  • Eco-friendly concrete contains only 5% of cement yet achieves equal or greater strength compared to conventional concrete, reducing salt-attack impact and hydration heat by more than 30% and ensuring higher construction quality for underground structures. Furthermore, eco-friendly concrete can reduce up to 90% of carbon dioxide emissions compared to traditional concrete, enabling a reduction of approximately 6,000 tons of carbon emissions for 1,000 of apartment units construction.   • MTT (3-(4, 5-dimethyl thiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) reduction assay is a method that validates the viability of an active cell. Dehydrogenase in mitochondria converts yellow colored insoluble tetrazolium salt to purple colored water-soluble formazan. Sperm also have mitochondria in the midpiece, therefore sperm viability could be evaluated by MTT reduction assay. Several studies have already demonstrated the capability of application of the MTT reduction assay to sperm of several species in Hepes-BSA buffer. Because most liquid semen was diluted in extender like BTS (Beltsville Thawing Solution), Modena or Androhep when it is used or transferred, semen needed another dilution in Hepes-BSA buffer to assess sperm viability. In this study, we evaluated boar sperm viability especially in BTS extended semen and compared the efficiency of this test with eosin-nigrosin staining. We used the fresh BTS extended semen from a local A.I center. Semen sample was diluted to $3.0{\times}10^7$ sperms/ml in BTS. The rates of formazan production were measured in 96-well microtiter plates immediately and 1h after incubation at $17^{\circ}C$ using a spectrophotometer at wave length 560 nm. Simultaneously, split samples of the same semen were tested, using eosin-nigrosin staining to compare the efficiency of the MTT assay of sperm viability in BTS. The correlation between the results of these tests was calculated using Student-t test and ANOVA. The results revealed a strong correlation between the results of MTT reduction rate and the results that were simultaneously determined by eosin-nigrosin staining at 1 h. In conclusion, the MTT reduction test was an effective and simple method to validate sperm viability and it could be used as a simple tool to evaluate sperm viability in the local A.I center and laboratory.

CaCl2 용융염에서 TiO2 펠렛의 전기화학적 환원반응 특성 (An Electrochemical Reduction of TiO2 Pellet in Molten Calcium Chloride)

  • 본 연구에서는 $850^{\circ}C$$CaCl_2$ 용융염계에서 전해환원공정을 통해 $TiO_2$로부터 금속티타늄을 제조하였다. Ni-$TiO_2$ 조합전극을 환원전극으로 그라파이트를 산화전극으로 사용하였으며, 셀전위를 제어하면서 $TiO_2$의 전해환원 특성을 관찰하였다. XRD 분석을 통해 $TiO_2$$CaTiO_3$, $Ti_2O$, $Ti_6O$와 같은 다양한 반응 중간생성물을 거쳐 Ti 스폰지로 환원되는 것이 밝혀졌다. 또한 SEM 분석을 통해 $TiO_2$ 전해환원 반응동안 펠렛의 바깥표면부터 환원반응이 시작되어 펠렛중심으로 진행이 되는 것이 확인되었다. 전해환원 반응도중 환원된 티타늄금속은 초기에는 다공성 스폰지 구조를 보이나 고온에서 반응이 진행됨에 따라 점차 소결에 의해 수축되어 다공성 구조가 사라지는 현상을 보였다.

역삼투막 표면에 음이온 고분자 코팅을 통한 파울링 현상 감소연구 (Study on the Fouling Reduction of the RO Membrane by the Coating with an Anionic Polymer)

  • 폴리아마이드 역삼투막 표면에 음이온 수용성 고분자인 poly(vinyl amine)(PVAm)을 코팅한 후 오염물질인 bovine serum albumin (BSA), humic acid (HA), sodium alginate (SA)에 대하여 파울링 개선효과가 있는지를 알아보고자 하였다. PVAm의 코팅과 파울링 여부는 scanning electron microscopy (SEM)을 통해 관찰하였다. BSA, HA, SA 100 ppm 공급원액을 이용하여 2, 4, 8 bar로 압력을 변화시켜 투과성능실험을 수행한 결과 PVAm으로 코팅되지 않은 막과 코팅된 막 모두 압력증가에 따라 파울링 현상이 심화되었으나 PVAm으로 코팅된 막이 BSA, HA, SA의 경우 모두에서 약 30%이상 투과도가 향상되어 파울링 개선효과가 나타나는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. HA > SA > BSA의 순으로 파울링 개선효과가 나타났으며 HA의 경우 가장 두드러지게 나타났다.

Expression of Arabidopsis thaliana SIK (Stress Inducible Kinase) Gene in a Potato Cultivar (Solanum tuberosum L. 'Taedong Valley')

  • Osmotic stress is one of major limiting factors in crop production. In particular, seasonal drought often causes the secondary disease in the field, resulting in severe reduction in both quality and productivity. Recent efforts have revealed that many genes encoding protein kinases play important roles in osmotic stress signal transduction pathways. Previously, the AtSIK (Arabidopsis thaliana Stress Inducible Kinase) mutants have shown to enhance tolerance to abiotic stresses, accompanying with higher expression of abiotic stress-related genes than did the wild-type plants. In this study, we have transformed potato (cv. Taedong Valley) with the AtSIK expression cassette. Both PCR and RT-PCR using AtSIK-specific primers showed stable integration and expression of the AtSIK gene in individual transgenic lines, respectively. Foliar application of herbicide ($Basta^{(R)}$) at commercial application rate (0.3% (v/v)) revealed another evidence of stable gene introduction of T-DNA which includes the bar gene for herbicide resistance. Overexpression of the AtSIK gene under dual CaMV35S promoter increased sensitivity to salt stress (300 mM NaCl), which was demonstrated by the reduction rate of chlorophyll contents in leaves of transgenic potato lines. These results suggest that possible increase of osmotic tolerance in potato plants may be achieved by antisense expression of AtSIK gene.

임펄스 잡음 환경에서 영상복원 필터에 관한 연구 (A Study on Image Restoration Filter in Impulse Noise Environments)

  • 사회가 고도의 디지털 정보화 시대로 발전함에 따라 영상복원 등 디지털 영상처리 기술분야에 관한 많은 연구가 진행되고 있다. 임펄스 잡음에 훼손된 영상을 복원하는 대표적인 방법은 SM(standard median)필터, CWM(center weighed median)필터 등이 있지만, 이들은 잡음밀도가 낮은 영역에서는 우수한 잡음 제거 특성을 나타내고, 잡음밀도가 높은 영역에서는 잡음제거 특성이 미흡하다. 본 논문에서는 임펄스(Salt & Pepper) 잡음 환경에서 훼손된 영상을 복원하기 위해 훼손된 화소를 중심으로 하여 마스크를 확장 세분화하여 처리하는 영상복원 필터 알고리즘을 제안하였다. 그리고 제안한 알고리즘의 우수성을 입증하기 위해 PSNR(peak signal to noise ratio)을 판단의 기준으로 사용하였다.

SK85 고탄소강의 구상화 거동 (Spheroidization Behavior of SK85 High Carbon Steel)

  • In the present study, the effect of initial microstructure, cold reduction ratio, and annealing temperature on the spherodization rate of SK85 high carbon steel sheet was investigated. High carbon steel sheet fabricated by POSCO was soaked at $800^{\circ}C$ for 2 hr in a box furnace and then treated at $570^{\circ}C$ for 5 min in a salt bath furnace followed by water quenching to obtain a fine pearlite structure. Cold rolling was conducted on the sheets of fine pearlite by reduction ratios of 20, 30, and 40% and heat treatment for spheroidization was carried out at 600 and $720^{\circ}C$ for the various time intervals from 0.1 to 32 hrs. Area fraction of spheroidized cementite was measured with an image analyzer as a function of cold reduction ratios and duration times.

The Reduction of Np(VI) by Acetohydroxamic Acid in Nitric Acid Solution

  • Spent nuclear fuel is reprocessed commercially by the chemical process to recover U and Pu. Recently, new salt-free reagents to separate plutonium and neptunium from uranium suitable for use in a single cycle flowsheet have been developed. Acetohydroxamic acid $(CH_3CONHOH)$ has been taken much interest in as a complexing agent capable of selective stripping of tetravalent actinides from U(VI) when actinides are present in the solvent stream of the advanced PUREX process. Additionally acetohydroxamic acid will rapidly reduce Np(VI) to inextractable Np(V) thus allowing the separation of Np from U. In this study, the rate equation for the reduction of Np(VI) to Np(V) in nitric acid aqueous solution has been determined as: $-[NpO_2^{2+}]$/dt = $k[NpO_2^{2+}]$[AHA] with k = 191.2 ${\pm}$ 11.2 $M^{-1}s^{-1}$ at 25 ${\pm}$ 0.5 ${^{\circ}C}$ and $[HNO_3]$ = 1.0 M. Comparison with other reductants available in the literature, acetohydroxamic acid is a strong one for $NpO_2^{2+}$.

석류색소의 면섬유에 대한 염색성과 항균성 (Dyeing properties of cotton fabric with pomegranate colorants and antimicrobial properties)

  • Dyeing properties of the colorants extracted from pomegranate hull on cotton fabric were investigated. Effects of dyeing conditions and mordanting on dye uptake, color change and colorfastness were explored. Cationic agent treatment was done for cotton to improve low dyeability in natural dyeing. In addition antimicrobial activity of the cotton fabrics dyed with pomegranate colorants was examined by the shake flask method. Pomegranate colorants showed low affinity to cotton fiber and its adsorption isotherm was Freundlich type. Therefore, hydrogen bonding was involved in the adsorption of pomegranate colorants onto cotton fiber. Mordants did not significantly increase dye adsorption. Pomegranate colorants produced mainly yellow color on cotton fabric. In order to improve dye uptake, cotton was cationized by treating with Cationon UK(quarterly ammonium salt) and chitosan. The cationized cotton with Cationon UK showed higher dye uptake and shorter dyeing time, compared with the untreated cotton. Chitosan treated cotton also showed high dye uptake, but chitosan was less effective compared with Cationon UK. Fastness to washing, perspiration, and rubbing was not improved by mordanting and cationizing treatment, but light fastness was increased by all mordants and cationic agent. As dye concentration increased, bacterial reduction rate was increased and mordants did not significantly increase bacterial reduction rate.

Development of a Mass Transfer Model and Its Application to the Behavior of the Cs, Sr, Ba, and Oxygen ions in an Electrolytic Reduction Process for SF

  • Isotopes of alkali and alkaline earth metals (AM and AEM) are the main contributors to the heat load and the radiotoxicity of spent fuel (SF) . These components are separated from the SF and dissolved in a molten LiCl in an electrolytic reduction process. A mass transfer model is developed to describe the diffusion behavior of Cs, Sr, and Ba in the SF into the molten salt. The model is an analytical solution of Fick's second law of diffusion for a cylinder which is the shape of a cathode in the electrolytic reduction process. And the model is also applied to depict the concentration profile of the oxygen ion which is produced by the electrolysis of Li$_{2}$O. The regressed diffusion coefficients of the model correlating the experimentally measured data are evaluated to be greater in the order of Ba, Cs, and Sr for the metal ions and the diffusion of the oxygen ion is slower than the metal ions which implies that different mechanisms govern the diffusion of the metal ions and the oxygen ions in a molten LiCl.
