The force coefficients of rotating plates in the acceleration stage will vary with rotation rate from 0 to stable rotation rate w0, which are important for quasi-steady theory of plate-like windborne debris to simulate the trajectory. In this paper, a wind tunnel experiment is carried out to study the effects of geometry and the Reynolds number on the variations of mean force coefficients of rotating plates. The rotational lift coefficients are sensitive to both geometry effect and Reynolds number effect, while the rotational drag and moment coefficients are only sensitive to geometry effect. In addition, new empirical formulas for the rotational lift coefficient and moment coefficients are proposed. Its accuracy is verified by comparing the predicted results with existing test data. Based on the experimental data of rotating plates, a new rotational force model for quasi-steady theory, which can be applied to a wider scope, is proposed to calculate the trajectory of plate-like windborne debris. The results show that the new model provides a better match with the tested trajectories than previous quasi-steady theories.
The present study has numerically investigated two-dimensional laminar flow over a steadily rotating circular cylinder with a uniform planar shear, where the free-stream velocity varies linearly across the cylinder. It aims to find the combined effect of rotation and shear on the flow. Numerical simulations using the immersed boundary method are performed for the ranges of $-2.5{\le}\alpha{\le}2.5$ and $0{\le}K{\le}0.2$ at a fixed Reynolds number of Re=100, where a and K are respectively the dimensionless rotational speed and velocity gradient. Results show that the positive shear, with the upper side having the higher free-stream velocity than the lower one, favors the effect of the counter-clockwise rotation $(\alpha<0)$ but countervails that of the clockwise rotation $(\alpha>0)$. Accordingly, the absolute critical rotational speed, below which vortex shedding occurs, decreases with increasing K for $(\alpha>0)$, but increases for $\alpha>0$. The vortex shedding frequency increases with increasing \alpha (including the negative) and the variation becomes steeper with increasing K. The mean lift slightly decreases with increasing K regardless of the rotational direction. However, the mean drag and the amplitudes of the lift- and drag-fluctuations strongly depend on the direction. They all decrease with increasing K for $\alpha>0$, but increase for $\alpha<0$. Flow statistics as well as instantaneous flow folds are presented to identify the characteristics of the flow and then to understand the underlying mechanism.
The turbopump inducer cavitation is very important for the success of a liquid rocket engine. In this study, the performance test and cavitation performance test were carried out at various rotational speeds with two inducers of different diameter. The rotational speed was varied by 4000, 6000, and 8000 rpm, and the size effect was tested for the normal inducer and twice-enlarged one. The hydraulic performance results showed that the similarity was satisfied over the entire test range of the present study. The blade thickness effect was examined and showed that the increased blade thickness resulted in decreased efficiency and worse cavitation performance for the large tip clearance. The cavitation performance test results showed that the breakdown NPSH increased as the flow coefficient, and was not affected by the rotational speed.
The turbopump inducer cavitation is very important for the success of a Liquid rocket engine. In this study the performance test and cavitation performance test were carried out at various rotational speed with two different diameter inducers. The rotational speed were varied 4000, 6000, 8000 rpm and the variation to the diameter of an inducer were taken as design size and 2 times enlarged size. The major results of the present study were as follows. 1. The hydraulic performance results showed that the similarity was met over the entire test range of the present study. 2. The blade thickness effect was examined and showed that the increased blade thickness resulted in decreased efficiency and worse cavitation performance for large tip clearance. 3. The cavitation performance test results showed that the breakdown NPSH increases as the flow coefficient and does not affected by the rotational speed.
This paper deals with a theoretical method for the design of a biased asymmetric preswirl stator propulsion system which has been used to increase efficiency by the recovery of a propeller slipstream rotational energy by the counter rotating flow of a stator. In the case of full slow-speed ship, the upward flow is generated at the propeller plane by the after body hull form. The generated upward flow cancells the rotating flow of the propeller at the starboard part while it increases at port part. A biased asymmetric preswirl stator propulsion system consists of three blades at the port and one blade at the starboard which can recover the biased rotating flow effectively. This paper provides the design concept which gives more simple and a high degree of efficiency. The model tests for the designed compound propulsion system will be carried out later.
Lock-on characteristics of flow around a circular cylinder oscillating rotationally with a relatively high forcing frequency have been investigated experimentally. Dominant governing parameters are Reynolds number (Re), angular amplitude of oscillation (${\theta}_A$), and frequency ratio $F_R=f_f/f_n,\;where\;f_f$ is a forcing frequency and $f_n$ is a natural frequency of vortex shedding. Experiments were carried out under the conditions of $Re=4.14{\times}10^3,\;{\pi}/90{\leq}{\theta_A}{\leq}{\pi}/3,\;and\;F_R=1.0$. The effect of this active flow control technique on the lock-on flow characteristics of the cylinder wake was evaluated with wake velocity measurements and spectral analysis of hot-wire signals. The rotational oscillation modifies the flow structure of near wake significantly. The lock-on phenomenon always occurs at $F_R=1.0$, regardless of the angular amplitude ${\theta}_A$. In addition, when the angular amplitude is less than a certain value, the lock-on characteristics appear only at $F_R=1.0$,. The range of lock-on phenomena expands and vortex formation length is decreased, as the angular amplitude increases. The rotational oscillation create a small-scale vortex structure in the region just near the cylinder surface. At ${\theta}_A=60^{\circ}$, the drag coefficient was reduced about $43.7\%$ at maximum.
Birds and insects flap their wings to fly in the air and they can change their wing motions to do steering and maneuvering. Therefore, we created various wing motions with the parameters which affected flapping motion and evaluated the aerodynamic characteristics about those cases in this study. As the wing rotational velocity was fast and the rotational timing was advanced, the measured aerodynamic forces showed drastic increase near the end of stroke. The mean lift coefficient was increased until angle of attack of $50^{\circ}$ and showed the maximum value of 1.0. The maximum mean lift to drag ratio took place at angle of attack of $20^{\circ}$. Flow fields were also visualized around the wing using particle image velocimetry (PIV). From the flow visualization, leading-edge vortex was not shed at mid-stroke until angle of attack of $50^{\circ}$. But it was begun to shed at angle of attack of $60^{\circ}$.
Spectroscopic and electrostatic probe measurements were made to examine plasma characteristics with or without a metal plate for a 10-㎾-class direct-current arcjet Heat fluxes into the plate from the plasma were also evaluated with a Nickel slug and thermocouple arrangement. Ammonia and mixtures of nitrogen and hydrogen were used. The NH$_3$ and $N_2$+3H$_2$ plasmas in the nozzle and in the downstream plume without a plate were in thermodynamical nonequilibrium states. As a result, the H-atom electronic excitation temperature and the $N_2$ molecule-rotational excitation temperature intensively decreased downstream in the nozzle although the NH molecule-rotational excitation temperature did not show an axial decrease. Each temperature was kept in a small range in the plume without a plate except for the NH rotational temperature for NH$_3$ gas. On the other hand, as approaching the plate, the thermodynamical nonequilibrium plasma came to be a temperature-equilibrium one because the plasma flow tended to stagnate in front of the plate. The electron temperature had a small radial variation near the plate. Both the electron number density and the heat flux decreased radially outward, and an increase in H$_2$ mole fraction raised them at a constant radial position. In cases with NH$_3$ and $N_2$+3H$_2$ a large number of NH radical with a radially wide distribution was considered to cause a large amount of energy loss, i.e., frozen flow loss, for arcjet thrusters.
A small mixed-type turbine with a diameter of 19.9 mm has been substituted for a rotational part of pencil-type air tool. Usually, a vane-type rotor is applied to the rotational part of the air tool. However, the vane-type rotor has some problems, such as friction, abrasion, and necessity of accurate assembly etc.,. These problems make the life time of the vane-type air tool short, but air tools operated by mixed-type turbines are free of friction and abrasion because the turbine rotor dose not contact with the casing. Moreover, it is assembled easily because of no axis offset. These characteristics are merits for using air tools, but loss of power is inevitable on a non-contacting type rotor due to flow loss, tip clearance loss, and profile loss etc.,. In this study, four different rotors are tested, and their characteristics are investigated by measuring the specific output power. Additionally, optimum nozzle location against the rotor is studied. Output powers are obtained through measured pressure, temperature, torque, rotational speed, and flow rate. The experimental results obtained with four different rotors show that the rotor blade shape greatly influences to the performance, and the optimum nozzle location exists near the mid span of the rotor.
The gun-type gas burner adopted in this study is generally composed of eight slits and swirl vanes. Thus, this paper is studied to investigate the effect of slits and swirl vanes on the turbulent flow fields in the horizontal plane of gas swirl burner with a cone type baffle plate measured by using X-probe from hot-wire anemometer system. This experiment is carried out at flow rate 450 $\ell$/min in the test section of subsonic wind tunnel. The axial mean velocity component in the case of burner model with only swirl vanes shows the characteristic that spreads more remarkably toward the radial direction than axial one, it does, however, directly opposite tendency in the case of burner model with only slits. Consequently. both slits and swirl vanes composing of gun-type gas burner play an important role in decrease of the speed near slits and increase of the flow speed in the central part of a burner because the biggest speed spurted from slits encircles rotational flow by swirl vanes and it drives main flow toward the axial direction. Moreover, the turbulent intensities and turbulent kinetic energy of gun-type gas burner are distributed with a fairly bigger size within X/R<0.6410 than burner models which have only slits or swirl vanes because the rotational flow by swirl vanes and the fast jet flow by slits increase flow mixing, diffusion, and mean velocity gradient effectively.
