The shear wave velocity is related with the stiffness of granular skeleton and mass density. The shear stiffness of the granular skeleton remains unaffected by the presence of the fluid. Bender elements are convenient shear wave transducers for instrumenting soil cells due to optimal soil-transducer coupling. This study addresses the principles of the shear wave, the design and implementation of bender elements including electromagnetic coupling prevention, directivity, resonant frequency, detection of first arrival, and near field effects. It is shown that electromagnetic coupling effects can be minimized using parallel-type bender elements. Thus, the in-plane S-wave directivity is quasi-circular. The resonant frequency of bender element installations depends on the geometry of the bender element, the anchor efficiency and the soil stiffness. One of the most cumbersome parts in the bender element test is near field effects, which affect the selection of arrival time. The selection of the first arrival within the near field Is effectively solved by the multiple reflection technique and signal matching technique. Bender elements, which requires several considerations, may be effective tools for the subsurface characterization by using S-wave.
A numerical model for multiple reflection effects of a polarized beam on laser grooving has been developed. The surface of the treated material is assumed to reflect laser irradiation in a fully specular fashion. Combining electromagnetic wave theory with Fresnel's relation, the reflective behavior of a groove surface can be obtained as well as the change of the polarization status in the reflected wave field. The material surface is divided into a number of rectangular patches using a bicubic surface representation method. The net radiative flux far these patch elements is obtained by standard ray tracing methods. The changing state of polarization of the electric field after reflection was included in the ray tracing method. The resulting radiative flux is combined with a set of three-dimensional conduction equations governing conduction losses into the medium, and the resulting groove shape and depth are found through iterative procedures. It is observed that reflections of a polarized beam play an important role not only in increasing the material removal rate but also in forming different final groove shapes. Comparison with available experimental results for silicon nitride shows good agreement for the qualitative trends of the dependence of groove shapes on the electric field vector orientation.
A new method to model the HRTF's(Head-Related Transfer Function), which could give improvement of the sound localization accuracy using the spatial effects by the reflected sound wave transfer characteristics, is proposed. When using the HRTF model having reflected sound wave transfer characteristics, the accuracy of sound localization was quite improved up to about 23%, compared with using the direct wave transfer characteristics only. Furthermore, it is verified that the spatial impression could be a factor to enhance the ability of sound localization.
Generally, it is pointed out that a nonlinear analysis is needed to estimate accurately the water surface fluctuation and dynamic responses of a floating structure in case of large wave reflection. In this study, a frequency-domain method is applied and newly developed to analyze the nonlinear characteristics of the air-chamber floating breakwater. The air-chamber floating breakwater in this study can control well the wave transformation, motions of the structure and its natural frequency by adjusting the air depth in the chamber. Experiments are carried out to verify the numerical results. It is appeared that the mean water level is setup in the anti-node and setdown in the node, while the nonlinearity in wave profile is larger in the node than in the anti-node. Because of vertical mooring system, the sway, especially the time-independent nonlinear component, plays predominant role in the motion. On the other hand, the time-dependent component, as well as the time-independent one to the tensile force of mooring line contributes greatly, and the time averaged value presents tensional force oriented to the onshore side due drift force.

A comparison of the antenna parameters for R-band (1.7-2.6 GHz) and S-band (2.6-3.95 GHz) standard gain horn antennas has been performed by the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS), together with seven domestic participants from private companies and public institutions. Its purpose, as a proficiency test program of the 'Antenna Measurement Club' of KRISS, was to check equivalences in antenna parameter measurements between KRISS and the participants, particularly in the R-/S-band, to support antenna manufacturers and end users in Korea. The measurement parameters of this comparison are the power gain, radiation pattern, and reflection coefficient of the traveling standards for R-/S-band pyramidal standard gain horn antennas. The comparison used a gain comparison method and an extrapolation method to measure the power gain of the two traveling standards; the radiation patterns were measured in the far-field region of the transmitting and receiving antennas.

An analytical method is developed to study the propagation of surface waves across infilled trenches. The Green's function technique is used to estimate the reflection and transmission coefficients of Rayleigh waves across a semi-infinite plate inserted between two homogeneous quarter-spaces. After validating the method against experimental data, influence of the material contrast and the angle of incidence on the screening effectiveness of an infilled trench is examined.

The performance of wave control by a surface-mounted horizontal membrane is analyzed in the frame of linear potential theory. To employ the eigenfunction expansion method, the fluid domain is divided into two regions i.e. region without membrane and membrane-covered region. By matching the each solutions at boundaries of adjacent regions, the complete solution is obtained. The present analytical method solving the scattering problem directly gives the same results as Cho and Kim(1998)'s method solving the diffraction and the radiation problem separately. To verify the developed model, the model test with a surface-mounted horizontal membrane is conducted at the wave tank(36m${\times}$0.91m${\times}$l.22m). The analytic results are in good agreement with the experimental results. The reflection and transmission coefficients are investigated according to the change of membrane tension, length and incident frequencies.

The hybrid numerical model is developed by combining BEM that can calculate the wave motion rapidly under the potential theory and CADMAS-SURF that solves Navier-Stokes equations for the free surface variation near the structure, In the hybrid model the calculation of wave motion in a wide field of wave reflection for deep water area is conducted by BEM but for shallow water area by CADMAS-SURF. Especially the hybrid model can calculate random wave motions for long term period more rapidly with almost similar accuracy than the calculation of wave motion which was carried out by CADMAS-SURF only. In this study the coupling model was applied to the calculation of the strong nonlinear wave motion such as wave runup and overtopping at the coastal structure on the mild-slope bottom and the results of numerical model were compared with the Toyosima's experiments of regular wave runup and Goda's design diagram of ramdom wave overtopping, respectively.
The majority of existing WECs (wave energy converters) are designed to achieve maximum power at a resonance condition. In the case of a single WEC, its size must be large enough for tuning, and it has high efficiency only within a limited frequency band. Recently, wave power extraction by deploying many small buoys in a compact array has been studied under the assumption that the buoy's size and separation distance are much smaller than the water depth, wave length, and size of the array. A boundary value problem involving the macro-scale boundary condition on the mean surface covered by an infinite strip of buoys is solved using the eigenfunction expansion method. The energy extraction efficiency (${\varepsilon}=1-R^2_f-T^2_r$), where $R_f$ and $T_r$ are the reflection and transmission coefficients for a strip array of buoys, is assessed for various combinations of packing ratio, strip width, and PTO damping coefficient.

RCS effects of long-crested wave surfaces to marine targets are numerically analyzed using a 4-path model and a direct analysis method, developed based on physical optics and a combined method of physical optics/geometric optics, respectively. Reflectivity of long-crested wave surfaces is described with 'Fresnel reflection coefficients' The MPM(modified Pierson-Moskowitz) ocean spectrum is adopted to simulate long-crested waves in the direct analysis method. A numerical analysis of a benchmark model assures the validity of both methods. The direct analysis method is applied to the RCS calculation of electromagnetically large marine targets, which are vertically oriented or slanted to the long crested wave surfaces randomly generated with various significant wave heights. The long-crested wave surface much highly increases the RCS of the marine target, but those effects are decreased as the significant wave height grows up. At low elevation angle, the vertical model has entirely high RCS comparing slanted model, and the RCS of vertical flat plate is the highest on the calm sea surface, while those of slanted flat plates are the lowest on the calm sea surface. The RCS of marine targets on continuously-varying sea surface is more coherent at lower elevation angles, as well.
