  • Many researchers have been trying to improve the propulsion efficiency of a propeller. In this study, the numerical analysis is carried out for the POW(Propeller Open Water test) performance of a propeller equipped with an energy saving device called PHVC(Propeller Hub Vortex Control). PHVC is aimed to control the propeller hub vortex behind the propeller so that the rotational kinetic energy loss can be reduced. The unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes(URANS) equations are assumed as the governing flow equations and are solved by using a commercial CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics) software, where SST k-ω model is selected for turbulence closure. The computed characteristic values, thrust, torque and propulsion efficiency coefficients for the target propeller with and without PHVC and the local flows in the propeller wake region are validated by the model test results of KRISO LCT(Large Cavitation Tunnel). It is concluded from the present numerical results that CFD can be a good promising method in the assessment of the hydrodynamic performance of PHVC in the design stage.

  • Q-switched Waveguide $CO_{2}$ laser using polygon mirror were constructed and their output characteristics were measured. Waveguide was made of the beryllium oxide tube of inner diameter of 2 mm, outer diameter of 20 mm, and length of 200 mm. A flat ZnSe output coupler of 80% reflectivity was placed on the 9 mm distance from the end of the waveguide. Convex lens was used to reduce the coupling loss between the polygon mirror and the waveguide. The polygon mirror was located behind of convex lens. With this condition, continuous output of the laser were measured as 1.2 W. In the Q-switched mode. pulse width 120 ns were measured with rotational speed 7,559 RPM. and peak power of up to 250 W. 250 W.

  • This paper deals with the magnetic properties under the rotational magnetic field on the electrical steel sheet by using Single Sheet Tester with two excitation coils. Actually, the magnetic flux of stator cores in running motors have the behaviour of rotating and alternating flux. In order to improve motor characteristics, it is require to estimate these magnetic properties. When the magnetic field vectors are rotating around in the plane of the sheet during one period of cycle, the magnetization properties and the core loss are measured and then, the results are compared with the magnetic properties obtained by the alternating magnetic fields.

  • Recently, international attention has been focused on the development of non-traditional energy resources such as shale gas and oil sands, due to the steep increase in the demand for natural resources. The materials incorporated in an oil gas plant module experience extreme environments, and are prone to various problem such as fracture, corrosion and abrasion due to low-temperature brittleness. In order to improve the plant life, it is necessary to perform characteristics study and performance evaluation of the materials. In particular, this paper explains the main set of materials which are most frequently used in oil sands plant project. In order to investigate wear characteristics, the authors carried out abrasive wear tests of TP 316, stainless steel and SS 400, structural rolled steel. For the analysis of the abrasive wear resistance of an oil sands plant, the authors carried out the test according to ASTM G 105 "Standard Test Method for Conducting Wet Sand/Rubber Wheel Abrasion Test" standard guidelines. The authors have derived the results from the data associated with the loss of mass with respect to wear rate. During the test, for a given wear length for 10,000 revolutions, the rotational speed and applied force of the rubber wheel were varied.

  • A pepper harvester using a pair of counter rotating helically wound cylinders as a pepper removal mechanism has been developed. Pepper harvesting by machines under the customary cultivation practice was expected to lower land productivity, that most farmers were concerned about. As one way to compensate for loss in land productivity by machine harvest, experts on pepper cultivation suggested change of both varieties and plant density per area. From the view of machine design, their suggestion implied that distance between rows should be narrower and height of the pepper removal mechanism could be shorter. Experiments to improve perfect pepper recovery ratio and to reduce size of the pepper removal mechanism was accomplished. In order to be a economically feasible harvester, minimum pepper recovery ratio was required to be greater or equal to 80%. The research goal was achieved by both reducing the diameter of the wire-helices from 30 cm to 18 cm and increasing rotational speed of the wire-helices up to 425 rpm. The best perfect pepper recovery ratio was 82.3%. Validity of experiment design and interpretation on statistical analysis were discussed. To understand the pepper removal mechanism properly, a pepper removal theory based physics was judged to be necessary.

  • A series of hydraulic tests of a Lox pump are performed using water at a room temperature. According to the test results, the Lox pump satisfies its design requirement but both the head and the efficiency do not fully follow the conventional similarity rule. The deviation of the head from the rule is assumed to be due to the increased volute loss at high rotational speed. Furthermore, it is found that when the pump rotates with the flow ratio less then the design requirement the leakage flowrate seems to be increased.

  • We have studied a field sequential liquid crystal display (FSLCD) with electrically controlled birefringence (ECB). The ECB mode exhibiting fast response time, high transmittance, low operating voltage and adequate viewing angle. The positive liquid crystal (LC) is better than negative LC on dielectric anisotropy, birefringence and rotational viscosity. Because $K_{11}$ value out of the elastic coefficient of LC is also larger than $K_{22}$ value, decay time of VA-ECB is advantage. However, the transmittance & response time reduced with decreasing the cell gap. This drawback can be overcome by using LC with high ${\Delta}n$ but VA-ECB is occured loss of light efficiency because the $\gamma$ value increased by high ${\Delta}n$ of LC. Consequently, the HA-ECB mode is one of strongest candidate for FSLCD application.

  • Torque characteristics of a 75-tonf turbopump turbine was analyzed using the turbine performance test result. Specific torque of the subject turbine could be expressed as a linear function of corrected rotor speed at a fixed pressure ratio and it has been confirmed by the test result. It also found that corrected rotor speed-specific torque characteristics does not change anymore if the turbine pressure ratio is set bigger than a certain value. Using the turbine torque characteristics and pyro-starter performance test results, rotational speed development behavior of the turbopump was predicted. Prediction revealed that the lap time reaching 50% of turbopump design speed is less than 0.7 second. Effect of the thermal loss between pyro-starter and turbopump was negligible.

  • A high-power Yb:YAG thin-disc laser with radial or azimuthal polarization incorporating an intracavity S-waveplate is reported. Depending on the rotational angle of the S-waveplate placed in the cavity, a Yb:YAG thin-disc laser yields 10.8 W and 10.2 W of continuous-wave outputs with radial and azimuthal polarization for an incident pump power of 131 W, corresponding to slope efficiencies of 22.9% and 23.7%, respectively. The output characteristics for each polarization state were investigated in detail by analyzing the insertion loss and the mode overlap efficiency due to the S-waveplate. Further prospects for power scaling will be discussed.

  • We analyzed the wear characterization of $Si_3N_4$ ceramics according to the amount of added $SiO_2$ nanocolloid. The test specimen was prepared by hot-press sintering at 35 MPa and 2123 K in an $N_2$ gas atmosphere for 1 h. A wear test was performed with a block-on-ring tester, and the test conditions were as follows: (1) the ring with a diameter of 35 mm had a rotational speed of 50 rpm; (2) the load was 9.8 N; and (3) the temperature was $25^{\circ}C$. The test results show that $Si_3N_4$ ceramics have a friction coefficient of about 1.0 and a wear loss of about 0.02 mm. Of the specimens used this study, the test specimen with 1.3 wt% of added $SiO_2$ nanocolloid has the best wear resistance because it has the lowest friction coefficient and the smallest wear loss. This specimen also has the highest Vickers hardness and bending strength. In this study, the friction coefficient is inversely proportional to the hardness and bending strength.
