  • This paper presents a novel method for modeling elastic wave propagation in long beams. The proposed method derives a solution for the transient transverse displacement of the beam's neutral axis without assuming the separation of variables (SV). By mapping the governing equation from the space domain to the frequency domain using Fourier transformation (FT), the transverse displacement function is determined as a convolution integral of external loading functions and a combination of trigonometric and Fresnel functions. This method determines the beam's response to general loading conditions as a linear combination of the analytical response of a beam subjected to an abrupt localized loading. The proposed solution method is verified through finite element analysis (FEA) and wave propagation patterns are derived for tone burst loading with specific frequency contents. The results demonstrate that the proposed solution method accurately models wave dispersion, reduces computational cost, and yields accurate results even for high-frequency loading.

  • $Pb/Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+\delta}$-single-crystal junctions with the tunneling direction along the c axis of the crystal were fabricated to obtain an s-wave-superconductor/d-wave-superconductor Josephson junctions. The tunneling R (T) curves and current-voltage characteristics show distinct features which can be explained only under the assumption that the order parameter of high-$T_c/Bi_2Sr_2CaCu_2O_{8+{\delta}}$ superconductors has a pure d-wave symmetry, which is in contrast to the case of $YBa_2Cu_3O_{7+{\delta$}}$erconductors where a minor s-wave component is also present..

  • In this study, a finite-element surface wave simulation using an effective elastic constant (EEC) was developed to calculate the Rayleigh wave velocity change and polarization change in aluminum, steel, and concrete under uniaxial stress. Under stress, an isotropic medium behaves like an anisotropic material during the wave propagation. The EEC is an equivalent anisotropic stiffness matrix which was derived to simulate the acoustoelastic effect using classical finite-element software. The vertical and horizontal surface displacements located 8-mm from a 1-㎲ excitation load were used to find the acoustoelastic coefficients kv and kp and compared to an analytical scheme. It was found that kv for aluminum and concrete matched within 4% of the analytical solution. The finite-element simulation showed that the Rayleigh wave arrival time for concrete and aluminum was greatly influenced by the stress level. Thus, predicting the stress level using concrete and aluminum's acoustoelastic effect is applicable.

  • Korea Ocean Research and Development Institute performed the basic design of the Ear-Do Ocean Research Station in 1998. The design wave was taken to be the deep water wave which was obtained through wave hindcasting procedure. Wave forces acting on the structure were calculated by Morison formula utilizing the stream function theory of 5th. order. In the present study, a three dimensional hydraulic model testing was undertaken to investigate the validity of the basic design, measuring wave propagation over the Ear-Do, horizontal wave forces and air gaps. The measured forces were all compared by the corresponding values calculated by SACS program based on th design on the design wave. The results showed that in the three deep water wave directions (SSW, S, SE) the measured wave farces appeared less than the SACS calculated. But in the NNW wave direction, the measured forces generally exceeded the calculated values and showed a peculiar pattern very similar to the case that waves are superimposed by an unidirectional current. It was also found that the measured air gap underneath the structure appeared less than the values taken in the basic design for all wave directions.

  • The effect of wave and current interactions on irregular wave transformation over a submerged elliptic shoal is investigated based on numerical simulations of the Vincent and Briggs experiment [Vincent, C.L., Briggs, M.J., 1989. Refraction-diffraction of irregular waves over a mound. Journal of Waterway, Port, Coastal and Ocean Engineering, 115(2), pp. 269-284]. The numerical simulations are conducted by a combination of REF/DIF S(a wave model) and SHORECIRC(a current model) and a time dependent phase-resolving wavecurrent model, FUNWAVE. In the simulations, the breaking-induced currents defocus waves behind the shoal and bring on a wave shadow zone that shows relatively low wave height distributions. The computed results of the combined model system agree better with the measurements than the computed results obtained by neglecting wave-current interaction do. In addition, the results of FUNWAVE show a good agreement with the measurements. The agreement indicates that it is necessary to take into account the effect of breaking-induced current on wave refraction when wave-breaking occurs over a submerged shoal.

  • This study defines Korean wave stars as Korean wave human brands and examines the influence of the characteristics, attachment, and self-congruity of the Korean wave human brand on brand equity. For this, this study surveyed Chinese female consumers in their 20s and 30s who consume many Korean wave products from May 2018 to June 2018. First, human brand characteristics, attachment, self-congruity, Korean wave aspiration level, and brand equity according to demographic characteristics were identified. Second, characteristics, attachment, self-congruity, and the aspiration level of the Korean wave human brand showed correlations with brand equity. However, brand awareness, a sub-factor of brand equity, does not show correlations with self-congruity. Third, characteristics, attachment, self-congruity, and Korean wave aspiration level had a positively influenced brand equity. Fourth, when looking into the mediated effect of attachment on brand equity, both human brand characteristics and self-congruity showed a partially mediated effect. Fifth, when analyzing the adjustment effect in the Korean wave aspiration level, a group with higher Korean wave aspiration level showed more correlations with attachment and brand equity. This study found that attachment and self congruity are important elements in forming human brand and brand equity. This study is significant in that it verified the influence of Korean wave brand power that has been on the rise recently on brand equity and provided a theoretical basis that has allowed researchers to determine that the characteristics, attachment, and self-congruity of Korean wave human brand significantly influence brand equity.

  • Immersion ultrasonic testing (UT) was used to determine elastic moduli of solid materials instead of the widely-used contact UT method. Conventionally, immersion UT is only used for determining the longitudinal wave speed. However, in this research, transverse wave speed was measured through finding transverse wave echoes caused by mode-conversion at material's boundary. Also, even in the cases when wave speeds could not be determined due to unknown thickness, Poisson's ratio was able to be calculated from the ratio of longitudinal and transverse wave speeds. This technique was verified for several materials, and it was found that higher accuracy was obtained by immersion UT method for materials either with relatively high wave speed or with relatively small Poisson's ratio. This technique thus will be suitable fur ceramics or high strength materials.

  • Time seres of suspended sediment concentration, surface elevation and velocity were measured and analysed to investigate the role of waves and the predominance of infra-gravity wave component for sediment suspension phenomena in the surf zone. For the investigation in detail, we adopted the cross spectral analysis method between sediment concentration and the characteristic values of wave, and ensemble average analysis method about long-period wave component, which is dominant to sediment suspension in the measurement point. The obtained results are summarized as follows: 1) The relationship between sediment concentration and the characteristic values of wave is stronger for the long-period standing wave components(about 60s and 30s) than the long wave components(about 100s), which have the most energetic power, 2) and also, it is cleared that sediment concentration is increased in the case of the phase, the velocity components of the first mode long-period standing wave(60sec) were accelerated toward on-shore direction, that is, the water surface in offshore side is higher than on-shore side.

  • In this paper time series wave data are simulated using wave spectrum with random phases of the wave signal. The simulated wave signals are used to study the effect of the sampling rate on the ocean wave characteristics. Effect of sampling rate on wave data which include extreme wave such as freak waves are examined and various wave characteristics including abnormality index (AI), kurtosis of wave profile and maximum wave height are examined. Various wave heights are decreased as the sampling rate decreases. The zero-th moment of the wave spectrum does not affect much on the sampling rate but the second moment are greately affected on the sampling rate. The error due to the sampling rate is decreases as the wave period increases. The error in significant wave height based on the wave spectrum $H_s$ is smaller than that on the time domain method $H_{1/3}$. AI index and kurtosis of wave profile do not deviate much from the exact date as long as the sampling rate is greater than 1 Hz. Ocean wave measurement with the sampling frequency higher than 1 Hz will result the error less than 5% in estimating the height of extreme waves.

  • This paper discusses the influence on long-tenn predictions of the ship response in ocean by using the Global Wave Statistics data, GWS, and wave information from the remote sensing satellites. GWS's standard scatter diagrams of significant wave height and zero-crossing wave period are suggested to be corrected to a round number of 0.01/1000 fitted with a statistical analytic model of the conditional lognormal distribution for zero-crossing wave period. The GEOSAT satellite data are utilized which presented by I. R. Young and G. J. Holland (1996, named as GEOSAT data). At first, qualities of this data are investigated, and statistical characteristic trends are studied by means of applying known probability distribution functions. The wave height data of GEOSAT are compared to the data observed onboard merchant ships, the data observed by measure instrument installed on the ocean-going container ship and so on. To execute a long-tenn prediction of ship response, joint probability functions between wave height and wave period are introduced, therefore long-term statistical predictions are executed by using the functions.
