  • Kaula's theory of satellite orbit and Kepler's law are re-visited. All the mathematical steps of derivation are thoroughly shown including the ones, which had been omitted in Kaula's original publication. Particularly in evaluations of the 15 independent Lagrange brackets, simplicity and clarity are attained by using orthogonal property of transformation matrix. Explanations of important physical concepts are included as well in the midway of derivation. One conceptual blunder of Kaula's is corrected.

  • In this paper, the implementation of location based services (LBS) using S-DMB (satellite-digital multimedia broadcasting) system was proposed. In S-DMB System, the frequency of transmitted signal is about 2 GHz which has a characteristics of strong straightness but weak diffraction so that there are many shade areas such as indoors and underground spaces. Therefore the signal transmitted from the satellite should be retransmitted by the earth repeaters called as gap filler. Because each gap filler has its own identification value, the gap filler ID introduces the area in which the gap filler was installed. Generally, the 51st data symbols of S-DMB pilot signal transmitted from the satellite are padded by dummy value and gap filler ID is embedded in this pilot symbol by the gap filler when S-DMB signals are retransmitted by gap fillers. So using gap filler ID of S-DMB system, LBS such as region registration, distance and time to destination, alarm of local area information could be implemented. In the experiment to prove the performance of the proposed LBS system using the gap filler ID of the S-DMB system, the firmware of S-DMB chip composing of RF and baseband parts was lightly modified so that application processor was able to manipulate the gap filler ID and the its related regional information.

  • The present article proposes a new droplet collision model including the stretching separation regime and the formation of satellite droplets. The new model consists of several equations to calculate the post-collision characteristics of colliding droplets and satellite droplets. These equations are derived from the energy balance of droplets between before and after collision. For binary collision of water droplets, the new model shows good agreement with experimental data far the number of satellite droplets.

  • This paper analyzes the characteristics of abnormal broadcast GPS ephemeris by comparing distances between the receiver and the satellites. Effects of abnormal ephemeris on receiver's position estimate are closely related with range errors caused by variations of satellite positions. In more detail each range error depends on the satellite position error and the line of sight vector. Based on the fact, the ephemeris parameters are classified into three types depending on the size, the shape, and the shape of the satellite orbit to analyze the fault characteristics. The effects of satellite position errors caused by the three type s of parameters on the receiver's position estimate are analyze d in detail.

  • Most civilian positioning systems in use are based on the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), which receives signals from satellites and calculates the current location. After the successful establishment of GPS from the U.S., GNSS has led to promote satellite navigation systems in various countries. Recently, China has succeeded in the radical development of its own GNSS, the BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS), based on its advanced IT technology and funding power. Considering that China is rapidly expanding the service area of BDS to the world, systematic research on BDS is also required in Korea. Therefore, this paper provides overall information on B1C, the open signal of BDS, so that this information can be utilized in the design of B1C signal system and BDS B1C receiver design.

  • This paper analyzes the impact of the satellite TWTA non-linearity charateristics for shared band transmission technology to improve spectral efficiency in satellite communication system. In shared band transmission technology for star network, a hub and terminals use same frequency band. In order to receive terminals's signal a hub have to remove the its own DVB-S2 carrier. In this paper the non-linearity impact of satellite TWTA is analyzed for self-interference cancellation.

  • Recommendation ITU-R S.1062 specifies the performance of digital satellite systems. The performance objectives were given in terms of bit error probability divided by the average number of errors per burst versus percentage of time. This performance objective is highly dependent on the forward error correction(FEC) coding schemes used in the system. This implies that we need an effective way of estimating the error performance of a system by the given FEC scheme. In this paper, we derive theoretical formula to estimate performance measure of digital satellite systems defined in Recommendation ITU-R S.1062. We demonstrate various estimation results, and verify them by comparing to the simulation results.

  • The Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite (GOES) 9, which is currently located at 155°E geostationary orbits, has transmitted earth observation data acquired by imager to CDA at NOAA. After the acquisition on ground, observation data are corrected on ground and re-transmitted to GOES-9 for the dissemination to users. In this paper, the procedure and result from raw data acquisition and pre-processing for earth observation imagery retrieval from GOES-9 Raw data acquired in Korea at May 2005 are introduced.

  • This objective of this study is an effort to predict atomic oxygen (ATOX) erosion as ot affects coating material(s) of LEO satellite's solar array by implementing the 'real ram direction accumulation method'. We observed the difference of ATOX Fluence between the previous 'Maximum worst case estimation method' and 'Real ram direction accumulation method' and we plan to implement these findings for the purpose of evaluating the level of compliance for design submitted by solar array suppliers. We used the SPENVIS(Space Environment Information System) served by ESA based on assumption orbit information, and applied the satellite orbit calculation software for calculating the ATOX Flux crushed solar array in real orbit surface.
