  • WSN is composed of a lot of small sensors with the limited hardware resources. In WSN, at the initial stage, sensor nodes are randomly deployed over the region of interest, and self-configure the clustered networks by grouping a bunch of sensor nodes and selecting a cluster header among them. Specially, in Mobile-WSN environment, in which the administrator's intervention is restricted, the self-configuration capability is essential to establish a power-conservative Mobile-WSN which provides broad sensing coverage and communication coverage. In this paper, we propose a self-configuration routing protocol for Mobile-WSN, which consists of step-wise novel protocols for initial deployment, effective joining and removal of sensor nodes, which result in reducing overall power consumption, and extending the lifetime of network.

  • This paper proposes a modified end-to-end secure low energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (ME-LEACH) algorithm for enhancing the lifetime of a wireless sensor network (WSN). Energy limitations are a major constraint in WSNs, hence every activity in a WSN must efficiently utilize energy. Several protocols have been introduced to modulate the way a WSN sends and receives information. The end-to-end secure low energy adaptive clustering hierarchy (E-LEACH) protocol is a hierarchical routing protocol algorithm proposed to solve high-energy dissipation problems. Other methods that explore the presence of the most powerful nodes on each cluster as cluster heads (CHs) are the sparsity-aware energy efficient clustering (SEEC) protocol and an energy efficient clustering-based routing protocol that uses an enhanced cluster formation technique accompanied by the fuzzy logic (EERRCUF) method. However, each CH in the E-LEACH method sends data directly to the base station causing high energy consumption. SEEC uses a lot of energy to identify the most powerful sensor nodes, while EERRCUF spends high amounts of energy to determine the super cluster head (SCH). In the proposed method, a CH will search for the nearest CH and use it as the next hop. The formation of CH chains serves as a path to the base station. Experiments were conducted to determine the performance of the ME-LEACH algorithm. The results show that ME-LEACH has a more stable and higher throughput than SEEC and EERRCUF and has a 35.2% better network lifetime than the E-LEACH algorithm.

  • Many researches in wireless sensor networks have used a geographic routing to effectively disseminate data between sinks and sources. To know the location information, the geographic routing has proposed two manners. A sink-initiated and a source-initiated are flooding to disseminate its location information in WSN. However, these two manners have two problems. Firstly, whenever they move, they flood their location information. Secondly, their location information is disseminated unnecessary nodes besides nodes which send and receive data in actually. Therefore, this paper proposes a protocol that can solve the two problems and disseminate effectively data between few sinks and few sources. The proposed protocol exploits a location information manager that manages location information of the sinks and the sources. We also compare the performance of the proposed protocol with the existing protocols through a simulation.

  • This paper describes an IEEE 802.15.4-based hierarchical sensor network model for a VAWS(Vehicle Approach Warning System) which provides the drivers of vehicles approaching a sharp turn with the information about vehicles approaching the same turn from the opposite end. In the proposed network model, a tree-structured topology, that can prolong the lifetime of network is formed in a self-organizing manner by a topology control protocol. A simple but efficient routing protocol, that creates and maintains routing tables based on the network topology organized by the topology control protocol, transports data packets generated from the sensor nodes to the base station which then forwards it to a display processor. These protocols are designed as a network layer extension to the IEEE 802.15.4 MAC. In the simulation, which models a scenario with a sharp turn, it is shown that the proposed network model achieves a high-level performance in terms of both energy efficiency and throughput simultaneously.

  • Wireless sensor networks are being used in various fields. Wireless sensor networks are applied in many areas, such as security, military detection, environmental management, industrial control, and home automation. There is a problem about the limit of energy that the sensor network basically has. In this paper, we propose the LEACH-CCBD (Low Energy Adaptive Clustering hierarchy - Centrailized with Cluster and Basestation Distance) algorithm that uses energy efficiently by improving network transmission based on LEACH-C among the representative routing protocols. The LEACH-CCBD algorithm is a method of assigning a cluster head to a cluster head by comparing the sum of the distance from the member node to the cluster distance and the distance from the cluster node to the base station with respect to the membership of the member nodes in the cluster when configuring the cluster. The proposed LEACH-CCBD used Matlab simulation to confirm the performance results for each protocol. As a result of the experiment, as the lifetime of the network increased, it was shown to be superior to the LEACH and LEACH-C algorithms.

  • In a wireless network environment, since sensors are not always connected to power, the life of a battery, which is an energy source supplied to sensors, is limited. Therefore, various studies have been conducted to extend the network life, and a layer-based routing protocol, LEACH(: Low-energy Adaptive Clustering Hierarchy), has emerged for efficient energy use. However, the LEACH protocol, which transmits fused data directly to the sink node, has a limitation in that it consumes as much energy as the square of the transmission distance when transmitting data. To improve these limitations, this paper proposes an algorithm that can minimize the transmission distance with multi-hop transmission where cluster heads are chained between cluster heads through relative distance calculation from sink nodes in every round.

  • In recent years, the requirements on the high quality environment monitoring by using the sensor nodes which can handle the multimedia data in WSN have been increased. However, because the volume of multimedia data is tremendous, the limited bandwidth of a wireless channel may incur the bottleneck of a system. To solve such a problem, most of the existing distributed multi-path routing protocols based on multimedia data just focused on overcoming the limited bandwidth in order to enhance the energy efficiency and the transmission rate. However, because the existing methods can not apply a key-based technique to encrypt the multimedia data, they are very weak for the security. In this paper, we propose a secure disjointed multipath routing scheme for multimedia data transmission. Since our proposed scheme divides multimedia data(eg. image) into pixels and sends them through disjointed multipath routing, it can provide security to the whole network without using the key-based method. Our experimental results show that our proposed scheme reduces about 10% the amount of the energy consumption and about 65% the amount of the missed data packets caused by malicious nodes over the existing methods on average.

  • Mobile nodes in ad-hoc wireless networks play roles of router as well as host. Movement of nodes causes network topology changes, which make existing routing information be modified. Therefore many routing protocols for ad-hoc networks were suggested in the literature. In this paper, we suggest an enhanced automatic route shortening method for dynamic source routing(DSR) protocol. DSR is a request/response based protocol which has low routing overhead owing to node movement. The current automatic route shortening is performed on the only nodes which belong to the source route of packets. On the contrary, our suggested method allows all neighbor nodes hearing the packet to participate in automatic route shortening. It makes all possible route shortenings be performed. So we maintain maximal shortened routes of ongoing data connections. Simulation results with ns2 show that our method pays small extra protocol overhead for ARS, but increases the ratio of successful packet transmissions and the number of ARSs performed in our mechanism is from 2 to 5 times higher than in original ARS mechanism and therefore it will improve the network-wide energy consumption in wireless ad-hoc networks.

  • Most ad-hoc routing protocols such as AODV(Ad Hoc On-Demand Distance Vector) and DSR(Dynamic Source Routing) do not try to search for new routes if the network topology does not change. Hence, with low node mobility, traffic may be concentrated on several nodes, which results in long end-to-end delay due to congestion at the nodes. Furthermore, since some specific nodes are continuously used for long duration, their battery power may be rapidly exhausted. Expiration of nodes causes connections traversing the nodes to be disrupted and makes many routing requests be generated at the same time. Therefore, we propose a load balancing approach called Simple Load-balancing Approach (SLA), which resolves the traffic concentration problem by allowing each node to drop RREQ (Route Request Packet) or to give up packet forwarding depending on its own traffic load. Meanwhile, mobile nodes nay deliberately give up forwarding packets to save their own energy. To make nodes volunteer in packet forwarding. we also suggest a payment scheme called Protocol-Independent Fairness Algorithm (PIEA) for packet forwarding. To evaluate the performance of SLA, we compare two cases where AODV employs SLA or not. Simulation results show that SLA can distribute traffic load well and improve performance of entire ad-hoc networks.
