GPU-based Stereo Matching Algorithm with the Strategy of Population-based Incremental Learning

  • To solve the general problems surrounding the application of genetic algorithms in stereo matching, two measures are proposed. Firstly, the strategy of simplified population-based incremental learning (PBIL) is adopted to reduce the problems with memory consumption and search inefficiency, and a scheme for controlling the distance of neighbors for disparity smoothness is inserted to obtain a wide-area consistency of disparities. In addition, an alternative version of the proposed algorithm, without the use of a probability vector, is also presented for simpler set-ups. Secondly, programmable graphics-hardware (GPU) consists of multiple multi-processors and has a powerful parallelism which can perform operations in parallel at low cost. Therefore, in order to decrease the running time further, a model of the proposed algorithm, which can be run on programmable graphics-hardware (GPU), is presented for the first time. The algorithms are implemented on the CPU as well as on the GPU and are evaluated by experiments. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm offers better performance than traditional BMA methods with a deliberate relaxation and its modified version in terms of both running speed and stability. The comparison of computation times for the algorithm both on the GPU and the CPU shows that the former has more speed-up than the latter, the bigger the image size is.

  • Tsunamis that have occurred around the Pacific Ocean rim over the past decades have taken a heavy toll on lives of human beings and property. The Eastern Coast of the Korean Peninsula is not safe from sudden tsunami attacks and has sustained tsunami damage in the past. In this review, the past, present, and future of some aspects of tsunami research in Korea have been introduced extensively. Tsunamis in Korea, numerical model simulating tsunami behaviors and laboratory experiments will be discussed. In the compainion review, field surveys for domestics and overseas tsunami events, countermeasures against tsunami attacks, furture research topics and concluding remarks will be described.

CAE-based DFSS Study for Road Noise Reduction (Road Noise 개선을 위한 CAE 기반 DFSS Study)

  • In the early phase of vehicle development, CAE is conducted as tool for vehicle performance assessment. To maintain acceptable road noise performance, solution for reduced vehicle sensitivity is required. Chassis interface dynamic stiffness characteristics are key component to isolating vibration and noise of road from the vehicle interior. This research provide how to set up the optimized dynamic characteristics under noise effect through DFSS study. CAE-based DOE is performed to build prediction math model, CMS process involves DOE to achieve very fast run times while giving results very comparable. Minimized $95^{th}$ percentile of performance distribution is applied to minimize vehicle sensitivity and road noise levels variation during the optimization process. Finally, the results of optimization were reviewed for performance and robustness.

  • It is important to research and understand the physical phenomenon around a semi-submersible offshore structure on waves and currents because the wave run-up and load occurs owing to the waves and currents. In this study, the numerical simulations are performed about flow around a fixed semi-submersible offshore structure. The Modified Marker-density method is adopted in the present computation procedure, this method is one of the various methods to define the free-surface. The present computation results are compared with existing experimental and numerical simulation(VOF method) results. And, the computation results are relatively coincident with the existing results of model test and numerical simulation by VOF method.

A Study about Preventing Improper Working of Equipment on ATS System by Signaling Equipment (신호장치에 의한 ATS 신호장치 오동작 방지에 대한 연구)

  • Promotion of the line no.2 in Seoul Metro was changing from the existing signaling facilities for ATS(Automatic Train Stop) vehicles to the up-to-date signaling facilities for ATO(Automatic Train Operation). But, in consequence of conducting a trial run after being equipped with the ATO signaling facilities, the matter related to mix-operation with the existing ATS signaling facilities appeared. The operation of the existing ATS signaling system in combination with the ATO signaling system has made improper working related to frequency recognition of the ATS On-board Computerized Equipment. This obstructs operation of a working ATS vehicle. That is, as barring operation of an ATS vehicle that should proceed, it may make the proceeding ATS vehicle stop suddenly and after all, it will cause safety concerns. In this paper, we designed a wayside track occupancy detector that previously prevents improper working related to frequency recognition of the ATS On-board Computerized Equipment by gripping classification and working processes of operating trains throughout transmission of local signaling information from the existing facilities, which does not need to change or replace the existing signaling facilities. Furthermore, we described general characteristics of the wayside track occupancy detector and modeled the IFC(InterFace Contrivance) device and the logical circuit recognizing signal information. Then, we made an application program of PLC(programmable Logic Computer) based on the stated model. We, in relation to data transfer method, used the frame in TCP/IP transfer mode as the standard, and we demonstrated that ATO transmission frequency is intercepted.

Speaker Tracking Using Eigendecomposition and an Index Tree of Reference Models

  • This paper focuses on online speaker tracking for telephone conversations and broadcast news. Since the online applicability imposes some limitations on the tracking strategy, such as data insufficiency, a reliable approach should be applied to compensate for this shortage. In this framework, a set of reference speaker models are used as side information to facilitate online tracking. To improve the indexing accuracy, adaptation approaches in eigenvoice decomposition space are proposed in this paper. We believe that the eigenvoice adaptation techniques would help to embed the speaker space in the models and hence enrich the generality of the selected speaker models. Also, an index structure of the reference models is proposed to speed up the search in the model space. The proposed framework is evaluated on 2002 Rich Transcription Broadcast News and Conversational Telephone Speech corpus as well as a synthetic dataset. The indexing errors of the proposed framework on telephone conversations, broadcast news, and synthetic dataset are 8.77%, 9.36%, and 12.4%, respectively. Using the index tree structure approach, the run time of the proposed framework is improved by 22%.

Numerical Analysis of Runup and Wave Force Acting on Coastal Revetment and Onshore Structure due to Tsunami (해안안벽과 육상구조물에서 지진해일파의 처오름 및 작용파력에 관한 수치해석)

  • In this work, wave run-up heights and resultant wave forces on a vertical revetment due to tsunami (solitary wave) are investigated numerically using a numerical wave tank model called CADMAS-SURF (CDIT, 2001. Research and Development of Numerical Wave Channel (CADMAS-SURF). CDIT library, No. 12, Japan.), which is based on a 2-D Navier-Stokes solver, coupled to a volume of fluid (VOF) method. The third order approximate solution (Fenton, 1972. A ninth-order solution for the solitary wave. J. of Fluid Mech., Vol. 53, No.2, pp.257-271) is used to generate solitary waves and implemented in original CADMAS-SURF code. Numerical results of the wave profiles and forces are in good agreements with available experimental data. Using the numerical results, the regression curves determined from the least-square analysis are proposed, which can be used to determine the maximum wave run-up height and force on a vertical revetment due to tsunami. In addition, the capability of CADMAS-SURF is demonstrated for tsunami wave forces acting on an onshore structure using various configuration computations including the variations of the crown heights of the vertical wall and the position of the onshore structure. Based on the numerical results such as water level, velocity field and wave force, the direct effects of tsunami on an onshore structure are discussed.

  • Portable navigation markets grew up to 95% last year. This study aims to develop a business model for pedestrian-oriented portable navigator for street shoppers. Related previous studies developed successfully the alogrithm for a portable navigator, and the current study seeks for diverse ways to turn this system into a new type of on & off line-based LBS business. The business model proposed in this study adopted two different approaches of benefit yields based on the structural analysis of so-called Wanavi navigation system. One is segmented approach seeking for benefits from each individual system component such as communication network, contents, and platform. The other approach is to run the business by integrating relevant system componts in every possible way to attract customers to this portable navigator. The purpose of this proposal is not limited to activate emerging walking navigator markets, but to aim at creating idealistic free market system where all the shoppers are furnished complete market information to the fullest extent when they go on shopping.

Experimental Study on Behavior of Green Water for Rectangular Structure (사각형 해양구조물의 청수현상 발생과정에 대한 실험적 연구)

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the behavior of green water on a structure with a rectangular cross section under wave conditions, along with the flow characteristics in bubbly water flow. An experiment was conducted in a two-dimensional wave flume using an acrylic model (1/125) of FPSO BW Pioneer operating in the Gulf of Mexico under its design wave condition. The occurrence of green water, including its development, in front of the model was captured using a high-speed Charge Coupled Device (CCD) camera with the shadowgraph technique. Using consecutive images, the generation procedure for green water on the model was divided into five phases: flip through, air entrapment, wave run-up, wave overturning, and water shipping. In addition, the distinct water elevations of the green water were defined as the height of flip through, height of splashing jet, and height of freeboard exceedance, and showed a linear relationship with the incoming wave height.
