A Study on Adhesion Friction Characteristics of Rubber for Tire Tread

  • Rubber friction properties include adhesion friction characteristics of the interface, hysteresis friction characteristics originating from repeated rubber deformations, and cohesion friction characteristics due to wear and tear. Cohesion friction is generally sufficiently small (< 3%) that it can be ignored, whereas adhesion friction has a relatively large contribution of 15%, but has not been investigated thoroughly. Therefore, through an adhesion friction study, the adhesion mechanism was examined and the relationship between friction characteristics and adhesion friction on dry surfaces was derived. The wet grip characteristics of tread rubber are fully described by the hysteresis characteristics of tires, but friction characteristics on dry roads are difficult to determine without adhesion factors. The results presented herein demonstrate that the combination of hysteresis and adhesion properties in the tread rubber sufficiently explained the characteristics of the dry grip. Based on the results of this study, technologies will be developed to determine the key factors governing adhesion friction characteristics and improve dry tire braking performance.

RFL 프라이머 처리에 따른 폴리케톤 코드사와 고무 간의 계면접착성 변화에 열노화가 미치는 영향 (Effect of Thermal Aging on the Change of Interfacial Adhesion between Polyketone Cord and Rubber by RFL Primer Treatment)

  • In the case of fiber/rubber composites for tire applications, the interfacial adhesion between fiber and rubber significantly affects the physical properties of the finished products. Generally, organic synthetic fibers used for tire cords are treated with resorcinol formaldehyde latex(RFL) primer on the surface of the fiber to improve the adhesion to rubber. Changes of adhesion between rubber and tire cords might weaken as temperature rises due to overheating of car engine and friction with road. In this study, the effects of temperature on the primer treated polyketone cord/rubber composites and the changes in interfacial adhesion were investigated. Polyketone cord/rubber composites were prepared after RFL solution treatment on the surface of polyketone fibers. After that, composites was thermally aged at different temperature conditions(60, 80, 100, $120^{\circ}C$) and times(1, 5, 10, 15days). The adhesion strength of polyketone cord/rubber composite treated with RFL primer was higher than untreated composite by more than 3 times. After heat aging, the adhesion strength of untreated polyketone cord/rubber composites increased while the RFL treated polyketone cord/rubber composites decreased somewhat.

  • 본 연구에서는 아연 코팅 스틸코드와 접착증진제가 적용된 배합고무와의 접착 특성을 연구하였다. 접착증진제로는 cobalt boroacylate (코발트 염), resorcinol-formaldehyde resin (RF resin) 그리고 hexamethoxymethylmelamine (HMMM)을 사용하였다. 코발트 염이 첨가된 배합고무에서는 코발트 염이 아연 코팅 스틸코드 표면에서 아연 황화물 성장을 촉진시켜 코발트 염이 포함되지 않은 배합고에 비하여 pullout force가 증가하는 것을 확인하였다. 또한 코발트 염, RF resin과 HMMM을 모두 적용한 배합고무의 경우, 코발트 염은 아연 황화물 성장을 촉진시키고, RF resin과 HMMM은 배합고무의 modulus를 높여 고무 matrix로 성장한 아연 황화물을 더 강하게 interlocking하기 때문에 pullout force와 스틸코드의 고무 부착율이 가장 높게 나타난다는 것을 확인하였다.

수용성염에 의한 고무의 접착특성 및 기계적 강도 (A Study on Adhesion of Mechanical Properties of Rubber by Water-soluble salt)

  • 본 연구는 신발의 겉창인 고무 접착공정에서 버핑, 산, 알칼리 프라이머 전처리 공정을 생략하여 공정의 간소화로 생산 효율을 높이기 위해 수용성염을 포함하는 고무에 대한 접착특성과 기계적 특성을 고찰하였다. 산성염, 염기성염, 중성염을 평가한 결과, 염기성염을 포함된 고무 성형물의 경우 수성 접착제에 대해 우수한 접착효과를 보였다. 이는 염기성염이 하이드로옥시염으로 존재함에 따라 고무표면이 친수화 되면서 수성접착제에 우수한 접착효과를 보였다. 이것은 접촉각 및 IR측정으로 확인할 수 있었다. 또한, 염기성염이 포함된 고무 성형물의 경우 가교밀도가 증가되어 마모 특성 및 경도는 증가하지만 가교시간을 지연시키는 요인으로 작용하였다.

Study on the Adhesive Properties of Polyesters Reinforcing Materials

  • Polyester cord yarns have been treated in an atmospheric-pressure nitrogen plasma reactor in order to enhance their adhesion to rubber. A thin layer or the plasma was generated in the close vicinity of the yam surface using various types or surface discharge. To assess the effect of the plasma treatment on fiber surface properties, the cord thread/rubber matrix adhesion values measured using the untreated and threads cord threads were compared. The static and dynamic adhesion of the cord thread to rubber was characterized by using the standard Henley test. The dynamic adhesion values for the reference and plasma treated fiber were $7,3{\pm}1,2\;N$ and $83,5{\pm}3,5\;N$. The surface properties were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy and electron spin resonance spectroscopy. It is concluded that both polar group interactions and increased surface area of the fibers are responsible for the improved adhesive strength.

  • Kevlar was chemically surface modified with resorcinol-formaldehyde(RF) prepolymer and VP rubber latex for application to high strength tirecords. RF prepolymer was easily obtained by polymerization at room temperature in the presence of a base catalyst. The mechanical and thermal properties of Kevlar were not significantly changed during surface treated under various conditions. The change of adhesion with rubber were investigated through H-test method. Maximum increase of adhesion force between rubber and Kevlar was obtained up to 40% than that of untreated one when the fiber was soaked in RFL dipping solution and thermally treated at $170^{\circ}C$ for 3 - 5min.

Interfaces Between Rubber and Metallic or Textile Tire Cords

  • Bonding metal and textile components to rubber has always posed a problem. In this paper, an attempt had been made to modify textile and metal surfaces for bonding with rubber. The metal surfaces were modified using silane coupling agents and textile fibers were modified using plasma polymerization techniques. Some results on adhesion of metals to a range of sulfur-cured rubber compounds using a combination of organofunctional silanes are given here. The treatment was not only effective for high-sulfur compounds but also for low-sulfur com pounds as used in engine mounts and even for some semi-EV compounds. Coatings of plasmapolymerized pyrrole or acetylene were deposited on aramid and polyester tire cords. Standard pull-out force adhesion measurements were used to determine adhesion of tire cords to rubber compounds. The plasma coatings were characterized by various techniques and the performance results are explained in an interpenetrating network model.

거칠기에 따른 반도전-절연 계면층에서 접착특성과 절연성능 (Adhesion and Electrical Performance by Roughness on Semiconductive-Insulation Interface Layer of Silicone Rubber)

  • In this paper, the effect of adhesion properties of semiconductive-insulating interface layer of silicone rubber on electrical properties was investigated. Surface structure and adhesion of semiconductive silicon rubber by surface asperity was obtained from SEM and T-peel test. In addition, ac breakdown test was carried out for elucidating the change of electrical property by roughness treatment. From the results, Adhesive strength of semiconductive-insulation interface was increased with surface asperity. Dielectric breakdown strength by surface asperity decreased than initial Specimen, but increased from Sand Paper #1200. According to the adhesional strength data unevenness and void formed on the silicone rubber interface expand the surface area and result in improvement of adhesion. Before treatment Sand Paper #1200, dielectric breakdown strength was decreased by unevenness and void which are causing to have electric field mitigation small. After the treatment, the effect of adhesion increased dielectric breakdown strength. It is found that ac dielectric breakdown strength was increased with improving the adhesion between the semiconductive and insulating interface.

  • 철판에 도금한 아연을 구리이온으로 치환하는 치환도금법과 철판에 직접 구리를 증착하는 진공증착법으로 두께가 다른 구리박막 피복철판을 제조하여 배합고무와 접착성질을 조사하였다. 구리박막 피복철판과 배합고무의 접착세기는 제조방법에 관계없이 구리박막 두께에 따라 결정되었다. 구리박막이 75 nm보다 얇으면 안정한 접착층이 형성되어 황동판에 못지 않게 고무와 강하게 접착되었으나, 90 nm보다 두터우면 구리황화물이 지나치게 성정하여 접착세기가 약하였다.

  • 본 연구는 신발의 겉창용 고무 접착공정에서 버핑, 고무 프라이머 처리 등 전처리 공정을 생략하여 공정의 간소화로 생산효율을 높이기 위하여 $MgCl_2$가 포함된 고무 성형물에 대한 접착특성과 기계적 특성을 고찰하였다. $MgCl_2$함량 별로 평가한 결과, $MgCl_2$가 포함된 고무 성형물의 경우 수성 접착제에 대해 우수한 접착효과를 보였다. 이는 $MgCl_2$가 물에 녹는 염 인 것을 감안했을 때 일어나는 현상이라 판단했고, 접촉각 과 표면분석 측정으로 결과를 확인하였다. 또한, $MgCl_2$가 포함된 고무 성형물의 경우 가교효율이 증가되어 마모 특성이 증가하는 현상을 볼 수 있었다.
