  • In order to make a winter cereal wrap silage, a tractor attached round bale wrapper was developed locally. Its specific structure and various functions were reported in the last submitted paper. In this study a control system of bale wrapper combining with the actuators of various processes was developed to make round bale wrapper compatible in the field. Also. its performance was tested by making the rye round bale. The results can be summarized as fellow. 1. The field capacity of round bale wrapping was investigated around 0.5 ha/hr, and the operating time of bale wrapper was about 3 min for each 500kg round bale 2. Plastic film which has maximum elongation rate of 796% was stretched to 150∼170% of original length and was lessened to 80∼90% of original width. 3. In the quality test of bale produced by developed bale wrapper, there was no significant changes of moisture contents if it was wrapped more than 4 layers of 25 ㎛-plastic film. 4. Also. temperature of the wrapped bale was about 33$\^{C}$ in the beginning of fermentation and was stabled to 26∼29$\^{C}$ during one month or more storage. Therefore, wrapping performance of the developed bale wrapper was properly.

  • One of the major obstructing factors against managing dairy farm in Korea has been a shortage of roughage supply, which resulted in excessive abuse of concentrate feed. In order to solve this problem, production of the wrap silage by the winter cereal forages raised in the fallow paddy field is strongly recommended in Korea. The main objective is to develop a tractor attached round bale wrapper which can process the silage by wrapping the round bales with thin plastic films. This is the first half of the study which is divided by two parts. In this first part, bale wrapping process was analyzed, and based on this results the followings were designed, developed and tested. 1. Bale wrapper which haying the maximum capacity of 1 ton bale with various functions such as loading, wrapping, discharging the round bales and supplying and cutting wrap films was designed. 2. An actuator and its hydraulic circuit of each process were developed and tested. 3. Also, the variations of hydraulic pressure and engine speed were investigated by operating bale wrapper developed. In this test, maximum pressure of the hydraulic circuit for the bale wrapping was 130 kg/㎠ when it raised the bale, which was quite below the relief pressure of 170 kg/㎠ of hydraulic circuit. In the engine speed test, speed drop was 20∼67 rpm, which meant that there was no over-load operation. Therefore, the experiment proved that developed hydraulic circuit and mechanism is stable in bale wrapping operation

  • Not many types of roughage cutters have been introduced in Korea so far. However, those machines could not satisfy farmers to cut rice straw or barley wrap-silage properly. Stiffness and firmness of roughage bale were two obstructing factors. In order to solve this problem, a tractor attached cut-feeding machinery for the round baled roughage was developed for dairy and beef cattle farm in Korea. A series of tests were performed and acquired data were analyzed by using the several imported roughage cutters, which have been already introduced in dairy farm in Korea. And, a prototype of forage cutter was selected, analyzed, designed and manufactured to develop a tractor attached roughage cut-feeder for round bale. Also, the prototype machine was tested, modified and improved through revising model. As a result, a tractor attached roughage cut-feeder for round bale was manufactured. In order to evaluate the performance of the model machinery. a series of test were performed by the prototype machinery both at the plant and field. The model machinery developed satisfied in both power requirement and cutting capacity. As a conclusion, one of the obstacles against feeding the round baled roughage in the korea cattle farm can be eliminated by developing the tractor attached round baled roughage cut-feeder.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of various parts of sorghum-sorghum hybrid (SSH) silage on nutritive values and qualities of SSH round bale silage and trench silage. SSH "SS405" was harvested at heading stages and ensiled. Samples of SSH silage used in this study were collected in three different parts (outer, middle and inner). The contents of crude protein (CP) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and in vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) in SSH round bale silage showed trends similar to SSH trench silage. However, the contents of acid detergent fiber (ADF) and total digestible nutrient (TDN) in SSH trench silage appeared slightly an increased trend, as compared to SSH round bale silage. The contents of CP in inner parts of both SSH round bale silage and trench silage were lower than those of Outer and middle parts (p<0.05). However, The contents of NDF, ADF and TDN, and IVDMD were not different between the parts of SSH silage. The content of lactic acid in SSH round bale silage was significantly decreased (p<0.05), as compared to SSH trench silage. The content of acetic acid appeared an decreased trends, but there is not significantly different between SSH round bale silage and trench silage. In addition, the contents of lactic acid, acetic acid and butyric acid were not different between the parts of SSH silage.

  • In southeastern regions of the US, herbage systems are primarily based on grazing or hay feeding with low nutritive value warm-season perennial grasses. Nutritious herbage such as annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.) may be more suitable for preserving as baleage for winter feeding even with more intensive production inputs. Emerging in-line wrapped baleage storage systems featuring rapid wrapping and low polyethylene film requirements need to be tested for consistency of storing nutritive value of a range of annual ryegrass herbage. A ryegrass storage trial was conducted with 24-h wilted 'Marshall' annual ryegrass harvested at booting, heading and anthesis stages using three replicated in-line wrapped tubes containing ten round bales per tube. After a six-month storage period, nutritive value changes and fermentation end products differed significantly by harvest stage but not by bale location. Although wilted annual ryegrass exhibited a restricted fermentation across harvest stages characterized by high pH and low fermentation end product concentrations, butyric acid concentrations were less than 1 g/kg dry matter, and lactic acid was the major organic acid in the bales. Mold coverage and bale aroma did not differ substantially with harvest stage or bale location. Booting and heading stage-harvested ryegrass baleage were superior in nutritive value to anthesis stage-harvested herbage. Based on the investigated nutritive value and fermentation characteristics, individual bale location within in-line tubes did not significantly affect preservation quality of ryegrass round bale silages.

  • Purpose: This paper presents an appropriate wrapping method by analyzing the pressure distribution applied to a bale surface, along with the change in pressure according to an increase in the number of film layers in rice straw bales, which account for 74% of the total bulky feed supply in Korea. Methods: A model with the shape of an actual bale was fabricated to analyze the distribution of surface pressure in bale wrapping, and the pressure was measured. Experiments were conducted to analyze the pressure using eight different layer numbers (2, 4, 6, 8 10, 12, 14, and 16 layers) at five wrapping speeds (27, 29, 31, 33, and 35 rpm). Results: The maximum pressure applied to a circular bale by the film occurred at the center of the end of the bale, whereas the minimum pressure occurred at the center of the bale side. An extreme value ratio between the minimum and maximum pressures was distributed as 8.5-56.6%, which was improved with an increase in rotation speed. The an uneven pressure distribution occurred because the number of film overlaps was 8.24-times greater at the center of the bale's end than at the center of the ba le side. At a level 5 rotation speed, the minimum pressure was $P_{LV5-M1}=0.0625{\sigma}^2+36.173{\sigma}-36.753$ ($R^2=0.9845$) at $M_1$, and the maximum pressure was $P_{LV5-M6}=5.5552{\sigma}^2+41.05{\sigma}-39.071$ at $M_2$, revealing a correlation of $R^2=0.9983$. Conclusions: To replace four layers with six layers, 2-4 layers were added only to the side of the bale, and the minimum pressure at $M_1$ was then improved from that at four layers to that at six layers, and the amount of film consumed for 4-6 layers was reduced by 84.6%.

  • In order to cut the round bale easily, a roughage cut-feeder for the round bale was developed in this study. This study consists of two parts. One is development of a cutting mechanism and a performance test reported in the previous paper. This is the second part of the study. For the study, recent trend of traditional cutting system was analyzed. Also, cost of the prototype cut-feeder was analyzed and determine the break-even point of farm size was determined by comparing with traditional method using a traditional cutter. A prototype cut-feeder was investigated with the fact that working performance, fiber length and shape of roughage and feeding quality was good. Operating cost of the prototype cut-feeder decreased rapidly with an increase of farm size. Break-even point in terms of farm size was 36 heads for beef and 28 heads for dairy. Also, costs estimated were 118,000 won/head year and 148,000 won/head year, respectively.

  • Currently, there was no producing system of TMR for pig feeding in Korea. In this study, we examined unrolling, cutting, and softening for the round bale silage. We designed and developed the prototype system of round bale silage for pig feeding. Unroll method were lower chain conveying and upper belt conveying which includes an hydraulic vertical fodder knife. Gathering and cutting method were rotating auger and flywheel which have 10 cutters, input roller of 280 rpm, and cutter rotating speed of 1,750 rpm. Softening device was rotating hammer in inclined cylinder adjustable to $25^{\circ}C$ and rotating speed up to 1,300 rpm. The prototype system was integrated working for unrolling, cutting, and softening. We found that when the round bale silage in unrolling apparatus cut length of 20 cm to input cutting apparatus, the cutting performance was well in continuous working up to input rate of 1,000 kg/h, the softening apparatus was working well.

  • The objective of this experiment was to evaluate chemical composition, dry matter(DM) digestibility, DM intake, relative feed value(RFV) and hay grade of imported roughage which was collected by wholesale dealer at Chungnam province in 1999. Experimental roughages includes 8 kinds of imported hays(com stover bale, tall fescue straw, green cell, bermudagrass straw, reed camarygrass straw, alfalfa bale, sugarcane bale and oat hay) and mixture hay(contro1) which was harvested at Chungnam National University experimental field. Compared with mixture hay(contro1) except for alfalfa bale, crude protein of most imported roughage was low, but NDF, ADF, cellulose and lignin compound were high. Futhermore, DM digestibility, DM intake, RFV and hay grade of imported roughage except for alfalfa bale was significantly lower than those of mixture hay(control)(P<0.05). Therefore, it is necessary to evaluate the economic value in the aspect of quality for the imported roughages. (Key words : Imported roughage, RFV, Hay grade, Nutritive value)
