  • This paper presents a new approach to translation and rotation invariant feature extraction for image texture retrieval. For the rotation invariant feature extraction, we invent angular projection along angular frequency in Polar coordinate system. The translation and rotation invariant feature vector for representing texture images is constructed by the averaged magnitude and the standard deviations of the magnitude of the Fourier transform spectrum obtained by the proposed angular projection. In order to easily implement the angular projection, the Radon transform is employed to obtain the Fourier transform spectrum of images in the Polar coordinate system. Then, angular projection is applied to extract the feature vector. We present our experimental results to show the robustness against the image rotation and the discriminatory capability for different texture images using MPEG-7 data set. Our Experiment result shows that the proposed rotation and translation invariant feature vector is effective in retrieval performance for the texture images with homogeneity, isotropy and local directionality.

  • This paper presents a method of sonar grid map matching for topological place recognition. The proposed method provides an effective rotation invariant grid map matching method. A template grid map is firstly extracted for reliable grid map matching by filtering noisy data in local grid map. Using the template grid map, the rotation invariant grid map matching is performed by Ring Projection Transformation. The rotation invariant grid map matching selects candidate locations which are regarded as representative point for each node. Then, the topological place recognition is achieved by calculating matching probability based on the candidate location. The matching probability is acquired by using both rotation invariant grid map matching and the matching of distance and angle vectors. The proposed method can provide a successful matching even under rotation changes between grid maps. Moreover, the matching probability gives a reliable result for topological place recognition. The performance of the proposed method is verified by experimental results in a real home environment.

  • In recent years, Tracking-Learning-Detection(TLD) system has been widely used as a detection and tracking algorithm for vision sensors. While conventional algorithms are vulnerable to occlusion, and changes in illumination and appearances, TLD system is capable of robust tracking by conducting tracking, detection, and learning in real time. However, the detection and tracking algorithms of TLD system utilize rotation-variant features, and the margin of tracking error becomes greater when an object makes a full out-of-plane rotation. Thus, we propose a rotation-invariant TLD system(RI-TLD). we propose a simplified average orientation histogram and rotation matrix for a rotation inference algorithm. Experimental results with various tracking tests demonstrate the robustness and efficiency of the proposed system.

  • The design of an automatic aircraft recognition system involves two parts. The first part is extraction of invariant features independent of scale, rotation and translation. The second part is determination of optimal decision procedures, which are needed in the classification process. In this research, we extracted invariant aircraft features regardless of size, rotation and translation using Fourier Descriptors and Zernike Moments and classified using neural networks.

  • 3D object recognition independent of translation and rotation using an ultrasonic sensor array, invariant moment vectors and SOFM(Self Organizing Feature Map) neural networks is presented. Using invariant moment vectors of the acquired 16×8 pixel data of square, rectangular, cylindric and regular triangular blocks, 3D objects could be classified by SOFM neural networks. Invariant moment vectors are constant independent of translation and rotation. The recognition rates for the training and testing data were 95.91% and 92.13%, respectively.

  • A new method to realize 3-dimensional object pattern recognition system using Fourier-based feature extractor has been proposed. The procedure to obtain the invariant feature vector is as follows ; A closed surface is generated by tracing the surface of object using the 3-dimensional polar coordinate. The centroidal distances between object's geometrical center and each closed surface points are calculated. The distance vector is translation invariant. The distance vector is normalized, so the result is scale invariant. The Fourier spectrum of each normalized distance vector is calculated, and the spectrum is rotation invariant. The Fourier-based feature generating from above procedure completely eliminates the effect of variations in translation, scale, and rotation of 3-dimensional object with closed-surface. The experimental results show that the proposed method has a high accuracy.

  • In this paper, we propose a new image descriptor, that is, a rotation invariant histogram of oriented gradients (RIHOG). RIHOG overcomes a disadvantage of the histogram of oriented gradients (HOG), which is very sensitive to image rotation. The HOG only uses magnitude values of a pixel without considering neighboring pixels. The RIHOG uses the accumulated relative magnitude values of corresponding relative orientation calculated with neighboring pixels, which has an effect on reducing the sensitivity to image rotation. The performance of RIHOG is verified via the index of classification and classification of Brodatz texture data.

  • Computing the rotation-invariant distance between image time-series is a time-consuming process that incurs a lot of Euclidean distances for all possible rotations. In this paper we propose an innovative solution that significantly reduces the number of Euclidean distances using the triangular inequality. To this end, we first present the notion of self rotation distance and show that, by using the self rotation distance with the triangular inequality, we can prune many unnecessary distance computations. We next present that only one self-rotation is enough for all self-rotation distances required. Experimental results show that our self rotation distance-based methods outperform the existing methods by up to an order of magnitude.

  • In this paper, an efficient content-based rotation-invariant retrieval of the trademarks is proposed using the edge-direction histogram for a principal symmetry axis and the moment invariants. Rotation invariant retrieval of trademarks is difficult for the conventional retrieval systems because their feature vectors are not rotation-invariant. In this paper, to obtain rotation invariant feature vectors, in addition to invariant moments, the edge-direction histogram for a principal symmetry axis is introduced and is used to solve the bin shift problem of the histogram resulted from the rotated trademark. Performance evaluation has been carried out for a database of 300 kinds of trademarks including 20 kinds of typical trademarks which are reported to be difficult to retrieve when rotated, and the proposed scheme is proved to retrieve trademarks more efficiently, especially for the rotated trademarks, than the conventional methods.

  • In this paper, we proposed a new optical method for the efficient recognition of Korean characters. There are six filters in the proposed method which employed the concepts of amplitude-modulated phase-only filter(AMPOF) and spatial frequency modulation(SFM). Here, amplitude modulation is used to achieve improved correlation discrimination and SFM is to reduce the number of filters. We also used a simplified synthetic discriminant function(SDF) for distortion invariance of input image. In order to recognize the partial rotation invariant Korean characters, the proposed distortion invariant minimum average correlation energy (MACE) filter is synthesized SFM, partial rotation invariant filter (PRIF), AMPOF and MACE for partial rotation invariance in the frequency domain. The advantage of the proposed filters is to supress the sidelobes of cross correlation peak away from the autocorrelation peak and to produce sharp correlation peaks. We performed simulation and optical experiment for some of Korea characters using the proposed method. The results show that the proposed method has more improved discriminant ability and reduced processing time than the conventional methods.
