  • Organo bifunctional silane (TESPD) is added into silica containing NR and its effects are investigated with respect to the vulcanization properties, the processability, and the physical properties. The addition of the TESPD into silica filled NR compound increases the degree of crosslinking by formation of a strong 3-dimensional network structure with silica surface via coupling reaction, which results in an improved mechanical property. It also improves the processabilities compared to the Control compound.

  • Crosslink density of a rubber vulcanizate determines the chemical and physical properties, while bound rubber is an important factor to estimate reinforcement of a filled rubber compound. Extender oil is added to a raw rubber with very high molecular weight for improving processability of a rubber composite. Influence of extender oil on crosslink density, bound rubber formation, and physical properties of solution styrene-butadiene rubber (SSBR) composites with differing microstructures was investigated. Crosslink densities of non-oil-extended SSBR (NO-SSBR) vulcanizates were higher than those of oil-extended SSBR (OE-SSBR) ones. Bound rubber contents of NO-SSBR compounds were also greater than those of OE-SSBR ones. The experimental results could be explained by interfering of extender oil. The OE-SSBR vulcanizates had low modulus but long elongation at break, whereas the NO-SSBR ones had high modulus but short elongation at break. It was found that the crosslink densities affected the physical properties more than the bound rubber contents. The moduli increased with increase in the crosslink density irrespective of extender oil, while the elongation at break decreased. Each variation of the tensile strengths of NO-SSBR and OE-SSBR vulcanizates with the crosslink density showed a decreasing trend. Tear strength of the OE-SSBR vulcanizate increased with increase in the crosslink density, whereas variation of the tear strength of NO-SSBR vulcanizate with the crosslink density showed a weak decreasing trend.

  • Effects of type and loading level of process aids on the rheological and mechanical properties of styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) compound were investigated. Five commercial grades of process aids composed of fatty acids and their various derivatives such as metal salts, esters, alcohols and amides were selected. The reduction in Mooney and shear viscosities was higher for metal salt-type process aids but lower for the process aids containing high molecular weight fatty acid alcohols and esters with increasing the loading of process aids. Tensile modulus generally decreased, while heat-build-up increased with increased process aids content. No considerable effect was observed for ulimate properties such as tensile strength and elongation at break.

  • Acrylic rubber was synthesized using ethyl acrylate. butyl acrylate, methoxyethyl acrylate as main monomers and glycidyl methacrylate as cure site monomer by emulsion polymerization. Rubber compound was made by adding 2,2-bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl]propane as crosslinking agent. Increase of ethyl acrylate content in the main monomer ratio resulted in enhancement of heat resistance due to decrease of glass transition temperature in acrylic rubber. And also oil resistance was increased with increasing content of ethyl acrylate because ethyl acrylate has the highest ester concentration in the three main monomers. With content of 2,2-bis[4-(4-aminophenoxy)phenyl]propane, both tensile strength and elongation were increased until 2 phr, but in higher content than that, they decreased owing to reduction of viscosity and elongation by increase of crosslinking density.

  • The silica-silica interaction parameter (${\alpha}_F$) of the silane treated silica filled natural rubber (NR) compound was investigated. The measured ${\alpha}_F$ values using mass fraction method following Wolff's theory were compared with volume fraction method. As silica concentration increased, the ${\alpha}_F$ value increased for both methods. The value of ${\alpha}_F$ expressed as volume fraction was higher than that of mass fraction, which resulted in large gaps between ${\alpha}_F$ values. The effect of accelerator (MBT) concentration on ${\alpha}_F$ values was compared.

  • In this study, diethylaminoethyl methacrylate-styrene-butadiene terpolymer (DEAEMA-SBR), in which diethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DEAEMA) was introduced to the SBR molecule as a third monomer, was synthesized by cold emulsion polymerization. It is expected that amine group introduced to a rubber molecule would improve dispersion of silica by the formation of hydrogen bond (or ionic coupling) between the amine group and silanol groups of silica surface. The chemical structure of DEAEMA-SBR was analyzed using proton nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (H-NMR), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Then, various properties of DEAEMA-SBR/silica composite such as crosslink density, bound rubber content, abrasion resistance, and mechanical properties were evaluated. As a result, bound rubber content and crosslink density of DEAEMA-SBR/silica compound were higher than those of the SBR 1721 composite. Abrasion resistance and moduli at 300% elongation of the DEAEMA-SBR/silica composite were better than those of SBR 1721 composite due to the high bound rubber content and crosslink density. These results are attributed to high affinity between DEAEMA-SBR and silica. The proposed study suggests that DEAEMA-SBR can help to improve mechanical properties and abrasion resistance of the tire tread part.

  • In this study, to overcome a complicated shoe adhesion process such as buffing, pre-treatment by primer in the rubber component of the shoe, we studied adhesion mechanical properties with rubber compound added water-soluble salt for the purpose of improving the adhesion between midsole and outsole. Acid salts, basic salt and neutral salts were evaluated, rubber containing basic salts showed excellent adhesion to water-based adhesion. Since the basic salt is present as the hydroxy salt, the surface of rubber is hydrophilized. The results are confirmed by contact angle and IR spectroscopy measurement. In addition, in the case of rubber compound added basic salts, NBS abrasion resistance and hardness were increased by increasing crosslink density, but crosslink time was delayed.

  • The influences of carbon black loading and cure type on the cure characteristics including kinetics and dynamic mechanical properties were investigated for a styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). The rate constants of accelerated sulfur vulcanization reaction at three different temperatures were determined using a cure rheometer, and they were compared with those from the direct measurement of sulfur concentration. The strain softening behavior under dynamic deformation, known as the Payne effect was also discussed depending on the carbon black loading and cure type.

  • In this study, we carried out the evaluation of EPDM(Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) reclaimed rubber mixing with natural rubber at various mixing ratio to reuse as rubber filler. The scorch time and moony viscosity was analyzed to evaluate the effect of cure behavior. And also, we analyzed the tensile strength, the elongation at break and cure time to evaluate the variation of cure behavior. As the results, the scorch time and optimal cure time was decreased according to the increasing of EPDM reclaimed rubber. However, the moony viscosity was increased at each mixing ratio. In case of the added EPDM reclaimed rubber was 20 phr(parts by weight per 100 parts by weight of rubber), the hardness and specific gravity was increased a little. The hardness and specific gravity was increased in rapidly under 40 phr of the added EPEM reclaimed rubber. The tensile strength and elongation at break of the compound of natural and EPDM reclaimed rubber was rapidly decreased compared with its natural rubber when the ratio of adding EPDM reclaimed rubber was over 40 phr.

  • Low molecular weight polybutadiene (liquid BR) improves the filler dispersion in a silica-filled styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) compound. In the present work, influence of molecular weight or the liquid BR on properties of a silica-filled SBR compound was studied. Minimum and maximum torques in the rheocurve for the compound containing the liquid BR with higher molecular weight (HLBR) are lower than those for the compound containing the liquid BR with lower one (LLBR) while the delta torques are nearly the same. Mooney scorch time of the compound containing HLBR is faster than that of the compound containing LLBR. Modulus or the compound containing HLBR is lower than that of the compound containing LLBR while tensile strength of the former is higher than that of the latter. The elongation at break of the former is also longer than that of the latter. Stability for the thermal aging at $90^{\circ}C$ for 3 days is less favorable for the former than for the latter.
