The floor plans are changed into Dual-bay-type of Divided-space from Single-bay-type of Hollistic-space, the largest ratio at present, and the numbers of space are increased. In the view of total outline, their dwelling houses are based to those of east-northern Korea and are sustained to the vernacular dwelling styles(ex : floor heating, ondol, and sit-down), and are adapted to the geography and climate of Yanbian and accepted to the culture of other communities(ex : indoor-kitchen, indoor-removing-shoes).

The respondents are 118 residents living in rural houses constructed with industrialized wall structures. Physical elements of indoor environment(temperature, humidity, air quality, and noise level) were measured in three sample houses, which were selected considering of architectural characteristics. The findings are as follows; 1) As a result of questionnaire survey, residents' responses to dwelling quality are generally positive. 2) As a result of measurement, indoor environments of sample houses are in relatively comfortable condition. 3) As a summary of research, ALC and ST'L are evaluated as recommendable structures for a rural house.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine the space usage behaviors of dwelling by using field study method and by interviewing residents of apartment houses in rural areas. It has been found that the main occupancy space among the residents of apartment houses in rural area is based on agricultural activities. This study will show that apartment houses in rural areas must, as a necessity, reflect the characteristics and needs of its rural environment. It is certain that the existing "unit plan" is not a suitable method. Residents of rural areas have been able to adjust themselves to their current dwelling space properly. This is, mainly, due to economic factors. The interior space is used for simple everyday activities like loading, deposit and drying things. "Nongmak" is a space used for agricultural work and the balcony is used for storage of various things. In conclusion, this study strongly suggested that secure storage space based on the farmhouse model and rural lifestyle should be necessary. Furthermore, special designed cubic shelves should be placed in utility rooms and balconys. And the design and function of apartment houses in rural areas must reflect the needs of its residents.

  • There have been numerous researches on Nak-An village in Jeollanamdo, one of the most representative traditional castle village in Korea. Most of them have dealt with general and physical architectural scale and features separately. Therefore this study aims to understand the compositional characteristics of building layout and exterior space and the relations between street system and dwelling unit of folk houses in Nak-An village. The study examined houses of ordinary people in Nak-An village constructed before the village was not affected by foreign influences. 36 folk houses in Nak-An built from nineteenth century to early twentieth century and believed to have few physical changes from the original floor plans and architectural forms were the subjects to be analyzed. The most popular types in building layout are "Open L"and "Open U". The most typical orientation of main building is Southwest. The favorable entry into the dwelling lot is from the side. The street system in the village consists of main streets of South-North, resulting in dwelling lots with North-South axis most general. This site condition forces the entry into the lot from North main street and the side access to the main building. From these findings, the building layout and the entry into the dwelling lot of folk houses in Nak-An are strongly related with street system and conditions of dwelling lot.

  • Dwelling environments that can help elderly farmers to live more safely, independently, and conveniently are becoming more and more important. Many rural houses are built without any particular architectural or energy-related criteria, so most of them have poor insulation. The construction technology used is also not precise, which increases the loads for heating and cooling. Therefore, rural houses need to be improved. Also, there is more and more need for plans to realize eco-friendly dwellings, so the principle of nature-oriented plans related to the direction, insulation, or landscaping of a house is being emphasized. Insulation is one of the most effective ways to save energy for heating and cooling. This preliminary study to improve the insulation of rural houses examined three regions in South Korea: the central region, the southern region, and the Jeju Island. A field investigation was conducted on a total of 18 houses, including six from each town in the selected regions. The information was used to figure out the current status of rural houses and the characteristics of the buildings. The main living spaces are the living room for the central region and the main room in the southern region and Jeju Island. The southern regions are plane shapes surrounded by rooms, and all ventilation is accomplished by windows. The studied houses were mostly masonry structures with slate rooftops. Additions and improvements included room expansions and bathroom interior installations.

  • This paper tries to explore the local uniqueness and evolutionary characteristics of the spatial structure of the rural dwelling houses of China's Korean Ethnic. For this purpose, the paper selected 51 typical samples in each district, analyzing their ancestral home, building age, size, construction method, family composition etc. Moreover, the paper classified the pattern of the samples and analyzed the characteristic and evolutionary process of each pattern. Conclusions based on the analysis of the ancestral homes are as follows: 1.The house pattern of these China's Korean ethnics who are originally from the Hamkyung province is mainly jeongji- access type (A-type). A-type is mainly distributed along the Tumen River and Yalu River, in the Sino-Russian borders and the inland areas of Heilongjiang province. With the migration of the China's Korean ethnics, in Sino-Russian borders and the inland areas of Heilongjiang province, A-type with the 'badang' space, vestibule-access type (C-type) and living-centered type (D-type) appeared. 2. House patterns of Korean ethnics who are originally from the Pyongan province include three types: A-type, kitchen type (B-type) and C-type. A-type is mainly distributed along the Yalu River while B-type and C-type are mainly in the inland areas of these three Northeast provinces. With the decrease of population, the merger of rooms happened in A-type; while in the B-type and C-type, bathroom and storage came to exist in the north of the room. 3. The house pattern of Korean ethnics who are originally from the Gyeongsang province is mainly B-type, which is distributed in the inland areas of Heilongjiang and Jilin provinces. Besides, C-type and D-type also exist. They are in Jilin and Liaoning provinces. In the process of evolution, storage was set in the north part of the room or the window was cancelled in order to defend the coldness in Heilongjiang area, while in Jilin and Liaoning provinces, living room came into existence, which is gradually developing to D-type.

So more effective models, this study examine requests of a rural house project designers, constructors, and tenants. Checked items are classified into four groups that working area, dwelling area, constructive and environmental parts. Each groups are also divided into detailed items for basic decisional elements. When basis points sets 10, it can be divided that working area parts 3pts, dwelling area parts 2.5pts, constructive parts 3pts and environmental parts 1.5pts. In this results, we can make a proposal of evaluation on additive value quality model for a rural house in design value engineering.
