In this paper the aeroacoustic characteristics of a helicopter main rotor system is measured by using a pair of scaled rotor blades. A low noise rotor test jig is developed for noise measurement and the rotational speed, thrust and torque are measured simultaneously in order to match the aerodynamic conditions with the full scale rotor. The accuracy of the force measurement device was checked through a calibration procedure. The measured thurst and torque with a 1.2m rotor are compared to the results of analytical prediction and showed that the thrust data at various rotational speed followed the prediction relatively well, but the torque data considered less accurate. It is also found that the background noise level of the test rig is sufficiently low, and the measured noise level from the rotor can be scaled with rotor tip speed. However, the Mach number dependancy and the directivity changes depend on the noise source characteristics.
The aerodynamic and noise calculations were performed through the CFD-CSD loose coupling methodology. In the loose coupling process, the trimmed rotor airloads were predicted by the in-house CFD code based on unstructured overset meshes, and the trim of the rotorcraft and the aeroelastic deformation of rotor blades were accounted with the CAMRAD II rotorcraft comprehensive code. The set of codes was used to analyze the HART-II baseline test condition. The effect of grid resolution and time step was examined and the loose coupling approach was found to be stable and convergent for the case. Comparison of the resulting sectional airloads, structural deformations, the noise carpets and the wake geometry with experimentally measured data was presented and showed the good agreement.

Sound generation and radiation from the duct-rotor system are calculated numerically. The wake geometries of a two-bladed rotor are calculated by using a time-marching fiee-wake method without a non-physical model of the far wake. Acoustic free field due to a rotating rotor is obtained by Lowson's equation. Using Kirchhoff source, rotating sources are modeled as stationary ones and can be inserted in the thin body boundary element method. The Kirchhoff source is validated through calculation of acoustic pressure due to a rotating point force. The thin body boundary element method (thin body BEM) is validated through calculation of acoustic radiation of ducted dipole. Using Kirchhoff source and thin body BEM, acoustic radiation of a ducted rotating source is calculated. Acoustic shielding is observed by inserting a duct and shows different phenomena at each major frequency. Acoustic radiation of a real duct-rotor system is also calculated using this method and the ducted acoustic field is significantly different from rotor only.

Tilt rotor aircraft was developed for satisfying VSTOL (vertical short take off and landing) capability and cruise performance. However the noise generated by tilt rotor system causes one of the most serious problems. In this paper, noise characteristics of tilt rotor system in hovering flight are predicted by using free wake method and Lowson's formula. The flow field of the tilt rotor is simulated by using time marching free wake method, and the free field acoustic pressure is calculated through Lowson's formula. The predicted results are compared with experimental data at various observing positions. In the near field, they show good agreement with experimental data regardless of rotating speed and collective pitch angles of 6, 8 and 10 degree, although there are some discrepancies between prediction and experiment in the far field and at the rotating axis in the near field. It seems that the reason of these discrepancies is difference of unsteady force fluctuation between experiment and calculation.
In this study, we investigate the effects of slots installed on the tip of a rotor blade on aerodynamic characteristics. The slots weaken the strength and spatial coherence of the tip vortex at early vortex age and accelerate the dissipation of the generated tip vortex. Accordingly, the turbulence intensity of the rotor wake is reduced at both near and far wake, which leads to a reduction in broadband noise. Tonal noise is also reduced by mitigation of tip vortices, but tonal noise reduction is limited to a narrower range of azimuths than broadband noise due to the extinction of tip vortices. In addition, slots reduce both mean thrust and thrust fluctuations. Reduction in thrust fluctuations leads to a reduction in blade loading noise, resulting in a reduction in tonal noise.

A high speed rotor balancing machine was developed, which is capable of balancing a flexible rotor in high speed. The machine is largely consisted of vacuum chamber, oil supply system and vacuum pump system. And, in order to investigate performances of the machine, various tests were carried. After high speed rotor balancing of gas turbine engine rotor using influence coefficient method, the flexible engine rotor passed smoothly through its critical speed.

Noise of automotive alternators can be classified into mechanical noise, aerodynamic noise and electro-magnetic noise. which is the same as for electric motors. Previous studies show that the elect ro-magnetic noise takes a maw peak at the rotating frequency multiplied by the number of stator slots. It has not been proved clearly so far, however, that the major peak is wholely due to the stator slots. On the contrary it is well known that noise of motors. which has a mechanism similar to the alternator except that the number of stator slots in automotive alternators is in gene\integer multiple of that of rotor segments, is closely related to the number of rotor slots. Therefore, the statement that only the stator slots is the source of the major peak in the noise spectrum of alternators is suspicious although not easy, to show theoretically, that the statement is incorrect. In this paper. effects of the stator slots on the noise in an automotive alternator are experimentally investigated by intentionally modifying the number of stator slots in such a way that the number of the states is not an integer multiples of the rotor slots. It is shown that both the stator slots are not so much influential as the rotor slots and claimed that the major peak in the noise spectrum of conventional alternators is due to superposition of a component caused by the stator and a higher harmonic component caused by the rotor
In this paper, we propose a PID control scheme with noise reduction for attitude control of quad-rotor. To reduce the measurement noise, the disturbance observer with noise reduction is employed and then the PID controller is designed to control the attitude of quad-rotor. Finally, simulation results are provided to verify the effectiveness of the designed control scheme.
This study describes aerodynamic noise of high speed wind turbine system, which is invented as a new concept in order to reduce the torque of main shaft, for design parameters of the rotor blade. For parametric study of high speed rotor aerodynamic noise, Unsteady Vortex Lattice Method with Nonlinear Vortex Correction Method is used for analysis of wind turbine blade aerodynamic and Farassat1A and Semi-Empirical are used for low frequency noise and airfoil self noise. Parameters are chord length, twist and rotational speed for this parametric research. In the low frequency range, the change of noise is predicted the same level as each parameters varies. However, in case of broadband noise of blade, the change of rotational speed makes more variation of noise than other parameters. When the geometric angles of attack are fixed, as the rotational speed is increased by 5RPM, the noise level is increased by 4dB.
Numerical prediction of aerodynamic noise radiated by subsonic rotors are carried out. A computer program has been developed which incorporates both the discrete frequency noise as well as the broadband noise arising from the ingestion of turbulence. Acoustic analogy is used in conjunction with Homicz's formulation of turbulence ingestion noise. Formulation 1A of Farassat is used to enhance the numerical analysis performance of Ffowcs-Williams Hawkings equation by eliminating the numericla time differentiation. Homicz's trubulence ingestion noise prediction technique is used to understand the characteristics of broadband noise radiated by isotropic trubulence in gestion. Numerical predictions are carried out for a number of rotor configurations and compared with experimental data. Monopole consideration of transonic rotor agrees well with both the experimental data and the linear theory. Noise radiation characteristics of rotor at lifting hover are investigated utilizing simple blade loading obtained by thin wing section theory. By incorporating discrete noise prediction of steady loading with broadband spectrum, much better agreement with experimental data is obtained in the low frequency region. The contributions from different noise mechanisms can also be analyzed through this method.
