  • We evaluated the toxic effects of phenanthrene (PHE) and zinc undecylenate (ZU) on the population growth rate (r) of the marine diatom, Skeletonema costatum. The r of S. costatum was determined after 96 hrs of exposure to PHE (0, 25, 50, 100, 200 and 300 mg L-1) and ZU (0, 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 mg L-1). The results showed that r in the control (the absence of PHE and ZU) was greater than 0.04, while r in the treatment groups decreased with increasing PHE and ZU concentrations. PHE and ZU were shown to reduce r in a dose-dependent manner, with significant decreases occurring at concentrations above 50 and 10 mg L-1, respectively. The EC50 values of r in PHE and ZU exposure were 136.13 and 16.95 mg L-1, respectively. The no observed effect concentrations (NOEC) were 25 and 5 mg L-1, and the lowest observed effect concentrations (LOEC) were 50 and 10 mg L-1. These results indicated that concentrations of greater than 50 mg L-1 of PHE and 10 mg L-1 of ZU in marine ecosystems induced a toxic effect on the r of S. costatum. These results can serve as useful baseline data for the establishment of safety concentrations of PHE and ZU in marine ecosystems.

  • In order to investigate the pathogenicity and development of differential identification technique in the Yersinia species and other entericbacteria, we isolated 5 strains of Y.pseudotuberculosis from spring water sites in Seoul. The biochemical characteristics of isolated strains revealed that indole, VP($25^{\circ}C$, $37^{\circ}C$), $H_2S$, phenylalanine, lysine, arginine, ornithine, gas from glucose, lactose, sucrose, sorbitol, oxidase and motility($37^{\circ}C$) were all negative and urease, glucose, mannitol, salicin, catalase and motility($25^{\circ}C$) were all positive. To detect the causative agent of pseudotuberculosis(Y.pseudotuberculosis), we carried out a study using a PCR with inv primers complementary to the pathogenic region and found that all strains were positive, this revealed that strains from spring waters were pathogenic. Also 16S rDNA for total 5 strains of Y. pseudotuberculosis were amplified and a stretch of approximately 1,450 nucleotides were sequenced and analyzed. The 16S rDNA nucleotide sequence homologies among Yersinia species ranged 97.5% to 100% and between Y.pseudotuberculosis and other entericbacteria they ranged 93.0% to 95.1%. The Phylogenetic tree generated from the sequence analysis of the 16S rDNA gene showed 3 coherent clusters that could be separated into Y.pseudotuberculsis strains, some Yersinia species strains and other entericbacteria strains.

  • Investment in research and development (R&D) is critical in the information technology (IT) firms, where newer and better technology is a quintessential goal that directly affects innovation and competitive advantage. This study investigates how R&D investment influences firm performance and value, and how the effect of R&D investment differs between IT hardware and software firms. We also analyze the relationship between firm age and R&D investment in order to identify learning effects on continuous R&D investment. The empirical investigation in this study, based on longitudinal archival data from 2001 to 2010, found a significant effect of R&D investment on firm performance in IT firms. Further, this study demonstrates causal relationship between firm age, and verifies that learning effects are present in R&D investment. Moreover, the results are found to differ between IT hardware and IT software firms.

  • Cooked pork can be easily contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus during carriage and serving after cooking. This study was performed to develop growth prediction models of S. aureus to assure the safety of cooked pork. The Baranyi and Gompertz primary predictive models were compared. These growth models for S. aureus in cooked pork were developed at storage temperatures of 5, 15, and $25^{\circ}C$. The specific growth rate (SGR) and lag time (LT) values were calculated. The Baranyi model, which displayed a $R^2$ of 0.98 and root mean square error (RMSE) of 0.27, was more compatible than the Gompertz model, which displayed 0.84 in both $R^2$ and RMSE. The Baranyi model was used to develop a response surface secondary model to indicate changes of LT and SGR values according to storage temperature. The compatibility of the developed model was confirmed by calculating $R^2$, $B_f$, $A_f$, and RMSE values as statistic parameters. At 5, 15 and $25^{\circ}C$, $R^2$ was 0.88, 0.99 and 0.99; RMSE was 0.11, 0.24 and 0.10; $B_f$ was 1.12, 1.02 and 1.03; and $A_f$ was 1.17, 1.03 and 1.03, respectively. The developed predictive growth model is suitable to predict the growth of S. aureus in cooked pork, and so has potential in the microbial risk assessment as an input value or model.

  • In this paper, the evaluation equations proposed by Tange et al. and Ando et al. were used to evaluate the threshold stress intensity factor ∆KRth(s) and fatigue limit ∆𝜎Rwc, according to the small crack of offshore structural steel F690. Despite the differences in concept and shape of the two equations, the ∆KRth(s) and ∆𝜎Rwc proved completely consistent. It is possible to use these equations to evaluate the dependence of the crack length on the ∆KRth(s) and ∆𝜎Rwc of structures made of all steel grades. With these equations, the characteristics of microcracks can be quantitatively evaluated, and the safety and reliability of the structure can be secured.

  • As the global semiconductor supply chain falters, major countries are pushing to increase their self-sufficiency in semiconductors. In accordance with these global changes, R&D cooperation is evolving in the semiconductor industry. Previously, as for the case of Interuniversity Microelectronics Center (IMEC) in Europe, many cooperation initiatives were established regardless of nationality for improving productivity through measures such as reducing the time and cost required for joint research. Recently, however, cooperation aimed at strengthening one's own industry has been prominent, such as that led by Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute (TSRI) and the United States National Semiconductor Technology Center (NSTC). Hence, the Korean semiconductor industry also needs to respond. Internally, technology localization should be promoted by strengthening the foundation for domestic R&D cooperation, while externally, it should expand close cooperation with companies from countries leading the semiconductor industry, such as the United States, Europe, and Japan.

  • Mutans streptococci have been reported to be implicated in dental caries. Of these streptococcal species, Streptcoccus mutans and Streptococcus sobrinus are most commonly found in human dental caries. Prevalence of these bacterial species in dental caries is found to be varied in different races and countries. Therefore, importance of these bacteria in dental caries remains to be determined The present study was performed to find out correlation S. mutans and S. sobrinus with dental caries in 125 Korean children with mixed dentition between 6 to 11 years of age. They were classified as group A(6-8 years) and group B(9-11 years) by age. For the study, stimulated saliva samples were collected from each subject. The vials containing saliva specimens were serially diluted (1:10) in saline and plated in duplicate on tryptone-yeast extract-cysteine with sucrose and bacitracin (TYCSB) for S. mutans and S. sobrinus. After genomic DNA was extracted from the samples, polymerase chain reaction (PCR) amplification was performed for identification using universal primers and specific primers to S. mutans and S. sobrinus. Data of microbial variables were compared to caries status of the subjects. According to this study, the result were as follows : 1. S. mutans versus S. sobrinus were moderate positive linear correlated in both group A(r=0.70) and group B(r=0.50). 2. Between S. mutans and dental caries there were weak positive linear correlation in both group A(r= 0.25) and group B(r=0.34). 3. S. sobrinus versus dental caries were not correlated in group A but slightly correlated in group B(r=0.21). 4. Between S. mutans and age, there were not correlation in both group. 5. S. sobrinus versus age were weak correlated in group A(r=0.32) but not correlated in group B.

  • Boiling heat transfer coefficients of pure refrigerants (R22, R32, R134a, R125, R290, and R600a) and refrigerant mixtures (R32/Rl34a, R290/ R600a, and R32/R125) are measured experimentally and compared with Chen's correlation. The test section is a seamless stainless steel tube with inner diameter of 7.7mm and uniformly heated by applying electric current directly to the tube. Heat fluxes range from 10 to 30kW$^2$. Mass fluxes are set to 424 ~ 742kg/m$^{2}$s for R22, R32, R134a, R32/R134a, and R32/Rl25 ; 265 ~ 583kg/m$^{2}$s for R290, R600a, and R290/R600a. Heat transfer coefficients depend strongly on heat flux at a low quality region and become independent as quality increases. Convective boiling term in the Chen's correlation predicts experimental data of the pure refrigerants fairly well (relative error of 12.1% for the data of quality over 0.2). The correlation for pure substances overpredicts the heat transfer coefficients for nonazeotropic refrigerant mixtures.

  • The purpose of this study was to test the stability of TPN basic solutions containing amino acids and dextrose. Test solutions containing $4.25\%$ amino acids in $25\%$ dextrose (central TPN basic solution) or $4.25\%$ amino acids in $10\%$ dextrose (peripheral TPN basic solution) were prepared. Two different amino acids solutions $(Fravasol^{(R)}\;vs\;Freamine^{(R)})$ were tested. The samples were taken from each admixture and stored in the evacuated, sterile containers at $2{\sim}8^{\circ}C$ and ambient room temperature. Each sample was analyzed at 0, 3, 7, 14 and 30 days of storage. Each amino acid was analyzed by amino acid analyzer. Dextrose content was measured by polarimeter. The pH and chromagen formation were also monitored. The decomposition was measured by the changes in concentration of amino acids and dextroser TPN basic $solution-Freamine^{(R)}$ admixture stored at $2\sim8^{\circ}C$ were stable for 30 days. Central and peripheral TPN basic solutions stored at room temperature were stable for 7 days and 14 days, respectively. There were no changes in color for 30 days by naked eye. Amino acid concentrations in TPN basic $solution-Fravasol^{(R)}$ admixture stored at $2\sim8^{\circ}C$ or room temperature were stable for 30 days. But, significant color change was detected according to passing time. In conclusion, Peripheral TPN basic $solution-Fravasol^{(R)}$ admixture stored at room temperature and in refrigerator were stable for 3 days and 7 days, respectively. However, central TPN basic solution-Fravasol admixtures were unstable. Therefore, it is recommended that it should be admixed right before use.
