  • The wear behaviors of ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene pins against titanium alloy and stainless steel disks moving in two different kinematic motion were investigated by conducting repeat pass rotational sliding and linear reciprocal sliding wear tests. Linear reciprocal motion wore more the polyethylene pin than did repeat pass rotational motion for both disk materials. It means that the repeated directional change of contact stresses generates more wear debris in polyethylene. For the linear reciprocal sliding tests, titanium alloy disks were damaged with some scratches after one million cycles but no surface damage was observed on the polyethylene pins. On the other hand, for the repeat pass rotational sliding tests, all titanium alloy disks were severely abraded on the entire region of sliding track. This phenomenon can be interpreted by that stress fatigue under repeated sliding contact initiated titanium oxide layer wear particles from disk surface, and these hard particles were embedded into polyethylene pin and then they severely abraded the disk surface. From these results it can be concluded that the kinematic motion in pin-on-disk wear tests play a crucial role on the wear behaviors of UHMWPE pins against titanium alloy and stainless steel disks.

  • Present work deals with a study on the deployment or retraction of cantilever beam that includes the rigid-body motion of large displacement of beam through the translational and rotational motions in 2-dimensional plane. The equations of motion are derived with respect to non-Cartesian coordinate system. In the formulation of equations of motion, shear deformations and geometrically non-linear effect are included. An assumed mode method is applied and numerical convergence characteristics are studied also. Types of motion of the moving beam are assumed to be classified as‘slow’or‘fast’motion, and the dynamic characteristics are investigated.

  • Ultra-precision positioning plays a crucial role in emerging technologies such as electronics, bioengineering, optics, and various nanofabrication technologies. As a result, various nanopositioning methods have been presented. In particular, nanopositioning using a flexure mechanism and piezo-electric actuator is one of the most valuable methods because of its friction-free motion and subnanometer-scale motion resolution. In this study, a rotational nanoactuator based on a right-circular flexure mechanism and piezo-electric actuator was developed through a consideration of the kinematics and structural deformation. An experimental setup was constructed to verify the performance expectation. Consequently, it was demonstrated that the developed system had a maximum rotational angle of about 0.01 rad, as well as sufficient linearity with respect to the input voltage.

  • In this study, we conducted a textbook analysis and a conceptual test in order to investigate misconceptions of preservice chemistry teachers in understanding motions of molecular gases. As a result, we found out that many of the general chemistry textbooks not only introduce motions of molecular gases by explaining basic conceptions and using simple models, but also omit the explanation on center of mass when dealing with rotational motion. The physical chemistry textbooks, however, mainly approach motions of molecular gases in terms of spectroscopy and use various models to explain more intensified concepts, referring the center of mass in rotational motions. Meanwhile, pre-service chemistry teachers' confidence and understanding in the motions of molecular gases were very low and pre-service teachers also had many misconceptions about them. We believe this is because they had a tendency to depend largely on their intuition based on the pre-conceptions and the visual materials in the textbooks.

  • The motion of a cylindrical object resting on shallow seabed due to wave forces and soil friction is studied. Given environmental conditions such as wave characteristics and seabed soil properties, the equations of motion are derived and the corresponding reponses of the cylinder in two dimensional plane, i.e., translational and rotational displacements, accelerations, are calculated. The motion is substantially restrained by the penetration of a cylinder into seabed and the parametric study focuses on finding out a minimum penetration depth which makes the cylinder motionless.

  • Solar chromospheric surges are often reported to contain rotational motion. However, the details of the motion and driving mechanism of the surges are not yet fully understood. Recurrent surges with rotational motion at AR 10930 on the west limb are observed by Hinode Solar Optical Telescope (SOT) continuously from 11:21 UT on December 18 to 09:58 UT on December 19, 2006, using the $Ca_{II}$ H broadband filter. We analyze details of the motion including number of turns from the rise of the surge to the fall, axial speed and acceleration. During the observation, rise and fall motion accompanying rotation appears recurrently. There occur a total of 14 surges at AR 10930 over 17 hours. The average duration is 45 minutes, and the average width, and length are 8 Mm, and 39 Mm, respectively. We speculate that the surges occurred by recurrent reconnections between the twisted prominence and large untwisted flux tube.

  • Effects of translational and rotational motions of the foundation on the dynamic behaviors of a bridge under seismic excitations are examined by utilizing a simplified 3 degree-of-freedom of system. To consider the nonlinear characteristics of the RC pier, a hysteresis model is adapted, which can simulate the inelastic motion of the pier with the stiffness degradation. From results, the portion of the total displacement due to rotational motion of the foundation becomes larger as applied seismic excitation increases.

  • This study is generalization of the study of Miles[Physica 11D, 1984, pp.309-323]on the resonant motion of a spherical pendulum, which is equivalent to a particle on a spherical container subject to a linear, horizontal excitation. This study covers an arbitrary shape of container and a more general excitation (horizontal but elliptic motion). The averaging method is applied to reduce the governing equations to an autonomous system with cubic nonlinear terms, under the assumption of small amplitude of the container motion. It is shown that both the container shape and the excitation pattern affect the particle dynamics. Under the linear excitation, the anharmonic motion of the particle is possible only for a certain finite range of the parameter a controling the container shape. Stability of the particle's harmonic motion is also influenced by the excitation pattern; as the excitation trajectory becomes closer to a circle, the particle's motion has a stronger tendency to become stable and to follow the rotational direction of the excitation. Under a circular excitation, the motion is always stable and circular with the same rotational direction as the excitation. Analogy between the present model and that of the surface wave inside a circular is studied quantitatively.

  • The fabrication characteristics of porous uranium oxide granules from $U_3O_8$ powder was investigated in terms of initial particle bed motions such as slumping and rolling, thermal treatment conditions, and rotational velocities in slumping motion using a rotary voloxidizer. With respect to the initial particle bed motion the recovery rate of granule of above 1 mm in slumping motion was higher than that in the rolling motion. Rolling motion was changed into slumping motion with high slumping frequency by formation of granules from fine particles. Recovery rate of granule significantly increased with the increas in thermal treatment temperature and time of upto 10 h. As the rotational velocity of voloxidizer in the case of the initial particle bed showing slumping motion increased, the recovery rate of granule increased from 81.5 to 88.7%. However, the rotational velocity of 2 rpm provided an effective density, crushing strength and sphericity of granules.

  • In general, the radial error motion of a machine tool spindle system is effected on the accuracy of the parts to be made. This paper presents in milling process an investigation into spindle rotational accuracy effects on surface roughness of processing parts. We experimented the effects on spindle rotational accuracy in milling process by cutting AL 7075 workpiece at various rotational speed. In order to analyze the effects of rotational accuracy on surface roughness, we proposed the method using iSIGHT's RBF Approximation. The proposed method can be used fur anticipating the surface roughness when some spindle rotational accuracy experiments could be done in milling process.
