  • This study has been performed to explore conveniences and inconveniences of daily lives in rural residential care facilities among the elderly residents. In this study, five males and seven females aged 68 to 78 were asked about socio-familial and physical aspects of their daily lives in the facilities such as meals, social activities, family visits, recreation, and health care. The answers of the qualitative interview were drawn as follow; first, the residents perceived well planned regular meals and snacks, free visits of friends, regularly supervised daily sanitary activities, periodic outdoor activities, education programs provided by religious experts, and pastoral farming lives as most convenient aspects of the retirement facilities. In addition, some felt that facility life made them free of familial conflicts, while others appealed fear of being forgotten because of distant location. On the other hand, they perceived the supervised group activities and meals as major inconveniences. They also felt persistently depressed when closely observing serious illness or deaths of their co-residents. Therefore in this study, suggestions were made as follows: first, combination of normal family life and retirement facility should be developed in the mixed form of community welfare center and shared home. Second, intensive medical care facilities should be in collaboration with the retirement facilities, so that the residents are relieved from stressful contacts with extremely ill patients in the residential area.

  • The purpose of this study is to extract deficiency areas as basic data of policies and projects in the future Living SOC introduction and planning. In order to extract living SOC deficient areas, accessibility data for living SOC and density data for main users by facility were overlapped, focusing on the living SOC indicators presented in the National Urban Regeneration Basic Policy. According to the analysis of accessibility of the Iksan-si Living SOC, the gap between deficiency in urban and township areas was large in common with the accessibility of the village and local base units. As a result of overlapping life SOC accessibility data and density data analysis of the main users by facility, areas where accessibility is weak but not inhabited by the main users of each facility were extracted. It is meaningful that more accurate deficient areas can be extracted by simultaneously utilizing the density distribution of the main users, rather than simply accessing the facilities.

  • In recent years in Japan, derelict land by aging fanners has increased at the same time as the desire of city dwellers for a more natural, leisurely lifestyle. In response, an increasing number of citizens' farms(or 'allotment gardens') have opened in and around urban areas. Citizens' farms with overnight accommodation are known as 'kleingartens'. As a case study, we evaluated a kleingarten in the town of Suo-oshima by interviewing the resident caretaker and conducting a questionnaire survey of facility users. Our survey revealed a number of ways in which the facility could be improved to meet user needs. The case study also suggested that kleingartens are an effective means of revitalizing local communities in rural areas.

In contrast to the expectation that the situation of being lost and wandering would occur only at a crossroads, it is not that such situation took place at specific places like a crossroads or where direction signs were inaccurate. Walking tourists of this field experiment also confronted situations of having lost confidence about continuing the ongoing direction, of having anxiety over walking a walking trail, of feeling discomfort caused by walking and of being offended by uncomfortable or messy areas of walking trial. • The purpose of this study is to provide a plan to promote the use of life SOC facilities by analyzing the factors affecting utilization of life SOC facilities established as part of the rural center revitalization project. To this end, we selected Seongjeon-myeon, Gangjin-gun where the rural center revitalization project was implemented, conducted a survey on residents while analyzing the project details, and analyzed the results. This study revealed that the residents with a cognitive level for the rural center revitalization project and life SOC tended to more actively use the life SOC facilities. Therefore, to boost residents' use of the life SOC facilities, it is necessary to promote their understanding of and interest in the rural center revitalization project in the project implementation phase and have them be sufficiently aware of the facilities by operating pilot programs for residents in each facility and holding local events and festivals. This study will lay a steppingstone for active resident use of life SOC facilities established in rural centers and provide basic data for further research.
