  • The SAP(salt-and-pepper) noise changes the pixel value to the maximum and minimum values of the dynamic region of the pixel. For this reason, unlike white Gaussian noise, SAP noise can predict the ratio of noise relatively easily. Because the condition of the neighboring pixels that can be referenced changes according to the noise ratio, it is necessary to apply different noise reduction methods according to the noise ratio. This paper proposes an adaptive switching filtering algorithm which can eliminates the SAP noise. It consists of two phases. It first detects the location of the SAP noise and calculates the noise ratio. After that, the image is reconstructed using different methods depending on which of the three sections the calculated noise ratio belongs to. As a result of the experiment, the proposed method showed superior objective and subjective image quality compared to the previous methods such as MF, AFSWMF, NAMF and RWMF.

  • Salt and pepper is a type of impulse noise. It may appear due to an error in the image transmission process and image storage memory. This noise changes the pixel value at any position in the image to 0 (in case of pepper noise) or 255 (in case of salt noise). In this paper, we present an algorithm for SAP noise reduction. The proposed method consists of three steps. In the first step, the location of the SAP noise is detected, and in the second step, the pixel value of the detected location is restored using a weighted average of the surrounding pixel values. In the last step, a reliability matrix around the reconstructed pixels is constructed, and additional correction is performed with a weighted average using this. As a result of the experiment, the proposed method appears to have similar or higher objective and subjective image quality than previous methods for almost all SAP noise ratios.

  • Because salt and pepper noise is a type of impulse, even a small amount of noise could cause a large image degradation. In this paper, we proposed a salt-and-pepper noise removal method using the convolutional neural network. It consists of four phases. In the first step, the proposed method reconstructs noisy image using a traditional salt-and-pepper noise reduction method, and in the second step, the result image of previous step is filtered with Gaussian low pass filter. After that, we reconstruct the filtered image using convolution neural network. In the last step, the pixels with salt-and-pepper noise are replaced with the result of previous phase. Simulation results show that the proposed method yields not only objective image qualities(PSNR, SSIM) but also subjective image qualities for all SAP noise ratios.

  • In this paper, we propose a efficient noise power estimation technique for an integrated acoustic echo and noise suppression system in a frequency domain. The proposed method uses speech absence probability (SAP) derived from the microphone input signal as the smoothing parameter updating noise power to reduce the noise power estimation error resulted from the distortions in the unified structure where the noise suppression (NS) operation is placed after the acoustic echo suppression (AES) algorithm. Therefore, in the proposed approach, the smoothing parameter based on SAP derived from the input signal instead of echo-suppressed signal should stop updating noise power estimates during the distorted noise spectrum periods. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated by the objective test under various environments and yields better results compared with the conventional scheme.

  • This paper presents a new approach to noise estimation to improve speech enhancement in non-stationary noisy environments. The proposed method combines the two separate noise power estimates provided by the minimum statistics (MS) for speech presence and soft decision (SD) for speech absence in accordance with SAP (Speech Absence Probability) on a separate frequency bin. The performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated by the subjective test under various noise environments and yields better results compared with the conventional MS or SD-based schemes.

  • This paper analyzes the performance of various single channel speech enhancement algorithms when they are applied to automatic speech recognition (ASR) systems as a preprocessor. The functional modules of speech enhancement systems are first divided into four major modules such as a gain estimator, a noise power spectrum estimator, a priori signal to noise ratio (SNR) estimator, and a speech absence probability (SAP) estimator. We investigate the relationship between speech recognition accuracy and the roles of each module. Simulation results show that the Wiener filter outperforms other gain functions such as minimum mean square error-short time spectral amplitude (MMSE-STSA) and minimum mean square error-log spectral amplitude (MMSE-LSA) estimators when a perfect noise estimator is applied. When the performance of the noise estimator degrades, however, MMSE methods including the decision directed module to estimate a priori SNR and the SAP estimation module helps to improve the performance of the enhancement algorithm for speech recognition systems.

  • This paper proposes a new noise-biased compensation of minimum statistics(MS) method using a nonlinear function and a priori speech absence probability(SAP) for speech enhancement in non-stationary noisy environments. The minimum statistics(MS) method is well known technique for noise power estimation in non-stationary noisy environments. It tends to bias the noise estimate below that of true noise level. The proposed method is combined with an adaptive parameter based on a sigmoid function and a priori speech absence probability (SAP) for biased compensation. Specifically. we apply the adaptive parameter according to the a posteriori SNR. In addition, when the a priori SAP equals unity, the adaptive biased compensation factor separately increases ${\delta}_{max}$ each frequency bin, and vice versa. We evaluate the estimation of noise power capability in highly non-stationary and various noise environments, the improvement in the segmental signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), and the Itakura-Saito Distortion Measure (ISDM) integrated into a spectral subtraction (SS). The results shows that our proposed method is superior to the conventional MS approach.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel speech enhancement algorithm for effective noise suppression in various noisy environments. In the proposed method, to result in improved decision performance for speech and noise segments, local speech absence probability (LSAP, local SAP) based on Teager energy of noisy speech is used as the feature parameter for voice activity detection (VAD) in each frequency subband instead of conventional LSAP. In addition, The presented method utilizes global SAP (GSAP) derived in each frame as the weighting parameter for the modification of the adopted TE operator to improve the performance of TE operator. Performances of the proposed algorithm are evaluated by objective test under various environments and better results compared with the conventional methods are obtained.

  • In ultra dense networks (UDNs), macro user equipments (MUEs) have significant interference from small-cell access points (SAPs) since a number of SAPs are deployed in the coverage of macro base stations of 5G mobile communication systems. In this paper, we propose a dynamic channel assignment scheme to increase the performance of MUEs for the uplink of UDNs even though the number of SAPs is increased. The target of the proposed dynamic channel assignment scheme is that the signal-to-interference and noise ratio (SINR) of MUEs is above a given SINR threshold assigning different subchannels to SUEs from those of MUEs. Simulation results show that the proposed dynamic channel assignment scheme outperforms others in terms of the mean MUE capacity even though the mean SUE capacity is decreased a little lower.

  • In this paper, we propose a robust speech reinforcement technique to enhance the intelligibility of the degraded speech signal under the ambient noise environments based on soft decision scheme incorporating a speech absence probability (SAP) with speech reinforcement gains. Since the ambient noise significantly decreases the intelligibility of the speech signal, the speech reinforcement approach to amplify the estimated clean speech signal from the background noise environments for improving the intelligibility and clarity of the corrupted speech signal was proposed. In order to estimate the robust reinforcement gain rather than the conventional speech reinforcement method between speech active periods and nonspeech periods or transient intervals, we propose the speech reinforcement algorithm based on soft decision applying the SAP to the estimation of speech reinforcement gains. The performances of the proposed algorithm are evaluated by the Comparison Category Rating (CCR) of the measurement for subjective determination of transmission quality in ITU-T P.800 under various ambient noise environments and show better performances compared with the conventional method.
