  • In this study, impact force and angular displacement of the pendulum were measured by the load cell and potentiometer. Mechanical behavior of rough rice under impact loading was able to analyze precisely and efficiently, because measured data were accumulated and handled by the automatic data acquisition system making use of microcomputer system. Impact force and angular displacement were measured with a resolutiln of 1/1500 seconds in time. Mechanical behavior such as force and energy at rupture point of Japonica type and Indica type rough rice were measured with this system. After impact loading, the damage of rough rice was examined with the microphotograph and an allowable impact force was measured. The results obtained in this study are summarized as follows. 1. Machanical behavior of rough rice under impact loading was analyzed precisely and efficiently because measured data were accumulated and handled by this data acquisition system. 2. Rupture force and rupture energy of rough rice were appeared to be the lowest value in the range of 16 to 18 % moisture content, and rupture force and rupture energy of Japonica type were higher than those of Indica type in each level of moisture content. 3. From the result of the damage examined after the impact loading, allowable impact force was the lowest in the range of 16 to 18 % moisture content, and the value of the allowable impact force of Japonica type was higher than that of Indica type in each level of moisture content.

  • The objective of this research was to establish a domestically available cooling storage technique by cold-air in winter, using winter cool air ventilation fur determining rough rice cooling method in the storage and dry bin. The rough rice storage characteristics of two test conditions, winter cool-air ventilation storage and ambient temperature storage, were evaluated from January to July 2001, using a storage and dry bin of 300-ton capacity. Results of this research are as follows: Grain temperature was from $-5.1\~-8.5^{\circ}C$ after winter cool-air ventilation, and grain initial temperature for ambient temperature bin storage was $0.3\~1.9^{\circ}C$. Moisture content of rough rice decreased from $0.28\;to\;0.93\%$ and from $1.53\;to\;1.92\%$ to compare with original moisture contents for winter cool-air ventilation, and for ambient temperature bin storage, respectively. Broken ratio of brown rice from winter cool-air ventilation bin increased from $0.16\;to\; 0.92\%$, and brown rice broken ratio was from $2.24\;to\;2.86\%$ for ambient temperature bin storage to compare with initial broken ratio. Hardness of stored rice increased along storage period increase in alt storage methods, and cooling bin storage increased rice hardness of 0.271kgf: this increasing was lower then the other methods from 0.059 to 2.239kgf. Germination rates were decreased approximately 9.03, 3.14 and $3.20\%$ for upper, middle, and bottom of ventilating winter air bin, respectively, and germination rates of 2.70, 3.47 and $4.14\%$ were approximately decreased for upper, middle, and bottom parts of ambient temperature bin storage, respectively.

  • This study was performed to determine adsorption equilibrium moisture contents of rough rice, brown rice, white rice and rice hull grown in Korea. EMC values were measured by static method using saturated salt solutions at three temperature levels of 20$\^{C}$, 30$\^{C}$ and 40$\^{C}$, and eight relative humidity levels in the range from 11.2% to 85.0%. The measured EMC values were fitted to modified Henderson, Chung-Pfost, and modified Oswin models by using nonlinear regression analysis. The results of comparing root mean square errors for three models showed that modified Henderson and Chung-Pfost models could serve as good models, and that modified Oswin model could not be applicable to rough rice, brown rice, white rice and rice hull.

  • The effect of temperature on hysteresis of rough rice grown in Korea was investigated. The maximum hysteresis effect of Chucheongbyeo paddy rice at 5$^{\circ}C$ amounted to an average 1.7% moisure content. However, their values at $25^{\circ}C$ and 4$0^{\circ}C$ averaged 1.2% and 0.7% moisture, respectively. It may be suggested that the exteents of hysteresis are affected by the temperature of hysteresis are affected by the temperature of adsorption and desorption.

  • In order to obtain basic information for selecting early maturing rice varieties which is suitable for early cropping before Alisma plantago in the southern part of Korea. Six rice varieties were grown from May to August in 2002 at Youngjeon Experiment Field, Sunchon and yield components and yield of plants were investingated. Early maturing rice cv. Grubyeo showed higher rough rice yield than any other varieties used in the experiment. It showed high yield components, such as culm length, panicle length, number of panicles per plant, number of spikelets per panicle and ratio of ripened grains. Therefore, it was concluded that Grubyeo was the most suitable variety with high yield for the cultivation before growing of Alisma plantago at the southern part of Korea. The heritability of culm length number of spikelets per panicle and rough rice yield were high and that of panicle length number of panicle per plant, ratio of ripened grain and 1,000 grain wt. of milled rice were low. According to the result of path coefficient analysis, characters highly correlated with rough rice yield showed large direct effects on rough rice yield.

  • The compression creep behavior of grains when loaded depends not only on load but also on duration of load application. The most common methods of studying the load-time characteristics of agricultural products is by employing rheological models such as Burger's model. However it is sometimes not sufficient to describe the viscoelastic behavior of grains to be Burger's model. For this reason, this study was conducted to develop the rheological model which represented the creep compliance response of the rough rice kernel and was a function of initial stress applied and time. The effects of the initial stress applied and the moisture content on the compression creep behavior of the rough rice kernel were analyzed. The results were obtained from the study as follows: 1. Since the viscoelastic behavior of the rough rice kernel was nonlinear, the transient and steady state creep compliance was satisfactorily modelled as follows: $$J({\sigma},t)=A{\sigma}^B[C+Dt-exp(-Ft)]$$ But, for the every stress applied, the compression creep behavior of the samples tested can be well described by Burger's model respectively. 2. The creep compliance, the instantaneous elastic strain, the retarded elastic strain and the viscous strain of the sample tested generally increased in magnitude with increasing the applied initial stress and the moisture content used in the tests. At low moisture content, the creep compliance for the Japonica-type rough rice kernel Was a little higher than those for Indica-type and at high moisture content, vice versa at high moisture content. 3. The retardation times of the samples had not an uniform tendency by the initial stress and the moisture content. The retardation times ranged from 0.66 to 6.76 seconds, and the creep progressed from transient to steady state at a relatively high rate. 4. The less viscous strain than the instantaneous elastic strain for the samples tested indicated that rough rice kernel behaved as a viscoelastic body characterized by elasticity than viscosity.

  • The knowlege of thermal properties of rough rice has become of greate importance to the analysis of heat and mass transfer phenomenon in rice drying and storage process. Some information is available on the thermal properties of rough rice in foreign countries but is not available for these properties in Korea. A fundamental study was made to determine the thermal conductivity and thermal diffusivity of rough rice with line source method and to select current and resistance suitable for these properties from investigating the effect of current and resistance of heating wire on the temperature rise. The result of this study may be summarized as follows ; 1. Even through the power per unit length of heating wires is about the same, the tendency of temperature rise showed a little difference among them , and the suitable range of it for thermal properties was found to be 3.56-5.37w/m. 2. the most desirable resistance and current of heating wire was 18.40 ohm/m, 0.44 amperes among three kinds of heating wires and currents, respectively. because it took 13 minutes or so for the heating wire to reach equilibrium temperature. 3. The thermal conductivity of rough rice was 0.120-0.130 w/m$ ^\circ C$. and thermal diffusivity of it was $5.8210 $\times10^{-8} -9.7529 $\times10^{-8} m^2 /s.$ 4.The thermal conductivity showed a little difference in variation with resistance of heating wire but the variation of current of heating wire at the same resistance did not affect the thermal conductivity , and the thermal diffusivity was not affected by the variation of resistance and current.

  • The objectives of this study were to evaluate respiration characteristics and develop empirical respiratory rate equations for short gain rough rice. The carbon dioxide concentrations generated from mush rice at four level temperatures(10, 20, 30, 4$0^{\circ}C$) and 4 level moisture contents(17.2, 21.5, 25.9, 31.6%, d.b.) were measured by gas chromatography. The respiratory rates' increased exponentially with gain temperature and also with moisture content The relationship between respiratory rate and gain temperature fitted the Arrehenius' and Core's equations very well. Two empirical respiratory rate equations were presented as a function of gain temperature and moisture content. The values of determination coefficient for the developed respiratory rate equations were 0.999, and the result of t-test showed that there were no significant differences between predicted and measured respiratory rates on significance level of 1%. Therefore, it appeared that respiratory rates predicted by the respiratory rate equations agreed well with measured values. An equation for predicting dry matter losses of rough rice during storage was presented by modifying the respiratory rate equations based on chemical reaction of decomposition of carbohydrate.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the adequate storage method that was able to maintain the high quality of rough rice according to storage methods and period. The quality change of the rough rice during the storage period was evaluated by storage method such as cooling bin using winter cold air, ordinary temperature bin, freezing, refrigeration and indoor storage. Moisture content, brown rice whiteness, hardness, crack ratio and germination ratio were measured in this study. Moisture content of rough rice stored in cooling bin using winter cold air and ordinary temperature bin were decreased by 0.07% and 0.42%, respectively, which were lower than the other storage method. The hardness of brown rice increased in order of storage method such as winter cooling bin, normal bin, freezing storage, refrigeration storage and indoor storage. Crack ratio by indoor and ordinary temperature bin storage were increased by 2.68% and 3.63%, respectively, whereas cooling bin using winter cold air, refrigeration and freezing storage showed below 1.0%. The highest germination rate was found in cooling bin using winter cold air. As a result, cooling bin using winter cold air can be evaluated for the adequate storage method of rough rice.
