To enhance the rule-based reasoning capability of Semantic Web, the XRML (eXtensible Rule Markup Language) approach embraces the meta-information necessary for the extraction of explicit rules from Web pages and its maintenance. To effectuate the automatic identification of rules from unstructured texts, this research develops a framework of using rule ontology. The ontology can be acquired from a similar site first, and then can be used for multiple sites in the same domain. The procedure of ontology-based rule identification is regarded as a graph search problem with incomplete nodes, and an A* algorithm is devised to solve the problem. The procedure is demonstrated with the domain of shipping rates and return policy comparison portal, which needs rule based reasoning capability to answer the customer's inquiries. An example ontology is created from Amazon.com, and is applied to the many online retailers in the same domain. The experimental result shows a high performance of this approach.

This paper proposes a Expert CAPP System for integrating CAD/CAM of rotational work-part by rule based approach. The CAD/CAPP integration is performed by the recognition of machined features from the 2-D CAD data (IGES) file. Selecting functions of the process planning are performed in modularized rule base by forward chaining inference, and operation sequences are determined by means of heuristic search algorithm. For CAPP/CAM integration, post-processor generates NC code from route sheet file. This system coded in OPS5 and C language on PC/AT, and EMCO CNC lathe interfaced with PC through DNC and RS-232C.

With the proliferation of WWW, providing more intelligence to Web sites has become a major concern in e-business industry. In recent days, this trend is more accelerated by prosperity of CRM (Customer Relationship Management) in terms of various aspects such as product recommendation, self after service, etc. To accomplish this goal, many e-companies are eager to embed web enabled rule-based system, that is, expert systems into their Web sites and several well-known commercial tools are already available in the market. Most of those tools are developed based on CGI so far but CGI based systems inherently suffer over-burden problem when there are too many service demands at the same time due to the nature of CGI. To overcome this limitation of the existing CGI based expert systems, we propose a new form of Web-enabled expert system using hyperlink-based inference mechanism. In terms of burden to Web server, our approach is proven to outperform CGI based approach theoretically and also empirically. For practical purpose, our this approach is implemented in a software system, WeBIS and a graphic rule editing methodology, Expert Diagram is incorporated into the system to facilitates rule generation and maintenance. WeBIS is now successfully operated for financial consulting in the web site of a leading financial consulting company in Korea.

Conventional rule-based approaches have some problems caused by rule maintenance. Also they have some limitations to get the high quality translation results. This paper presents new English-Korean transfer approach that uses patterns and examples on limited domains. The use of patterns and examples can resolve the ambiguities and give high quality of MT Proposed approach can be applied in various NLP related area. Experimental results with a test corpus are discussed.

For determination of black-out area and restoration area by an expert system for fault section estimation and power system restoration using information from circuit breakers, it is necessary that the recognition of system isolation state and a method of finding the change of system isolation state by the state transition of breakers in isolated system. This paper presents a method of resolving the above problem by rule-based approach.

After the introduction of the topologically structured geographic information system(GIS) with relational DBMS, the attribute data can be handled without considering locational data. By utilzing of the characteristic of the relational DBMS, it can be used as an expert system building tool in GIS. The relational DBMS of the GIS furnishes the data needed to perform deductive functions of the expert system, and the rule based approach provides the decision rules. Therefore, rule based approach with the expert judgement can be easily combined with relational DBMS.

In this paper we present compiler-based active rule system to efficiently maintain spatial integrity constraints in a heterogeneous, distributed environment. Specially, the prototype active rule system presented has been developed as a component of a whole middleware system called SDBC(Spatile DataBase Connectivity). Due to this reason, our active rule system is provided for heterogeneous ODBMSs in a distributed environment and used to define spatial integrity constraints using the active rules in E-C-A(Event-Condition-Action) type. Using this active rule system, an application programmer can free himself from a heavier burden on the integrity maintenance of application objects. In the compiler-based approach, active rules applicable to events raised by a database program are directly inserted into the program in a function type by the preprocessor, and then they are compiled with the application program source codes. One advantage of this approach is that there is no run-time overhead accompanied by monitoring all the database transitions when preprocessed program is executed. This active rule system also provides facilities to manage changed rules and dynamically interpret those rules at run-tuime.

Customization and personalization services are considered as a critical success factor to be a successful Internet store or web service provider. As a representative personalization technique, personalized recommendation techniques are studied and commercialized to suggest products or services to a customer of Internet storefronts based on demographics of the customer or based on an analysis of the past purchasing behavior of the customer. The underlining theories of recommendation techniques are statistics, data mining, artificial intelligence, and/or rule-based matching. In the rule-based approach for personalized recommendation, marketing rules for personalization are usually collected from marketing experts and are used to inference with customers data. however, it is difficult to extract marketing rules from marketing experts, and also difficult to validate and to maintain the constructed knowledge base. In this paper, we proposed a marketing rule extraction technique for personalized recommendation on Internet storefronts using market basket analysis technique, a well-known data mining technique. Using marketing basket analysis technique, marketing rules for cross sales are extracted, and are used to provide personalized advertisement selection when a customer visits in an Internet store. An experiment has been performed to evaluate the effectiveness of proposed approach comparing with preference scoring approach and random selection.

Owing to the nature of locality in mask layouts, it appears that most mask layout problems can be solved by transforming a part of the given mask layout into a better layout segment continuously toward a global suboptimal solution. This notion of local transformation addresses major weak points of existing mask layout processing systems, which lack both extensibility and unifiability. This paper attempts to elaborate upon developing a new rule-based mask layout transformation system wherein most of the mask layout problems can be solved under the unified framework of local mask layout transformation. The rule-based mask layout transformation system is applicable to various mask layout problems such as net extraction, mask layout compaction, mask layout editing, and design rule checking. The experimental results show that the rule-based expert system approach is an efficient means of solving those mask layout problems, and thus confronting major drawbacks of existing layout processing systems.

We developed a methodology of rule acquisition from texts such as Web pages which utilizes ontology in identification of rule components. We expect that the proposed methodology can reduce the bottleneck of rule acquisition and contribute to the utilization of rule based systems. As parts of our research, we designed an ontology for rule acquisition named OntoRule and proposed a rule acquisition methodology through OntoXRML which is an acquisition tool using OntoRule. Also, we evaluated our approach by calculating missed recommendations and wrong recommendations of rule components in rule acquisition experiments over three online bookstores.
