  • Modern society is filled with the pursuit of material wealth and great convenience due to high technology that has been introduced to all facets of society. There is no exception to this in the field of construction. Modern construction, however, has caused environmental destruction and pollution, disturbing the coexistence of humans and nature. Therefore, this thesis aims to explore how humans and nature can maintain a mutually beneficial relationship by looking into the construction of Jeju's traditional dwelling house. This thesis examines the geographical features of Jeju and looks into how Jeju people have adapted themselves to nature. It is assumed that geographical features have created Jeju's unique environment and style of architecture and differentiated Jeju's traditional houses from those of other regions. Also, it is considered that geographical features had a large impact on traditional construction such as the floor plan and the layout of buildings. Accordingly, this thesis explores the way traditional houses protected house dwellers from the natural environment and examines the wisdom of our ancestors who took advantage of the natural environment. In addition, this thesis aims to contribute to creating Jeju's unique construction culture and environment by studying materials, structures, and forms that were applied to the traditional houses of Jeju.

The Major findings can be summarized as follows : 1) The ratio of type A project(newly planned village) in the total cases of the Rural Village Improvement Project has increased since 1990, In the majority(91.2%) of the type A project, the project area is below 2 ha and density of dwelling unit is below 40 households/ha. 2) The three spatial structures of newly planned rural village, i.e., Loop pattern, Cul-de-sac pattern, and Dendritic pattern, are identified. And the barns in the newly-build houses are categorized into the five types : the vertical addition type, the horizontal addition type, the vertical- horizontal addition type, the no- barn type, and the reused -barn type. 3) In the newly planned rural villages, the level of satisfactions for the quality of house and water & sewer system is remarkably higher than in the existing rural villages. These are the positive effects caused by the Rural Village Improvement Project. 4) The majority of the villagers think the improvement of the existing rural village, instead of redevelopment or newly planned village, is most desirable, which means the improvement of houses, roads, and sanitary facilities while preserving the spatial structures of the existing village.

  • When the castle of the city was destructed from 1911 through 1915 in Cheongju, the city's spatial structure was reorganized and "Han-ok Housing", a dwelling site filled with Korean traditional houses, was newly formed around the former castle site. These days, the Han-ok housing in Seoun-dong, Cheongju in which elderly couples and senior citizens live is enclosed by modernized roads and three or four-story buildings, leaving the housing as an isolated island in the city block. Nonetheless, the Han-ok housing not only plays an important role in sustaining the historic and local identity of the city, but also offers environmental benefits in terms of daylighting and ventilation. The purpose of this study is to reorganize the housing suitable for those who currently live and recreate it by adding new functionality. Consequently, three strategies are established; the conservation of existing building through the improvement of existing facilities; the conversion of vacant buildings into a new use; and the creation of the urban mid-rise Han-ok housing at street sides. The first strategy has a significance in that the traditional building's single wing plan, small room sizes and lack of storages now cause great inconvenience for current life style. The second strategy also promotes the practical use of abandoned buildings through alterations and additions. Finally, the creation of the urban mid-rise Han-ok housing that is accomplished by the combination of reinforced concrete and wooden structure interacts with or respond to the city's development. As a result, this study for the adaptive reuse of Han-ok housing proves how the traditional properties can be maintained in a careful manner and how its creative reuse can be achieved.

  • This study is about Tak Mok theory of feng-shui ideology which was main thought in Choson dynasty or some other thoughts and noble families' thought of garden building : planting trees and properties of the noble families garden. The result from the study of noble family's garden molding is as follows. In the noble family's garden molding, there were considerations of plant ecology known through long experience and the functional aspect of planting tree and esthetic sense of housing circumstances, in addition to feng-shui thought, Taoist thought and the doctrine of the five natural elements of the positive vs. negative. We can learn Choson's noble family's garden included playroom as well as symbolic and incantatory meaning. Also in the thought of noble family's garden molding we can found proper element for modern housing plan such as an ecological peculiarity or functional aspect of dwelling circumstance. And we can also found they didn't show a rejection symptoms against nature but enclosed with straight form which was traditional trait, and each space of it is composed organically. Also we knew they selected a diverse and refined technique with it's decorating the Choson dynasty playful and meditative space. We found that the key point of the thought of noble family's garden molding were on the basis of Confucianal mood, content amid poverty thought and free technique of it.
