In this paper three turbulence models including two-equation model by Blumberg and Mellor (1987), one-equation model with mixing length formula of Blackadar's (1962), and zero-equation model of Prandtl's (1925) were compared in homogeneous, unstratified channel flows. Steady flows which a steep-sided trapezoidal trench with uniform discharge, tidal flow and steady wind-driven flow in finite channels are considered in detail. Steady flows in a trench and tidal flows in a finite channel were reproduced fairly accurately and there was virtually no difference among results of three turbulence models. However, In case of steady wind-driven flow only two-equation model reproduced the important features of experimental data. the other two models underestimated the surface velocity. In tidal and wind-driven flows with negligibly small adjective and diffusive effects, the two-equation model gives rise to parabolic profile of eddy viscosity with maximum at the mid0depth, and the one and zero equation model based on Blackadar formula linear profile with maximum at the surface.

This study is focused on the comparison of a 3 dimensional numerical and hydraulic model experiment for the flow phenomenon when a lock gate is opened. The lock gate is designed to discharge the flood flow rate at $218m^3/s$ of Solicheon at the Kun Jang national industry complex. The three dimensional ${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$ turbulent model of ANSYS CFX-10 of the computational fluid dynamics(CFD) program was used. The characteristics of CFX-10 are able to be simulated effectively for turbulent flow, especially the flow separation of the boundary layer of the two phase interface of air and water. The velocity and the flow pattern of the numerical model was showed to be similar to the results of the hydraulic model experiment.
The objective of this study is to develop an accurate and robust two-dimensional finite element method for turbulence simulation in open channels. The model is based on Streamline Upwind/Petrov-Galerkin finite element method and Boussinesq's eddy viscosity theory. The method developed in the study is depth-averaged mixing length model which assumes anisotropic and local equilibrium state of turbulence. The model calibration and validation were performed by comparing with analytical solutions and observed data. Several numerical simulations were carried out, which examined the performance of the turbulence model for the purpose of sensitivity analysis. The uniform channels that appear horizontal flow and vertical flow were carried out. The model was also applied to the Han river was in for the applicability test. The results were compared with the observed data. The suggested model displayed reasonable flow distribution compare to the observed data in natural river flow. As a result of this study, the two-dimensional finite element model provides a reliable results for flow distribution based on the turbulence simulation in open channels.

Low Reynolds number second moment turbulence model which be applicable to the fine gird near the wall region was developed. In this model, turbulence model coefficients in the pressure strain model of the Reynolds stress equation was expressed as functions of turbulence Reynolds number $R_{t}\equivk^{2}/(\nu\varepsilon)).$ In the derivation procedure of the present low Reynolds number algebraic stress model, Laufer's near wall experimental data on Reynolds stresses were curve fitted as functions of R$_{t}$ and the resulting simultaneous equations of the model coefficients were solved by using the boundary conditions at wall and high Reynolds number limiting conditions. Predicted Reynolds stresses and dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy etc. in the 2 dimensional parallel, plane channel flow and pipe flow were compared with the preditions obtained by employing the Launder-Shima model, standard algebraic stress model and several experimental data. Results show that all the Reynolds stresses and dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy predicted by the present low Reynolds number algebraic stress model agree better with the experimental data than those predicted by other algebraic stress models.

In the present study, in order to analyze a turbulent flow in a square sectiond 180.deg. bend, Kim's low Reynolds number second moment turbulence closure is adopted. In this model, turbulence model constants in the wall region are modified as functions of turbulent Reynolds number by use of near wall turbulent universal properties based on Laufer's experimental results of Reynolds stress distriburions. Algebraic stress model and Reynolds stress equation model are used to verify the low Reynolds number second moment closure. The application of the present low Reynolds number algebraic stress model to the prediction of a square sectioned 180.deg. bend flow gives improved velocities and Reynolds stresses profiles compared with those obtained by using the van Driest mixing length model and present low Reynolds number Reynolds stress equation model.

Prediction performances by Einstein's equation of diffusivity, Peskin's model, Three-Equation model, Four-Equation model and Algebraic Stress Model, have been compared by analyzing twophase (air-solid) turbulent jet flow. Turbulent kinetic energy equation of dispersed phase was solved to investigate effects of turbulent kinetic energy on turbulent diffusivity. Turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate of particles has been considered by solving turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate equation of dispesed phase and applying it to turbulent diffusivity of dispersed phase. Results show that turbulent diffusivity of dispersed phase can be expressed by turbulent kinetic energy ratio between phases and prediction of turbulent kinetic energy was improved by considering turbulent kinetic energy dissipation rate of dispersed phase for modelling turbulent diffusivity. This investigation also show that Algebraic Stress Model is the most promising method in analyzing gas-solid two phaes turbulent flow.

This study presents a numerical modeling of mean flow and turbulence structures of partly-vegetated open-channel flows. For this, Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations with vegetation drag terms are solved numerically using the non-linear k-${\varepsilon}$ model. The numerical model is applied to laboratory experiments of Nezu and Onitsuka (2001), and simulated results are compared with data from measurement and computations by Kang and Choi's (2006) Reynolds stress model. The simulation results indicate that the proposed numerical model simulates the mean flow well. Twin vortices are found to be generated at the interface between vegetated and non-vegetated zones, where turbulence intensity and Reynolds stress show their maximums. The model simulates the pattern of the Reynolds stress well but under-predicts the intensity of Reynolds stress slightly.

Natural shoreline repeats its re-treatment and advance in response to the endlessly varying sea-conditions, and once severely eroded under stormy weather conditions, natural beaches are gradually recovered via a boundary layer streaming when swells are prevailing after storms cease. Our understanding of the boundary layer streaming over surf-zone often falls short despite its great engineering value, and here it should be noted that the most sediments available along the shore are supplied over the surf-zone. In this rationale, numerical simulation was implemented to investigate the hydraulic characteristics of boundary layer streaming over the surf zone in this study. In doing so, comprehensive numerical models made of Spatially filtered Navier-Stokes Eq., LES (Large Eddy Simulation), Dynamic Smagorinsky turbulence closure were used, and the effects of turbulence closure such as Dynamic Smagorinsky in LES and k-ε on the numerically simulated flow field were also investigated. Numerical results show that due to the intrinsic limits of k-ε turbulence model, numerically simulated flow velocity near the bottom based on k-ε model and wall function are over-predicted than the one using Dynamic Smagorinsky in LES. It is also shown that flow velocities near the bottom are faster than the one above the bottom which are relatively free from the presence of the bottom, complying the typical boundary layer streaming by Longuet-Higgins (1957), the spatial scope where boundary layer streaming are occurring is extended well into the surf zone as incoming waves are getting longer. These tendencies are plausible considering that it is the bottom friction that triggers a boundary layer streaming, and longer waves start to feel the bottom much faster than shorter waves.

A low-Reynolds-number second moment turbulence closure is improved with the aid of DNS data. For the model coefficients of pressure-strain terms, we adopted Shima's model with some modification. Shin and Choi's new dissipation-rate equation is employed to simulate accurately the turbulence energy dissipation rate distribution in the near wall sublayer. The results of computations are compared with DNS, LES data and experimental data for turbulent plane channel flow with rotation about spanwise axis. The present second moment closure achieves a level of agreement similar to that for the non-rotating. In particular, it accurately captures the distribution of turbulence energy dissipation rate in the near wall region.

Film flows applied to shell-and-tube heat exchangers in various industrial fields have been studied for a long time. One boundary of the film flow interfaces with a fixed wall, and the other boundary interfaces with a gaseous region. Thus, the flows become so unstable that wavy behaviors are generated on free surfaces as the film Reynolds number increases. First, high-amplitude solitary waves are detected in a low Reynolds number laminar region; then, the waves transit to a low-amplitude, high frequency ripple in a turbulent region. Film thickness is the most significant factor governing heat transfer. Since the wave accompanied in the film flow results in temporal and spatial variations in film thickness, it can be of importance for numerically predicting the film's wavy behavior. In this study, various turbulent models are applied for predicting low-amplitude ripple flows in turbulent regions. The results are compared with existing experimental results, and finally, the applied turbulent models are appraised in from the viewpoint of wavy behaviors.
