  • The behavior of a plane buoyant jet discharged vertically upward into a stagnant uniform environment is analyzed by continuity, momentum transport equation by numerical scheme. The governing equations are solved by finite difference method employing stream function and vorticity transport and Prandtl's turbulent model. Results for centerline velocities and temperatures, temperature distribution and flow pattern in receiving environment due to buoyant jet in the range of discharge densimetric Froude number of 4 to 32 show good agreement with published data. Spreading rate and dispersion ratio, which are required in integral type analysis of whole range of buoyant jet and have not been obtained yet, are derived in terms of discharge densimetric Froude number and vertical distance from source.

  • Flow structure and mixing characteristics in a micro combustor with a multi-hole baffle were numerically studied using the Reynolds stress model. The multi-hole baffle has geometrical features to produce multiple three-dimensional vortices inside combustion chamber. When the thickness of the baffle's geometrical factors changes, variations of vortical structures occur variously. Among these vortices, the vortex generated from the fuel stream exerts a critical influence on the mixing enhancement. The three-dimensional vortical structure, in its development state, was strongly dependent on the baffle thickness. In particular, as the baffle thickness decreases to values less than the diameter of the fuel hole, the jet stream in baffle holes changes from the parabolic to saddleback profile type. The sizes of recirculation zones inside combustion chamber and the mixing state were closely affected by the structure of the jet streams.

  • The viscous flow around a ship hull is calculated by the use of RANS(Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes) solver. Reynolds stresses are midelled by using the k-${epsilon}$ turbulence model and the law is applied near the body. Body fitted corrdinates are introduced for the treatment of the complex boundary of the ship hull form and the governing equations in the physical domain transformed into ones in the computational domain. The transformed equations are numerically solved by an employment of FVM(Finite Volume Method). SIMPLE(Semi-Implicit Pressure Linked Equation) method is adopted in the calculation of pressure and the solution of the sidcretized equation is obtained by the line-by-line method with the use of TDMA(Tri-Diagonal Matrix Algorithme). To assure the proprietty of this computing method, HSVA tanker and Dyne hull are calculated ar both model and ship scale Reynolds number. Their reaults of pressure distributions on fore and aft body, axial velocity contours and transverse velocity velocity vectors and viscous resistance coefficients are compared with other's experiments and calculations.

  • Three-dimensional endwall flow within a linear cascade passage of high performance turbine blade is simulated with a 3-D Wavier-Stokes CFD code (MOSA3D), which is based on body-fitted coordinate system, pressure-correction and finite volume method. the endwall flow characteristics, including the development and generation of horseshoe vortex, passage vortex, etc. are clearly simulated, consistent with the generally known tendency The effects of both turbulence model and convective differencing scheme on the Prediction performance of endwall flow are systematically analyzed in the present paper. The convective scheme is found to have stronger effect than the turbulence modei on the prediction performance of endwall flow. The present simulation result also indicates that the suction leg of the horseshoe vortex continues on the suction side until it reaches the trailing edge.

  • This study analyzes characteristics of flow using 3 dimensional numerical model, Delft3D, at the downstream of hydraulic structure. And fish shelters are suggested by analyzing them in flood time. A hydraulic structure changes flow conveyance, water depth and velocity affecting the activity of the fish. Flow depth decreases and velocity is fast near the left bank at the downstream of Gumi weir because of the concentration of flow due to it. Therefore, fish shelters are generated near the right bank of it. As a result of vertical velocity distribution which indicates the range of fish activity, maximum value are 0.0043 m/s in 30-year of return period of flood 0.0052 m/s in 50 year flood, 0.0046 m/s in 80-year of return period of flood, and 0.0039 m/s in 100-year of return period of flood. As the discharge increases, the areas of fish shelters decreases because depth and turbulent energy increase according to increases discharge. The estimated areas of fish shelters near the right bank decrease from 61.5% in 30-year of return period of flood to 39.0% 100-year of return period of flood. Therefore, the constructed hydraulic structures affect fish shelters.

  • In a numerical simulation of open channel turbulent flows using RANS (Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes) equations model equipped with VOF (Volume of Fluid) scheme, the determination of wall roughness for wall function was studied. The roughness constant, based on the law-of-the-wall for flow on rough walls, obtained by experimental works for pipe flows is employed in general wall functions. However, this constant of wall function is the function of Froude number in open channel flows. Thus, the wall roughness should be determined by taking into account the effect of Froude number. In addition, the wall roughness should be corresponding to Manning's roughness coefficient widely used for open channels. In this study, the relation between wall roughness height as an input condition and Manning's roughness coefficient was investigated, and an equation for effective wall roughness height considering the characteristics of numerical models was proposed as a function of Manning's roughness coefficient.

  • Analyzed was the circulation phenomena in the open channel with sudden expansion, by applying the Galerkin's finite element method to the depth-averaged 2-dimensional continuity and momentum equations. Wave tests were done in the simplified channel in order to review the validity of this newly developed model and the computed results were within 0.5% of $L_2$-norm error, and application of this model to the simulation of simplified dam-break gave very close results compared with the analytical solution, thus, it can be concluded that this model is valid and efficient. The main flow in the expanded channel was defined as a new initial condition with given velocity and the flow in the expanded portion was at rest in simulating the circulation, and besides the Neumann's condition the slip boundary condition for lateral wall was found to be proper condition than the no-slip condition. It can be concluded, from the numerical tests in the sudden expension, that the circulating phenomena depend mainly on the convective inertia and the effect of turbulence due to bottom shear and lateral shear is insignificant.

  • A numerical procedure for analyzing the heat transfer in a regenerative cooling passage of liquid rocket has been developed. The thermal analysis is based on the numerical model of Naraghi〔1〕. The thermodynamic and transport properties of the combustion gases are evaluated using the chemical equilibrium composition. The pressure and heat flux obtained by the isentropic relation are in good agreement with the result of Navier-Stokes equations. The effect of design parameters on heat transfer is addressed for the pressure loss and temperature variation. Also, their constraints in designing the cooling passage are recommended. Finally, in a heated rectangular duct, the effects of secondary flow on heat transfer are scrutinized by the nonlinear k- e -fu of Park et at.〔2〕.

  • Flow over a circular cylinder is studied numerically using a turbulence model. Based on the κ-ε-f/sub μ/ model of Park and Sung[6], a new damping function is used. The efficiency of the strain dependent damping function is addressed for vortex-shedding flows past a circular cylinder. The mean velocity and Reynolds stresses are compared with available experimental data at Re/sub D/= 3900. Also, the computational results for the Strouhal number are evaluated at several Reynolds number. The predictions by κ-ε-f/sub μ/ model are in good agreement with the experiments.
