Mean flow and turbulence properties of developing turbulent flows in a 90 degree square bend with span-wise rotation are measured by a hot-wire anemometer. A slanted wire is rotated into 6 orientations and the voltage outputs from them are combined to obtain the mean velocity and the Reynolds stress components. Combined effects of the centrifugal and Coriolis forces due to the curvature and the rotation of the bend on the mean motion and turbulence structures are investigated experimentally. Results show that the two body forces can either enhance or counteract each other depending on the flow direction in the bend.
The present research deals with the time harmonic deformation in transversely isotropic magneto thermoelastic solid with two temperature (2T), rotation and without energy dissipation due to inclined load. Lord-Shulman theory has been formulated for this mathematical model. The entire thermo-elastic medium is rotating with a uniform angular velocity. The Fourier transform techniques have been used to find the solution to the problem. The displacement components, stress components and conductive temperature distribution with the horizontal distance are computed in the transformed domain and further calculated in the physical domain using numerical inversion techniques. The effect of time harmonic source and rotation is depicted graphically on the resulting quantities.
The aim of this study was to analyze the momentum and heat transfer of a rotating nanofluid with conducting spherical dust particles. The fluid flows over a stretching surface under the influence of an external magnetic field. By applying similarity transformations, the governing partial differential equations were trans-formed into nonlinear coupled ordinary differential equations. These equations were solved with the built-in function bvp4c in MATLAB. Moreover, the effects of the rotation parameter ω, magnetic field parameter M, mass concentration of the dust particles α, and volume fraction of the nano particles 𝜙, on the velocity and temperature profiles of the fluid and dust particles were considered. The results agree well with those in published papers. According to the result the hikes in the rotation parameter ω decrease the local Nusselt number, and the increasing volume fraction of the nano particles 𝜙 increases the local Nusselt number. Moreover the friction factor along the x and y axes increases with increasing volume fraction of the nano particles 𝜙.
Measurements of the leakage flow in the shrouded cavity were performed in axial compressor cascades at $Re=2.6{\times}10^5$. This paper describes the effects of the leakage flow tangential velocity on kinematics of the leakage flow in the shrouded cavity and consequent overall loss and exit flow turning at stator blade row downstream. Flow data and flow visualization images consistently indicate that leakage flow circumferentially migrates 2, 4 and 5 blade passages in the direction of rotation for ${\upsilon}_y/c=0.09$, 0.35 and 0.45, respectively where ${\upsilon}_y$ is the leakage tangential velocity and c is the mainstream velocity. The leakage flow contracts to a jet across the seal-tooth resulting in an increase in the leakage axial velocity-doubling the leakage axial velocity in upstream cavity compared to that in the downstream cavity. Consequently, two flow regions are distinguished before and after the seal-tooth. As increasing the leakage tangential velocity, the overall loss downstream of stator blade row decreases and the exit flow turning in the range of span. from the hub endwall to 15% increases while the decreases in the flow turning from 15% to 30% span is observed.

We present the spatially resolved kinematics of ionized gas and stars along the major axis of 9 pseudo bulge galaxies. Using the high quality long-slit spectra obtained with the FOCAS at the Subaru telescope, we measured the flux, velocity, and velocity dispersion of the [OIII] and $H{\beta}$ lines to determine the size of the narrow-line region, rotation curve, and the radial profile of velocity dispersions. We compare ionized gas kinematics and stellar kinematics to investigate whether ionized gas shows any signs of outflows and whether stars and ionized gas show the same sigma-dip feature (i.e., decrease of velocity dispersion) at the very center.

A new algorithm for measuring 3-D velocity components of high speed flows were developed using a digital image processing technique. The measuring system consists of three CCD cameras an optical instrument called AOM a digital image grabber and a host computer. The images of mov-ing particles arranged spatially on a rotation plate are taken by two or three CCD cameras and are recorderd onto the image grabber or a video tape recoder. The three-dimensionl velocity com-ponents of the particles are automatically obtained by the developed algorithm In order to verify the validity of this technique three-dimensional velocity data sets obtained from a computer simu-lation of a backward facing step flow were used as test data for the algorithm. an uncertainty analysis associated with the present algorithm is systematically evaluated, The present technique is proved to be used as a tookl for the measurement of unsteady three-dimensional fluid flows.
This paper is the first investigation on the evaluation methods of flow characteristics in the steady bench. For this purpose, several assumptions used in the steady flow evaluation are examined, comparing the measured and/or processed results by the conventional impulse swirl meter with the ones by the real velocity through a particle image velocimetry. The results show that the most questionable assumption is the solid rotation of swirl. With regard to this assumption, the flow characteristics by the conventional methods are distorted seriously by both of the eccentricity of the swirl center and non-uniform velocity profile along the cylinder radial direction. In addition, the cylinder axial velocity distribution also has the great effect on the flow characteristics.
This paper deals with a robust fine seek controller design problem with multiple constraints using a genetic algorithm. A robust $H\infty$ constraint is introduced to attenuate effectively velocity disturbance caused by the eccentric rotation of the disk. A weighting function is optimally selected based on the estimation of velocity disturbance and the estimated minimum velocity loop gain. A robust velocity loop constraint is considered to minimize the variances of the velocity loop gain and bandwidth against the uncertainties of fine actuator. Finally, a robust fine seek controller is obtained by solving a genetic algorithm with an LMI condition and an appropriate objective function. The proposed controller design method is applied to the fine seek control system of a DVD recording device and is evaluated through the experimental results.
We investigate the effects of planetary rotation on the exospheres of the earth and Mars with simple collisionless models. We develope a numerical code that computes exospheric densities by integrating velocity functions at the exobase with a 10 point Gauss method. It is assumed in the model that atoms above the exobase altitude move collisionlessly on an orbit under the planet's gravity. Temperatures and densities at the exobase over the globe are adopted from MSIS-86 for the earth and from Bougher et al's MTGCM for Mars. For both the earth and Mars, the rotation affects the exospheric density distribution significantly in two ways: (1) the variation of the exospheric density distribution is shifted toward the rotational direction with respect to the variation at the exobase, (2) the exospheric densities in general increase over the non-rotating case. We find that the rotational effects are more significant for lower thermospheric temperatures. Both the enhancement of densities and shift of the exospheric distribution due to rotation have not been considered in previous models of Martian exosphere. Our non-spherical distribution with the rotational effects should contribute to refining the hot oxygen corona models of Mars which so far assume simple geometry. Our model will also help in analyzing exospheric data to be measured by the upcoming Nozomi mission to Mars.
