  • Among many other alternative energy resources, small scale hydropower has been brought into attention as a reliable source of energy today, which had been relatively neglected since 1960s. Present low head of Francis turbines and small scale hydroturbines, however, have limitations in the minimum required head and flow rate for efficient operation. This study attempts to develope the Francis turbine which is expected to run efficiently even in very low head and small flow rate, so that the limitations on the conventional small scale hydropower could alleviated and competition with other alternative energy sources in the changable design conditions could attained. The Francis turbine of a new concept was designed based on changable design conditions, hydrodynamics and theory of power transmission. The result of the study shows that two stages runner is more efficient, cheaper in construction, faster responding, and easier maintaining than single stage runner of Francis turbine

  • A large plastic molding requires an injection molding with a large clamping force. However, it could not be prepared in the manufacturing at any time. In order to solve the problem, the injection molding analysis study was conducted on the back cover of 55 inch LED TV. The study compared the case of applying the existing flow system such as hot runner, the improvement of the hot runner lay-out and the precise control of the gate operation time, From the results of using the improved flow system, it was found that the welding and the clamping force were considerably improved as compared with before the improvement. In particular, the clamping force was reduced by 50% compared with before the improvement.

  • Most of developed countries, the consumption of fossil fuels has been serious problems that cause serious environment pollution like acid rain, global warming. Also, we have faced that limitation fossil fuels will be exhausted. Currently, small hydropower attracts attention because of its small, clean, renewable, and abundant energy resources to develop. By using a small hydropower generator of which main concept is based on using the different water pressure levels in pipe lines, energy which was initially wasted by use of a reducing valve at the end of the pipeline, is collected by turbine in the hydropower generator. A propeller shaped hydroturbine has been used in order to use this renewable pressure energy. In this study, in order to acquire basic design data of tubular type hydraulic turbine, output power, head, efficiency characteristics due to the flow coefficient are examined in detail. Tubular-turbine among small hydraulic power generation can be used at low-head. The purpose of this study is to research turbine's efficiency due to runner vane angle using CFD analysis.

  • This paper presents the performance characteristic of a Francis hydro turbine with an inline casing. This turbine is designed for city water supply system. Due to large changes in ground elevation with high points and low points, some systems may experience larger-than-normal required pressures in areas with low ground elevations. One way to dissipate these excess pressures is by the use of an inline-turbine instead of an inline-pressure reducing valve. For best applicability and minimal space consumption, the turbine is designed with an inline casing instead of the common spiral casing. As a characteristic of inline casing, the flow accesses to the runner in the radial direction, showing a low efficiency. The installation of vanes improves the internal flow and gives the positive encouragement to the output power. For the power transmission to the outside of the turbine casing from the runner axis, a belt passage is designed in the inline casing, as its influence, the region after the belt passage shows a relatively low output power. The clearance gap in the runner side space is considered, in which a small volume of flow is contracted into the clearance gap, forming the leakage flow. The leakage flow leads to a decrease in the efficiency.

  • The formation and elongation of runners, growth of runner plants, and transplant propagation rates of 'Maehyang' strawberry were investigated at various photosynthetic photon flux (PPF) levels. Strawberry plants having $3.1{\pm}0.4$ leaves and $7.0{\pm}1.1mm$ of crown diameter were used as propagules and were cultured for 35 days in 9 transplant production modules using fluorescent lamps as artificial lighting sources. Applied PPF levels were $137.4{\pm}2.1$, $217.0{\pm}1.0$, and $274.7{\pm}8.4{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ as measured on the surfaces of empty shelves. The numbers of runners and runner plants per propagule were the greatest at $280{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$ PPF. The runner plant propagation rate was 0.27 plant/day/propagule at $280{\mu}mol{\cdot}m^{-2}{\cdot}s^{-1}$, which was significantly greater than that of conventional propagation methods. Results indicate that high PPF levels promotes the formation of runners and runner plants of strawberry and that the rapid propagation method with high PPF levels can be feasible for production of vigorous transplants in a closed transplant production system.

  • Nut fasteners that require ultra-precise control are required in the overall manufacturing industry including electronic products that are currently developing with the automobile industry. Important performance factors when tightening nuts include loosening due to insufficient fastening force, breakage due to excessive fastening, Tightening torque and angle are required to maintain and improve the assembling quality and ensure the life of the product. Nut fasteners, which are now marketed under the name Nut Runner, require high torque and precision torque control, precision angle control, and high speed operation for increased production, and are required for sophisticated torque control dedicated to high output BLDC motors and nut fasteners. It is demanded to develop a high-precision torque control driver and a high-speed, low-speed, high-response precision speed control system, but it does not satisfy the high precision, high torque and high speed operation characteristics required by customers. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a control technique of BLDC motor variable speed control and nut runner based on vector control and torque control based on coordinate transformation of d axis and q axis that can realize low vibration and low noise even at accurate tightening torque and high speed rotation. The performance results were analyzed to confirm that the proposed control satisfies the nut runner performance. In addition, it is confirmed that the pattern is programmed by One-Stage operation clamping method and it is tightened to the target torque exactly after 10,000 [rpm] high speed operation. The problem of tightening torque detection by torque ripple is also solved by using disturbance observer Respectively.

  • Semi-Solid Diecasters usually carry out the Semi-Solid diecasting experiments before producing new casts. At the Semi-Solid diecasting stages, the runner-gate part has been always repeatedly corrected, which leads to a tedious processing time and increased processing cost. A large amount of experience is essential in manual assessment and if the design is defective, much time and a great deal of efforts will be wasted in the modification of the die. In this study, design system has been developed based on design database. In addition, gate experiment for gating system design has been carried out to append the database. It is possible for engineers to make efficient gating system design of Semi-Solid diecasting and it will result in the reduction of expenses and time to be required. The detailed contents of the research are described in the followings. An attempt is made to link programs incorporating a number of expert design rules with the process variables obtained by commercial FVM softwares, MAGMAsoft, to form a useful package.

  • Low voltage circuit breakers are widely used in power distribution systems to interrupt fault current rapidly and to assure the reliability of the power supply. This paper is focused on understanding the interrupting capability, more specifically of the contacts and the arc runner, based on the shape of the contact system in the current molded case circuit breaker (hereafter MCCB). Moreover, in order to improve the interrupting capability of the circuit breaker, the estimation and analysis of the interrupting capability, based on the 3-D magnetic flux analysis, were developed. Furthermore, this paper also presents results of the estimation and analysis of the interrupting capability when applied to different model breakers. In addition, this paper analyzes the efficiency of the interrupting tests by forming false current paths consisting of a three-division cascade arc runner in the contact system. With regards to the interrupting test, there is a need to assure that the optimum design required to analyze the electromagnetic forces of the contact system generated by the current and flux density be present. Based on the results of this study, this paper presents both computational analysis and test results for the newly developed MCCB 460V/225A/50㎄ contact system.

  • Owing to the increasing number of intelligent homes(or called Smart home), the corresponding cost is much higher. Low voltage circuit breakers are widely used in the intelligent homes to interrupt fault current rapidly and to assure the reliability of the power supply. The distribution of magnetic field induced by arc current in the contact system of molded case circuit breaker(hereafter MCCB) depends on the shape, arrangement, and kinds of material of arc runner. This paper is focused on understanding the interrupting capability, more specifically of the arc runner, based on the shape of the contact system in the current MCCB. The magnetic driving force was calculated by using the flux densities induced by the arc current, which are obtained by three-dimensional finite element method. There is a need to assure that the optimum design required to analyze the electromagnetic forces of the contact system generated by current and the flux density be present. This is paper present our computational analysis on contact system in MCCB.
