In the present study, the effect of blade rotation on blade heat transfer is investigated by comparing with the heat transfer results for the stationary blade. The experiments are conducted in a low speed annular cascade with a single stage turbine and the turbine stage is composed of sixteen guide vanes and blades. The chord length and the height of the tested blade are 150 mm and about 125 mm, respectively. The blade has a flat tip and the mean tip clearance is 2.5% of the blade chord. A naphthalene sublimation method is used to measure detailed mass transfer coefficient on the blade. For the experiments, the inlet Reynolds number is $Re_c=1.5{\times}10^5$, which results in the blade rotation speed of 255.8 rpm. Blade rotation induces a relative motion between the blade and the shroud as well as a periodic variation of incoming flow. Therefore, different heat/mass transfer patterns are observed on the rotating blade, especially near the tip and on the tip. The relative motion reduces the tip leakage flow through the tip gap, which results in the reduction of the tip heat transfer. However, the effect of the tip leakage flow on the blade surface is increased because the tip leakage vortex is formed closer to the surface than the stationary case. The overall heat/mass transfer on the shroud is not affected much by the blade rotation.
Background: The tongue in groove technique (TIG) is a useful technique for the correction of the nasal tip projection and the nasolabial angle. The purpose of this study was to determine the utility of this technique for nasal tip rotation and projection correction in the Iranian society. Methods: This is a retrospective clinical trial study of 20 patients undergoing open septo-rhinoplasty using TIG technique from January 2017 to August 2019 at the oral and maxillofacial unit of Bu Ali Hospital and private sector. Preoperative and postoperative profile view photographs were compared to assess the changes in tip projection and rotation. Results: Fifteen patients (75%) had normal angular size, and 5 of them (25%) were not within the normal range after the surgery. The Fisher exact test showed that this success was statistically significant (P = 0.006). Ten patients (50%) had normal projection size, postoperatively. The Fisher exact test showed that this effect was statistically significant (P < 0.01) Conclusion: The study demonstrated the benefit of TIG on the correction of nasal tip projection and rotation.
This paper presents an end-point of 1-link flexible robot arm with a tip-mass by using self-turning fuzzy algorithm. The arm is mounted on a translational mechanism driven by a ballscrew, whose rotation is controlled by CD servomotor. Tip position is controlled so that it follows a desired position. A feedback signal is composed of both the tip-displacement error and change in error. This paper gives the experimental tip responses according to the variations of tip-mass and beam-length, and also showes the effects of reducing the residual vibrations occuring at the end-point.
Background In lower lateral cartilage (LLC) surgery, cephalic trimming poses risks for the collapse of the internal and external nasal valves, pinched nose, and drooping deformity. The cephalic lateral crural advancement (CLCA) technique presented herein was aimed at using a flap to increase nasal tip rotation and support the lateral crus, in addition to the internal and external nasal valves, by avoiding grafts without performing excision. Methods This study included 32 patients (18 female and 14 male) and the follow-up period for patients having undergone primer open rhinoplasty was 12 months. The LLC was elevated from the vestibular skin using the CLCA flap. A cephalic incision was performed without cephalic trimming. Two independent flaps were formed while preserving the scroll ligament complex. The CLCA flap was advanced onto the lower lateral crus while leaving the scroll area intact. The obtained data were analyzed retrospectively. Results The mean age of the patients was 31.6 years (range, 20-51 years). The Rhinoplasty Outcome Examination scores after 12 months varied from 90 to100 points, and 93% of patients reported perfect satisfaction. At a 1-year follow-up, the patients' nasal patency (visual analogue scale) rose from 4.56±1.53 (out of 10) to 9.0±0.65 (P<0.001). Conclusions The CLCA flap led to better nasal tip definition by protecting the scroll area, increasing tip rotation, and supporting the internal and external nasal valves without cephalic excision.
Two cases with circumferential grooves were designed for a transonic compressor, and 3-D numerical simulations were conducted for stall mechanism at three representative speeds. A conclusion can be drawn from the comparison between compressors with or without casing treatment that: with the rising of rotation speed, stall margin increases dramatically under the help of casing treatments, and the case with middle grooves has reasonable compromise between stall margin increment and efficiency cutting. At lower speed, the increment reduces, and grooves at the back of blade tip have more influence on stall margin. Further investigation shows there is a transition in mechanism of compressor stall with the decline of rotational speed: at high rotation speed, the expansion of stall margin mainly results from the suppression of tip leakage vortex by casing treatments, yet it benefits more from the depression of boundary layer separation from suction surface of blade tip.
This paper presents an end-point control of 1-link flexible arm tip-mass by using fuzzy position control algorithm. The arm is mounted on a translational mechanism driven by a ballscrew, whose rotation is controlled by a DC servomotor. Tip position is controlled so that it follows a desired position. Feedback signal is composed of both tip displacement error and change of error. This paper gives tip responses according to the variations of tip-mass and beam length, and the effects of reducing the residual vibrations occurring at the end-point. In the case of the residual vibrations of tip displacement, fuzzy control has better results than the PD-control.
Characteristics of steady and unsteady cavitation in a turbopump inducer were investigated in this paper. To see the effect of tip clearance on the inducer performance, three cases of tip clearance were tested. The helical inducer, which has two blades with inlet tip blade angle of 7.8 degree and tip solidity of 2.7, was tested in the water. In the non-cavitating condition, the inducer head decreased with increase in the tip clearance. Rotating cavitation and cavitation surge were observed through unsteady pressure measurements at the inducer inlet. The cell number and propagation speed of the rotating cavitation were determined through cross-correlation analysis. During the rotating cavitation one cell rotated at the same rotational speed as that of the inducer rotation and the cavitation surge did not rotate. The critical cavitation number increased with increase in the tip clearance at the same flow rate, but the change of critical cavitation number was small at the nominal flow rate.
It is well-known that high anisotropic characteristic of turbulent flow field is dominant inside tip leakage vortex. This anisotropic nature of turbulence invalidates the use of the conventional isotropic eddy viscosity turbulence model based on the Boussinesq assumption. In this study, to check whether an anisotropic turbulence model is superior to the isotropic ones or not, the results obtained from steady-state Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes simulations based on the RNG ${\kappa}-{\varepsilon}$ and the Reynolds stress model in two test cases, such as a linear compressor cascade and a forward-swept axial-flow fan, are compared with experimental data. Through the comparative study of turbulence models, it is clearly shown that the Reynolds stress model, which can express the production term and body-force term induced by system rotation without any modeling, should be used to predict the complex tip leakage flow, including the locus of tip leakage vortex center, quantitatively.
The present study investigated local heat/mass transfer characteristics on the surface of the rotating turbine blade with various incidence angles. The experiments are conducted in a low speed annular cascade with a single stage turbine. The blade has a flat tip with the mean tip clearance of 2.5% of the blade chord. A naphthalene sublimation method is used to measure detailed mass transfer coefficient on the blade. At design condition, the inlet Reynolds number is $Re_c=1.5{\times}10^5$ which results in the blade rotation speed of 255.8 rpm. Also, the effect of off-design condition is examined with various incidence angles between $-15^{\circ}$ and $+7{\circ}$. The results indicated that the incidence angle has significant effects on the blade surface heat transfer. In mid-span region, the laminar separation region on the pressure side is reduced and the laminar flow region on the suction side shrinks with increasing incidence angle. Near the tip, the effect of tip leakage flow increases in span wise and axial directions as the incidence angle decreases because the tip leakage flow is formed near the suction side surface. However, the effect of tip leakage flow is reduced with positive incidence angle.
Background Nasal tip support is an essential consideration for rhinoplasty in East Asians. There are many techniques to improve tip projection, and among them, the columellar strut is the most popular technique. However, the conventional design is less supportive for rotating the tip. The amount of harvestable septal cartilage is relatively small in East Asians. For an optimal outcome, we propose an L-shaped design for applying the columellar strut. Methods To evaluate the anthropometric outcomes, the change in nasal tip projection and the columella-labial angle were analyzed by comparing preoperative and postoperative photographs. The anthropometric study group consisted of 25 patients who underwent the same operative technique of an L-shaped strut graft using septal cartilage and were followed up for more than 9 months. Results There were statistically significant differences between the preoperative and postoperative values in the nasal tip projection ratio and columella-labial angle. We did not observe any complications directly related to the L-shaped columellar strut in the anthropometric study group. Conclusions The L-shaped columellar strut has advantages not only in the controlling of tip projection and rotation, but in that it needs a smaller amount of cartilage compared to the conventional septal extension graft. It can therefore be an alternative technique for nasal tip plasty when there is an insufficient amount of harvestable septal cartilage.
