Tsunami research in Korea: Part 1. Numerical analysis and laboratory experiments (우리나라의 지진해일 연구: Part 1. 수치해석과 수리실험)

  • Tsunamis that have occurred around the Pacific Ocean rim over the past decades have taken a heavy toll on lives of human beings and property. The Eastern Coast of the Korean Peninsula is not safe from sudden tsunami attacks and has sustained tsunami damage in the past. In this review, the past, present, and future of some aspects of tsunami research in Korea have been introduced extensively. Tsunamis in Korea, numerical model simulating tsunami behaviors and laboratory experiments will be discussed. In the compainion review, field surveys for domestics and overseas tsunami events, countermeasures against tsunami attacks, furture research topics and concluding remarks will be described.

Effect of Dietary KocetinTM on Meat Quality of Hanwoo Loin

  • This study was performed to determine the effects of dietary Kocetin$^{TM}$ on meat quality of Hanwoo (Korean native cattle) beef. Samples were divided into 3 groups; dietary supplementation of Kocetin$^{TM}$ (KC) at 21 and 42 ppm (n=4), and non-supplemented control (n=3) for 75 days. The KC composed of 10% of quercetin which was a bioactive compound. After slaughtering the Hanwoo, each loin from 10 Hanwoos were obtained and analyzed. Dietary supplementation of KC did not affect the final pH, water holding capacity, drip loss, cooking loss, surface color, total phenolics content, radical scavenging activity, and sensory scores. Dietary quercetin also showed no difference in both TBARS and VBN values. Textural profile analysis results also showed no difference, except for adhesiveness and springness. Springness was significantly higher in loin from Hanwoo treated by dietary KC at 42 ppm when compared to control. Results revealed that the loin from Hanwoo fed dietary KC up to 42 ppm (approximately 4.2 ppm of quercetin) was not sufficient to have clear positive effects on meat quality of loin.

CAE-based DFSS Study for Road Noise Reduction (Road Noise 개선을 위한 CAE 기반 DFSS Study)

  • In the early phase of vehicle development, CAE is conducted as tool for vehicle performance assessment. To maintain acceptable road noise performance, solution for reduced vehicle sensitivity is required. Chassis interface dynamic stiffness characteristics are key component to isolating vibration and noise of road from the vehicle interior. This research provide how to set up the optimized dynamic characteristics under noise effect through DFSS study. CAE-based DOE is performed to build prediction math model, CMS process involves DOE to achieve very fast run times while giving results very comparable. Minimized $95^{th}$ percentile of performance distribution is applied to minimize vehicle sensitivity and road noise levels variation during the optimization process. Finally, the results of optimization were reviewed for performance and robustness.

Experimental exergy assessment of ground source heat pump system

  • The principal intention of this experimental work is to confer upon the exergy study of GSHP associated with horizontal earth heat exchanger for space heating. The exergy analysis recognizes the assessment of the tendency of various energy flows and quantifies the extensive impression of inefficiencies in the system and its components. Consequently, this study intends to provide the enlightenment for well interpretation of exergy concept for GSHP. This GSHP system is composed of heat pump cycle, earth heat exchanger cycle and fan coil cycle. All the required data were measured and recorded when the experimental set up run at steady state and average of the measured data were used for exergy investigation purpose. In this study the rate at which exergy destructed at all the subsystems and system has been estimated using the analytical expression. The overall rational exergetic efficiency of the GSHP system was evaluated for estimating its effectiveness. Hence, we draw the exergy flow diagram by using the various calculated results. The result shows that in the whole system the maximum exergy destruction rate component was compressor and minimum exergy flow component was earth heat exchanger. Consequently, compressor and earth heat exchanger need to be pay more attention.

  • Present study aims to investigate draft effects on hydro-elastic response of pontoon type VLFS(Very Large Floating Structure). A three dimensional higher-order boundary element method(HOBEM: Hong et al;1999, Choi, Hong and Choi; 2001) is extended to analyze elastic response of structures. Intensive numerical calculations were carried out for box type structure to investigate the draft effect on hydrodynamic forces on pontoon type VLFS. Main attention was paid to wave run-up along the waterline for various cases of draft scantling. It is found that the draft effects on the hydro-elastic response of pontoon type VLFS are important especially in short wave range and shallow water region.

  • The purpose of this study was to compare of the kinematic variables from takeoff preparation to takeoff used by long jumpers who recorded over 8meters in 2002 Busan Asian Game and 2003 Daegu Universiade and 2001 national championship. The kinematic characteristics from the last three stride to takeoff at the takeoff board were analyzed such as velocities, heights and angles. The conclusion were as follows; In order to record over 8meters the national long jumpers should have under 5cm height variation at the penultimate stride of the run-up. In the approach phase the horizontal velocity of the jumpers should reach to 10m/s in touchdown at takeoff board The vertical velocity must have 3.75m/s simultaneously in order to record 8meters. The jumpers need to continue talent of the horizontal velocity in touchdown at takeoff board and require jumping power of the takeoff leg at takeoff board The appropriate body variation range ratio between takeoff and touchdown should be 1.2 vs 1 and the trunk angle at touch down on the board should be close to the erect posture for higher body flight.

Assessment of Needs for Housing Improvement of Children Group Homes in Cheongju through Interviews with Group Home Directors and Staffs (실무자 인터뷰를 통한 청주시 아동 그룹홈의 주거 개선 요구 조사)

  • The purpose of this study was to assess needs for housing improvement of children group homes in Cheongju-si through interviews with the group home directors and staffs. From April 6, 2018, to April 25, 2018, a series of face-to-face interviews with four directors and three staffs working in four children group homes was conducted. The results were analyzed using thematic analysis technique. Highlights of major findings and implications were as follow: (1) Bedroom: Needs for independent bedrooms and desks for each child were dominant. (2) Common activity space: Interviewees showed somewhat different opinions on common activity spaces according to group home types and/or between directors and staffs. (3) Between "a big and good-quality house" and "a house in good location", interviewees were found to prefer "a big and good-quality house" in order for children to have enough space to run and play. (4) Interviewees insisted that to provide proper group home services and protection similar to a real family, current policy to accommodate up to eight children in one group home should be improved.

A Qualitative Study on Korean Fashion Designer Brand Individuality Factors (국내 패션 디자이너 브랜드 개성 구성요인에 관한 질적 연구)

  • The domestic fashion industry of the middle and late 20th century emphasized the importance of a standardized design process; however, the values of differentiated brand individuality have become increasingly important with the qualitative·quantitative growth of designer brands. Therefore, paying attention to designer individuality (or a differentiated element of a designer brand growing up in the domestic fashion industry) this study reestablished factors of the designer brand individuality. An in-depth interview was conducted with 13 designers and consumers for empirical analysis. In order to identify concepts of designer individuality based on the theory of the brand personality by Aaker along with precedent studies, the study devised a theoretical frame to explain a conceptual structure of designer brand individuality as well as reestablish its factors as the designer individuality, design and non-design factors through empirical research. Empirical research derived the designer individuality factors as an external designer image, designer taste, design philosophy and designer personality. Design factors were derived as concept, working process and method, style and formativeness. Non-design factors were also extracted as wearing experience, wearer image, lookbook image, fashion shows and exhibitions. It is meaningful that little empirical research has been conducted on domestic fashion designers who actually run designer brands and that this study helped understand designer brands through a new approach called designer individuality.

  • 여러 분야의 연구자들이 지진해일의 위험에 대한 경각심을 가지고, 지진해일의 발생, 전파 그리고 수리현상을 해석하기 위해 많은 노력을 기울이고 있다. 해안지역에서 직접적인 피해를 입히는 지진해일의 충격파, 처오름, 월파, 침수 등에 관한 연구에 유사한 파형 특성을 가진 고립파를 많이 사용한다. 고립파는 비선형성과 분산이 균형을 이루는 가정에서 Korteweg-de Vries(KdV) 방정식을 만족하는 안정적인 이론파이다. 고립파의 파형분포는 수심에 의해 결정되고, 일정 수심 이상에서는 지진해일을 대신해 사용할 수 있다. 그러나 수심이 낮은 천해에서는 주기와 파장이 비현실적으로 짧아짐으로 지진해일을 대신하기에는 무리가 있다. 본 연구에서는 지진해일의 처오름 특성을 분석하기 위한 1:20 불투과성 경사면이 포함된 수치파동수조를 구성한다. 먼저, 일본 NOWPHAS(Nationwide Ocean Wave information network for Ports and HArbourS)의 관측자료를 이용하여 2011 동일본 지진해일과 고립파의 파형분포를 비교한다. 그리고 다양한 파형의 지진해일 생성할 수 있게 개발된 조파방법을 수치파동수조에 도입하여 수치해석을 수행한다. 수치해석결과, 지진해일의 처오름 높이가 고립파에 비해 최대 1.8배, 최소 1.13배, 평균 1.56배 증가한다.
