Combination Effect of Various Freezing and Thawing Techniques on Quality and Nutritional Attributes of Onions (다양한 냉·해동 방법에 따른 양파의 이화학적 특성 및 영양성분 변화)

  • This study evaluated the combination effect of various freezing and thawing techniques on the quality and nutritional aspects of onions. Onions were frozen by natural air convection freezing (NCF), air blast freezing (ABF), and liquid nitrogen freezing (LNF). Onions were frozen for 76 min by NCF, 9 min by ABF, and 9 min by LNF. The freezing treatment was stopped when the core temperature reached $-12^{\circ}C$ for NCF and ABF, and $-120^{\circ}C$ for LNF. Frozen samples were thawed through natural air convection thawing, running water thawing, sonication thawing (ST), or microwave thawing. The quality and nutritional aspects of frozen-thawed onions were evaluated by measuring thawing loss, pH, texture, water content, color, and SEM image. ST was found to cause the least loss in onion sample among the tested thawing methods, whereas the freezing methods did not cause any significant loss. In our experiment, thawing is found to be a more critical technique when compared to that of freezing. There were no clear quantifications or trends of pH and water content among different freezing and thawing techniques. The highest total color difference (${\Delta}E$) was observed in the NCF sample. For morphological observation, ABF gave the smallest ice crystal size, as well as minimum cell collapse. Loss of vitamin C, free sugar, and organic acid content was lower in the ABF and ST sample, when compared to other trials. In our study, we found that combination of ABF and ST could preserve the quality and nutritional aspects of frozen-thawed onions better than other methods.

  • As jet lag of modern travel continues to spread, there has been an exponential growth in popular explanations of jet lag and recommendations for curing it. Some of this attention are misdirected, and many of those suggested solutions are misinformed. The author reviewed the basic science of jet lag and its practical outcome. The jet lag symptoms stemed from several factors, including high-altitude flying, lag effect, and sleep loss before departure and on the aircraft, especially during night flight. Jet lag has three major components; including external de synchronization, internal desynchronization, and sleep loss. Although external de synchronization is the major culprit, it is not at all uncommon for travelers to experience difficulty falling asleep or remaining asleep because of gastrointestinal distress, uncooperative bladders, or nagging headaches. Such unwanted intrusions most likely to reflect the general influence of internal desynchronization. From the free-running subjects, the data has revealed that sleep tendency, sleepiness, the spontaneous duration of sleep, and REM sleep propensity, each varied markedly with the endogenous circadian phase of the temperature cycle, despite the facts that the average period of the sleep-wake cycle is different from that of the temperature cycle under these conditions. However, whereas the first ocurrence of slow wave sleep is usually associated with a fall in temperature, the amount of SWS is determined primarily by the length of prior wakefulness and not by circadian phase. Another factor to be considered for flight in either direction is the amount of prior sleep loss or time awake. An increase in sleep loss or time awake would be expected to reduce initial sleep latency and enhance the amount of SWS. By combining what we now know about the circadian characteristics of sleep and homeostatic process, many of the diverse findings about sleep after transmeridian flight can be explained. The severity of jet lag is directly related to two major variables that determine the reaction of the circadian system to any transmeridian flight, eg., the direction of flight, and the number of time zones crossed. Remaining factor is individual differences in resynchmization. After a long flight, the circadian timing system and homeostatic process can combine with each other to produce a considerable reduction in well-being. The author suggested that by being exposed to local zeit-gebers and by being awake sufficient to get sleep until the night, sleep improves rapidly with resynchronization following time zone change.

Adaptive Search Range Decision for Accelerating GPU-based Integer-pel Motion Estimation in HEVC Encoders (HEVC 부호화기에서 GPU 기반 정수화소 움직임 추정을 고속화하기 위한 적응적인 탐색영역 결정 방법)

  • In this paper, we propose a new Adaptive Search Range (ASR) decision algorithm for accelerating GPU-based Integer-pel Motion Estimation (IME) of High Efficiency Video Coding (HEVC). For deciding the ASR, we classify a frame into two models using Motion Vector Differences (MVDs) then adaptively decide the search ranges of each model. In order to apply the proposed algorithm to the GPU-based ME process, starting points of the ME are decided using only temporal Motion Vectors (MVs). The CPU decides the ASR as well as the starting points and transfers them to the GPU. Then, the GPU performs the integer-pel ME. The proposed algorithm reduces the total encoding time by 37.9% with BD-rate increase of 1.1% and yields 951.2 times faster ME against the CPU-based anchor. In addition, the proposed algorithm achieves the time reduction of 57.5% in the ME running time with the negligible coding loss of 0.6%, compared with the simple GPU-based ME without ASR decision.

AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY OF THE IRRADIATION EFFECTS ON THE MICROVASCULATURE OF THE RAT SUBMANDIBULAR GLAND (방사선 조사가 백서 악하선 미세혈관계에 미치는 영향에 관한 실험적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of irradiation on the microvascular structure of the submandibular gland in rats. For this study, 110 male rats were singly irradiated with the dose of 10Gy or 20Gy to their neck region by 6MV X-irradiation and sacrificed on the 1st, 3rd, 7th, 14th and 28th day after irradiation. The author observed distribution and structural changes of the microvasculature in rat submandibular glands using a scanning electron microscope by forming vascular resin casting. The author observed ultrastructural changes of the endothelial cells using a transmission electron microscope, and also histologic changes using a light microscope at Hematoxylin and Eosin staining and PAS staining process. The results of the irradiation effects on the microvasculature in rat submandibular gland were as follows: By light microscopic examination, the dilation of small vessels were observed until the 7th day after irradiation. After then, the vascular constriction and decrease in number of small vessels were noticed. Changes were greater on 20Gy irradiated group than on lOGy irradiated group. The reaction to PAS staining at acinar cells was decreased just after irradiation, but gradually recovered with days. There was no specific difference between two irradiated groups. By scanning electron microscopic examination, general findings on the two irradiated groups were similar. The dilation of conduits and meandering were observed on the 3rd day after irradiation. Decrease of capillary density and blunt ended small vessels were appeared on the 7th day after irradiation. After that, findings of the tortuous and twisted vascular running and coarseness of capillary lumen were increased. Changes were greater on 20Gy irradiated group than on l0Gy irradiated group. By transmission electron microscopic examination, increase of the formation of cytoplasmic process was observed on the 3rd day after irradiation. After that, swelling of endothelial cell and bridge formation of cytoplasmic processes were also observed, but destruction of endothelial cell and loss of basement membrane were observed only on 20Gy irradiated group on the 28th day after irradiation.

Study on Imputation Methods of Missing Real-Time Traffic Data (실시간 누락 교통자료의 대체기법에 관한 연구)

  • There are many cities installing ITS(Intelligent Transportation Systems) and running TMC(Trafnc Management Center) to improve mobility and safety of roadway transportation by providing roadway information to drivers. There are many devices in ITS which collect real-time traffic data. We can obtain many valuable traffic data from the devices. But it's impossible to avoid missing traffic data for many reasons such as roadway condition, adversary weather, communication shutdown and problems of the devices itself. We couldn't do any secondary process such as travel time forecasting and other transportation related research due to the missing data. If we use the traffic data to produce AADT and DHV, essential data in roadway planning and design, We might get skewed data that could make big loss. Therefore, He study have explored some imputation techniques such as heuristic methods, regression model, EM algorithm and time-series analysis for the missing traffic volume data using some evaluating indices such as MAPE, RMSE, and Inequality coefficient. We could get the best result from time-series model generating 5.0$\%$, 0.03 and 110 as MAPE, Inequality coefficient and RMSE, respectively. Other techniques produce a little different results, but the results were very encouraging.

A Nobel Video Quality Degradation Monitoring Schemes Over an IPTV Service with Packet Loss (IPTV 서비스에서 패킷손실에 의한 비디오품질 열화 모니터링 방법)

  • In this paper, we propose a novel video quality degradation monitoring scheme titled VR-VQMS(Visual Rhythm based Video Quality Monitoring Scheme) over an IPTV service prone to packet losses during network transmission. Proposed scheme quantifies the amount of quality degradation due to packet losses, and can be classified into a RR(reduced-reference) based quality measurement scheme exploiting visual rhythm data of H.264-encoded video frames at a media server and reconstructed ones at an Set-top Box as feature information. Two scenarios, On-line and Off-line VR-VQMS, are proposed as the practical solutions. We define the NPSNR(Networked Peak-to-peak Signal-to-Noise Ratio) modified by the well-known PSNR as a new objective quality metric, and several additional objective and subjective metrics based on it to obtain the statistics on timing, duration, occurrence, and amount of quality degradation. Simulation results show that the proposed method closely approximates the results from 2D video frames and gives good estimation of subjective quality(i.e.,MOS(mean opinion score)) performed by 10 test observers. We expect that the proposed scheme can play a role as a practical solution to monitor the video quality experienced by individual customers in a commercial IPTV service, and be implemented as a small and light agent program running on a resource-limited set-top box.

Shifts of Geographic Distribution of Pinus koraiensis Based on Climate Change Scenarios and GARP Model (GARP 모형과 기후변화 시나리오에 따른 잣나무의 지리적 분포 변화)

  • The main purpose of this study is to understand the potential geographic distribution of P. koraiensis, which is known to be one of major economic tree species, based on the RCP (Representative Concentration Pathway) 8.5 scenarios and current geographic distribution from National Forest Inventory(NFI) data using ecological niche modeling. P. koraiensis abundance data extracted from NFI were utilized to estimate current geographic distribution. Also, GARP (Genetic Algorithm for Rule-set Production) model, one of the ecological niche models, was applied to estimate potential geographic distribution and to project future changes. Environmental explanatory variables showing Area Under Curve (AUC) value bigger than 0.6 were selected and constructed into the final model by running the model for each of the 27 variables. The results of the model validation which was performed based on confusion matrix statistics, showed quite high suitability. Currently P. koraiensis is distributed widely from 300m to 1,200m in altitude and from south to north as a result of national greening project in 1970s although major populations are found in elevated and northern area. The results of this study were successful in showing the current distribution of P. koraiensis and projecting their future changes. Future model for P. koraiensis suggest large areas predicted under current climate conditions may be contracted by 2090s showing dramatic habitat loss. Considering the increasing status of atmospheric $CO_2$ and air temperature in Korea, P. koraiensis seems to experience the significant decrease of potential distribution range in the future. The final model in this study may be used to identify climate change impacts on distribution of P. koraiensis in Korea, and a deeper understanding of its correlation may be helpful when planning afforestation strategies.

A comparative study of field measurements of the pressure wave with analytical aerodynamic model for the high speed train in tunnels (고속철도 터널내 압력파 측정과 공기압 해석모델에 대한 기초연구)

  • The pressure wave formed by the piston effects of the train proceeds within the tunnel when a train enters the tunnel with a high speed. Depending on the condition of tunnel exit, the compression waves reflect at a open end, change to the expansion waves, transfer to tunnel entrance back. Due to interference in the pressure waves and running train, passengers experience severe pressure fluctuations. And these pressure waves result in energy loss, noise, vibration, as well as in the passengers' ears. In this study, we performed comparison between numerical analysis and field experiments about the characteristics of the pressure waves transport in tunnel that appears when the train enter a tunnel and the variation of pressure penetrating into the train staterooms according to blockage ratio of train. In addition, a comparative study was carried out with the ThermoTun program to examine the applicability of the compressible 1-D model(based on the Method of Characteristics). Furthermore examination for the adequacy of the governing equations analysis based on compressible 1-D numerical model by Baron was examined.

Prediction and analysis of structural noise of a box girder using hybrid FE-SEA method

  • With the rapid development of rail transit, rail transit noise needs to be paid more and more attention. In order to accurately and effectively analyze the characteristics of low-frequency noise, a prediction model of vibration of box girder was established based on the hybrid FE-SEA method. When the train speed is 140 km/h, 200 km/h and 250 km/h, the vibration and noise of the box girder induced by the vertical wheel-rail interaction in the frequency range of 20-500 Hz are analyzed. Detailed analysis of the energy level, sound pressure contribution, modal analysis and vibration loss power of each slab at the operating speed of 140 km /h. The results show that: (1) When the train runs at a speed of 140km/h, the roof contributes more to the sound pressure at the far sound field point. Analyzing the frequency range from 20 to 500 Hz: The top plate plays a very important role in controlling sound pressure, contributing up to 70% of the sound pressure at peak frequencies. (2) When the train is traveling at various speeds, the maximum amplitude of structural vibration and noise generated by the viaduct occurs at 50 Hz. The vibration acceleration of the box beam at the far field point and near field point is mainly concentrated in the frequency range of 31.5-100 Hz, which is consistent with the dominant frequency band of wheel-rail force. Therefore, the main frequency of reducing the vibration and noise of the box beam is 31.5-100 Hz.   • This paper presents architecture and control method of packet scheduler to guarantee QoS of high quality streaming services in high-speed packet-switched networks. Since streaming services need far more stringent QoS requirements than the typical sort of burst data applications, they should be guaranteed minimum bandwidth and end-to-end delay bound to each flow, regardless of the behavior of other flows. To meet these requirements, a packet scheduler isolate a flow from the undesirable effects of other flows and provides end-to-end delay guarantees for individual flow and divides stringently the available link bandwidth among flows sharing the link. Until now, many vendors are developing traffic management chips running at 10Gbps, but most of chips have drawbacks to support high quality streaming services. In this paper, we investigate the drawbacks of commercial TM chips and traffic characteristic of streaming services and present implementation frameworks of the proposed packet scheduler. Finally, we analyze the simulation results of the proposed scheduler.
