Points) in SAR images. The X-band AT are installed on the wide-and-flat area to improve SCR(signal-to-clutter ration), and activated to represent impulse response function in order to operate as one point target in SAR images. Cosmo-SkyMed operating at X-band frequency are used to provide SAR images of AT. The comparison of AT position is performed by using the result of GPS device field measurement and AT SAR images. ENVI-SARscape S/W is used to evaluate AT position in the SAR images. From the comparison, it is shown that AT are useful as GCPs for SAR images.
Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR) is a powerful and well established microwave remote sensing technique which enables high resolution measurement of Earth surface independent of weather conditions and sunlight illumination. KARI has been developing the first Korea SAR satellite which is scheduled to be launched in this year. The SAR satellite mainly consists of the bus platform and SAR payload. Most of all, the RF compatible design during the design phase and the verification of the RF compatibility during the testing phase is very important procedure for the in-orbit performance guarantee because the SAR payload radiates high power through the SAR antenna. In this study, the SAR satellite design criteria and verification procedure for the RF compatibility are described. In addition, this paper describes the RF full radiation testing (RF auto-compatibility testing) for the verification of the RF performance robustness, the testing configuration, and the test results.

SAR(Synthetic Aperture Radar) systems can provide images of wide coverage in day, night, and all-weather conditions. However wideband SAR systems are known to be vulnerable to interferences from other devices operating at in-band or adjacent spectrums and this may lead to image corruptions. In this paper, a SAR point target simulator is developed that provides performance analysis on image distortion caused by interferences from other devices. Interference signals are generated based on the experimental data observed from acquired SAR raw data. Simulation results include typical SAR performance measures such as spatial resolution, peak to sidelobe ratio and integrated sidelobe ratio. Finally, SAR target simulations are performed and shown to correspond to the image corruptions found in real SAR missions affected by RF interferences.
Radar interferometric phase is sensitive to both ground topography and coherent surface displacement. The basic tactics of differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR) technique are to separate the two effects. Applications of DInSAR to Duk-Po area in Busan were studied. In the study area, an abrupt subsidence, possibly caused by sub-way construction, was observed by JERS-1 SAR interferometry. Differential interferograms were generated using twenty-three JERS-1 SAR data acquired between April 24, 1992, and August 7, 1998. Because the area is relatively flat with little topographic relief the topographic effects were not removed. A phase filtering and interferogram techniques were applied to increase fringe clarity as well as to decrease decorrelation error. The stacking improves the quality of interferograms especially when the displacement is discontinuous. The interferograms clearly show the evidence of subsidence along Duk-Po subway railroad. These results demonstrate that the interferogram stacking technique can improve the detectability of radar interferometry to an abrupt displacement and DInSAR is useful to geological engineering applications.

SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) technology, which is not influenced by cloud cover because of using electromagnetic wave of long wavelength, has an advantage in mapping the earth. NASA, recognizing these strong points of SAR, launched SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topography Mission), and acquired the topographic information of the earth. SRTM and NED (National Elevation Data) of USGS were used for the research and vegetation height map was produced through differentiating the two data. Correlation between SRTM-NED and planting year was analyzed to see the relationship. Strong correlation was detected and it shows the feasibility of estimating timber age and eventually creating timber age map from SRTM-NED. Additional analyses were conducted to check if the linearity is influenced by regional characteristics and forest uniformity. As results, the correlation between SRTM-NED and timber age is influenced by roughness of the terrain. Overall, this paper shows that timber age estimation using SRTM and NED can be sufficiently practical.

Future spaceborne satellite synthetic aperture radar(SAR) system is expected to acquire high-resolution images over wide swath areas. Conventional SAR systems suffer from ambiguity problems in both azimuth and range directions that lead to image quality degradation. Recently, multiple input multiple output(MIMO) SAR techniques having multiple orthogonal waveforms are proposed to overcome the conventional ambiguity problems in wide-swath imaging modes. In this paper, noisy orthogonal frequency division multiplex(OFDM) waveforms are developed to reduce the ambiguity problems and suppress the image quality degradation. SAR simulations are performed to evaluate the performance of the proposed technique for wide-swath SAR imaging.

An analysis technique for detecting moving targets on a single-channel airborne frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) technology and synthetic aperture radar (SAR) image is presented. To analyze the relative velocities of moving targets, an FMCW-based signal model for stationary and moving targets was studied, and a SAR ambiguity function considering its signal model was simulated. The relative velocities of the moving targets on a reconstructed SAR image can be estimated by peak searching of the SAR ambiguity function, and the stationary and moving targets are easily distinguished when there is a large variation of the relative velocity. Analysis results of the moving targets on a reconstructed FMCW-SAR image, using practical airborne data and a SAR ambiguity process, are compared with the in situ testing in the study area.
Recently, SAR (Synthetic Aperture Radar) is being highlighted as a solution to the coarse spatial resolution of remote sensing data in water resources research field. Spatial resolution up to 10 m of SAR backscattering coefficient has facilitated more elaborate analyses of the spatial distribution of soil moisture, compared to existing satellite-based coarse resolution (>10 km) soil moisture data. It is essential, however, to multilaterally analyze how various hydrological and environmental factors affect the backscattering coefficient, to utilize the data. In this study, soil moisture estimated by WCM (Water Cloud Model) and linear regression is compared with in-situ soil moisture data at 5 soil moisture observatories in the Korean peninsula. WCM shows suitable estimates for observing instant changes in soil moisture. However, it needs to be adjusted in terms of errors. Soil moisture estimated from linear regression shows a stable error range, but it cannot capture instant changes. The result also shows that the effect of soil moisture on backscattering coefficients differs greatly by land cover, distribution of vegetation, and water content of vegetation, hence that there're still limitations to apply preexisting models directly. Therefore, it is crucial to analyze variable effects from different environments and establish suitable soil moisture model, to apply SAR to water resources fields in Korea.
As the threat of natural disasters such as droughts, floods, forest fires, and landslides increases due to climate change, social demand for high-resolution soil moisture retrieval, such as Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), is also increasing. However, the domestic environment has a high proportion of mountainous topography, making it challenging to retrieve soil moisture from SAR data. This study evaluated the usability of Sentinel-1 SAR, which is applied with the Artificial Neural Network (ANN) technique, to retrieve soil moisture. It was confirmed that the backscattering coefficient obtained from Sentinel-1 significantly correlated with soil moisture behavior, and the possibility of stand-alone use to correct vegetation effects without using auxiliary data observed from other satellites or observatories. However, there was a large difference in the characteristics of each site and topographic group. In particular, when the model learned on the mountain and at flat land cross-applied, the soil moisture could not be properly simulated. In addition, when the number of learning points was increased to solve this problem, the soil moisture retrieval model was smoothed. As a result, the overall correlation coefficient of all sites improved, but errors at individual sites gradually increased. Therefore, systematic research must be conducted in order to widely apply high-resolution SAR soil moisture data. It is expected that it can be effectively used in various fields if the scope of learning sites and application targets are specifically limited.
