A 600HP class high-speed gear driven 3-stage turbo-compressor (IGCC : Integrally Geared Centrifugal Compressor) driven by a 3600 rpm AC induction motor has been designed, of which low speed pinion runs at 35000 rpm and high speed pinion at 50000 rpm nominally. Due to its high speed operation, the system requires very reliable bearing selection and design as well as accurate rotordynamic analysis and prediction of its dynamic behavior to secure the operating reliability. Rotordaynamic analyses of the IGCC rotor-bearing system predicted that the low speed pinion rotor mounted on 5-pad tilting pad bearings has two critical speeds before its design speed and high speed pinion rotor only one critical speed, and estimated critical speeds of both pinion shafts are away from the continuous operating speed enough to satisfy the corresponding API requirement. The forced response analysis with API specified maximum allowable unbalances also showed that unbalance responses are small enough for smooth operation of the system.
This paper presents a implementation of speed sensorless vector control algorithm of induction motor using MATLAB/SIMULINK amd dSPACE DSl104 R&D board. The estimation of rotor flux linkage and rotor speed is carried out using model reference adaptive system(MRAS) method. Estimated rotor speed is used to speed controller of induction motor. Simulation results are presented to confirm speed sensorless vector control algorithm.
A new method of induction motor drive, which requires not shaft encoder, is presented. This system has both torque and speed controls that are performed by vector control. The scheme is on the basis of a rotor flux speed control, which is performed by torque producing current and rotor flux, derived from the stator voltages and currents. But, there is a problem with respect to the calculated rotor flux vector, which is an integrating operation by which the rotor induced voltage is converted into the rotor flux. The calculated rotor flux does not work so that it is unstable in initial operation, as motor speed approaches zero. For the proposed rotor flux estimator, a lag circuit is employed, to which both the motor-induced voltage and rotor flux command are imposed, and it is possible to calculate even a low frequency down to standstill. We show the validity of the proposed control method through several computer simulations.

This paper presents a new velocity estimation strategy for a non-salient permanent magnet synchronous motor drive without high frequency signal injection or special PWM pattern. This approach is based on the d-axis current regulator output voltage of the drive system, which contains the rotor position error information. The rotor velocity can be estimated through a rotor position tracking PI controller that controls the position error at zero. For zero and low speed operation, the PI gain of the rotor position tracking controller has a variable structure according to the estimated rotor velocity. Then, at zero speed, the rotor position and velocity have sluggish dynamics because the varying gains are very low in this region. In order to boost the bandwidth of the PI controller during zero speed, the loop recovery technique is applied to the control system. The PI tuning formulas are also derived by analyzing this control system by frequency domain specifications such as phase margin and bandwidth assignment.
The optimum rotation speed of a desiccant rotor is studied theoretically based on a theoretical solution to the heat and mass transfer processes in the desiccant rotor. A simple correlation equation for the optimum rotation speed is derived to show the effects of various parameters including the thermo-physical properties, the geometric dimension, and the operating condition of the desiccant rotor. The theoretical result is compared with existing experimental data to validate the linearization and simplification included in the solution procedure. Based on the theoretical solution, the effects of major parameters on the optimum rotation speed are studied and the fundamental mechanism of the influences is investigated.
In order to utilize unsorted ONP, which contains leaflets (printed coated papers), as a raw material to produce pulp mold, optimum conditions for repulping were investigated with the pilot Helico pulper at Centre Technique du Paper (CTP), France. Two major process factors were focused: repulping concentration and rotor speed. Repulping at a higher concentration showed more rapid defibering kinetics. Increasing the rotational speed of rotor at the optimum repulping concentration accelerated the defibering kinetics while it also led to higher fines generation and faster decrease in drainage property of the produced pulp. Hence, an alternative way was suggested: starting repulping at a conventional rotor speed and then accelerating the rotor speed for the last minute(s) of repulping.
A nonlinear adaptive speed observer is designed for the sensorless control of induction motors. In order to design the speed observer, the measurements of the stator currents and the estimates of the rotor fluxes are used. The sliding mode cascade observer is designed to estimate the time derivatives of the stator currents. The open-loop observer is designed to estimate the rotor fluxes and its time derivatives using the stator current derivatives. The adaptive observer is also designed to estimate the rotor resistance. Sequentially, the rotor speed is calculated using these estimated values. It is shown that the estimation errors of the corresponding states and the parameters converge to the specified residual set. It is also shown that the speed controller using these estimates is performed well. The simulation examples are represented to investigate the validity of the proposed observers for the sensorless control of induction motors.
A rotordynamic analysis is performed with a centrifuge rotor-bearing system for the raing speed of 100,000 rpm. The system is composed of a centrifuge rotor(or simply the rotor), flexible shaft, motor rotor and shaft, and two support rolling element bearings of the motor shaft. Design goals are to achieve wide separation margins of critical speeds and favorable unbalance responses of the rotor at the associated critical speeds. The latter requirements are especially important as the system crosses multiple numbers of critical speeds and as the system may not have enough separaton margins around the rating speed. As the system adopts an extra-flexible shaft, it is shown that the rotor has satisfactory small unbalance responses over higher criticals while having an unsatisfactory large one at the first critical. To supress this a bumper ring or guide bearing needs to be installed at a suitable location of the flexible shaft. It is also shown that even with the flexible shaft the dynamics of the motor must be incoporated into the full system model to accurately identify the fourth critical speed, which is close to the rating speed, and higher ones. The analysis is based on the finite element method.
In the design of a rotor shaft, care should be taken to minimize vibration by taking into account the sources of vibration. In addition, the intensity critical speed, stability, and other related aspects of the system must be considered. especially when it is operated at a critical speed, it is important to address issues related to vibration, as an increase in the whirling response of the rotor shaft can cause damage to the shaft, destruction of the rotor parts, and detrimental abrasions on the bearings. In this thesis, the vibration characteristics of a rotor shaft are investigated through the use of the finite element method. Variations of the diameters and lengths were used to determine the effect of a rotor shaft using Beam No.188(3D linear strain beam) in ANSYS version 11.0 as a universal interpretation program for finite elements. Special care was taken to prevent excessive vibration, which can result from resonance at the initial stage, in the formulation of a dynamic design for a rotor shaft through calculations while changing the diameters and the lengths of the shaft. Moreover, the dynamic characteristics of the critical speed, total mass, D/L(diameter to length) ratio, and natural frequency were verified. Furthermore, the rotor shaft applied by bearing element was calculated and compared by using Combi No. 214(2-D spring-damper bearing).
