  • Recent trends in information storage devices disk are the transition from CD drives to high density DVD drives, the development of writable disk drives and the appearance of several high-density portable disk drives. In some flexible disk drives, self-excited disk vibrations become severe as rotation speed increases near or above critical speed. Critical speeds of CD/DVD, ASMO and floppy disks are experimentally measured and compared with analytical predictions. Flutter instability caused by aero-induced disk vibration at high speeds are experimentally observed. In ASMO, three nodal-diameter mode experiences its flutter at 8750 rpm with the frequency lock-on phenomenon. The CD/DVD disk does not have the aero-induce flutter up to 14,000 rpm.

  • In this paper, we analyse and present mechanical dynamic characteristics of a micro-machined vibrating silicon ring gyroscope which can measure rates of turn about three orthogonal axes. The ring gyroscope has a ring connected to the gyroscope main body by support-ligaments which are arranged with cyclic symmetry. The natural modes of its vibration can be distinguished into the in-plane motion and the out-of-plane motion which are coupled by the gyro-effect due to the rotation of the gyroscope main body. • This paper proposes a new design of shape memory alloy (SMA) wire actuated gripper for open mode operation. SMA can generate smooth muscle movements during actuation which make them potentially good contenders in designing grippers. The principle of the shape memory alloy gripper is to convert the linear displacement of the SMA wire actuator into the angular displacement of the gripping jaw. Steady state analysis is performed to design the wire diameter of the bias spring for a known SMA wire. The gripper is designed to open about an angle of $22.5^{\circ}$ when actuated using pulsating electric current from a constant current source. The safe operating power range of the gripper is determined and verified theoretically. Experimental evaluation for the uncontrolled gripper showed a rotation of $19.97^{\circ}$. Forced cooling techniques were employed to speed up the cooling process. The gripper is simple and robust in design (single movable jaw), easy to fabricate, low cost, and exhibits wide handling capabilities like longer object handling time and handling wide sizes of objects with minimum utilization of power since power is required only to grasp and release operations.

  • As the disk rotation speed increases in information storage devices, aerodynamically excited disk vibration is induced by airflow around the disk. This paper investigates theoretical and experimental studies on the disk flutter instability in CD-ROM drives. The effect of airflow on the disk vibration is modeled as the distributed damping and lift forces. By analyzing the eigenvalue problem of the aero-elastic coupling model, we introduces a novel technique to predict the flutter speed by comparing experimental natural frequencies with analytical ones of a disk rotating in vacuum. The new method predicts that the vibration mode with two nodal diameters in a CD disk experiences the first flutter instability at 12,000 rpm.

  • The effects of secondary phase morphology and carbon content on the plastic deformation of 0.2C-1.5Si-1.5mn TRIP(TRansformed Induced Plasticity) steel have been investigated at various annealing and bainitic transformation temperatures. The morphology of ferrite and secondary phases was controlled by the annealing temperature and the distribution of secondary phase was controlled by the bainitic transformation temperature. The secondary phase contributed to elongation and/or UTS depending on the ferrite morphology which determined deformation mode simple elongation or rotation of secondary phase along the tensile direction In case of the sample containing the granular type retained austenite the elongation was improved as carbon stabilized the austenite phase. If the film-shape retained austenite in acicular ferrite was dominant however UTS was enhanced as the transformed martensite was hardened by carbon.

  • A new method is presented to design RF filters without the Similarity Transform of their coupling coefficient matrix as circuit parameters which is very tedious due to pivoting and deciding rotation angles needed during the iterations. The transfer function of a filter is directly used for the design and its desired form is derived by the optimized rational-function fitting technique. A 3rd order Coaxial Lowpass filter and an 8th order dual-mode elliptic integral function response filter are taken as an example to validate the proposed method.

  • This investigation is to study the effect of gravitational field and diffusion on a microstretch thermoelastic medium heating by a non-Gaussian laser beam. The problem was studied in the context of the dual-phase-lag model. The normal mode analysis is used to solve the problem to obtain the exact expressions for the non-dimensional displacement components, the micro-rotation, the stresses, and the temperature distribution. The effect of time parameter, heat flux parameter and gravity response of three theories of thermoelasticity i.e. dual-phase-lag model (DPL), Lord and Shulman theory (L-S) and coupled theory (CT) on these quantities have been depicted graphically for a particular model.

  • Dynamic behavior of flexural-torsional coupled vibration of rotating beams using the Rayleigh-Ritz method with orthogonal polynomials as basis functions is studied. Performance of various orthogonal polynomials is compared to each other in terms of their efficiency and accuracy in determining the required natural frequencies. Orthogonal polynomials and functions studied in the present work are: Legendre, Chebyshev, integrated Legendre, modified Duncan polynomials, the special trigonometric functions used in conjunction with Hermite cubics, and beam characteristic orthogonal polynomials. A total of 5 cases of beam boundary conditions and rotation are studied for their natural frequencies. The obtained natural frequencies and mode shapes are compared to those available in various references and the results for coupled flexural-torsional vibrations are especially compared to both previously available references and with those obtained using NASTRAN finite element package. Among all the examined orthogonal functions, Legendre orthogonal polynomials are the most efficient in overall CPU time, mainly because of ease in performing the integration required for determining the stiffness and mass matrices.

  • We report viewing angle characteristics of the Ultra-FFS TFT-LCD. The FFS mode is known to exhibit both a wide viewing angle and high transmittance, owing to the approximated in-plane rotation of the LC director. Nevertheless, in the bright state, the device shows bluish and yellowish color parallel and perpendicular to the LC director at off-normal directions since the LC director rotates onl.v in one direction, and in addition, the grey scale inversion exists in large oblique viewing angle. However, the Ultra-FFS shows no grey scale inversion and no color shift in wide viewing angle range.
