  • It is necessary to consider a rotor movement in dynamic analysis on the flux distribution of electric machinery by FEM. Therefore, if air-gap domain was subdivided into triangular elements, computation results contain errors due to variation of element shape in air-gap because the nodal points corresponding to the rotor are displaced in analyzing domain for the time difference. In order to reduce this errors, the paper presents a application of a Macro Air-gap Element that interpolation function is obtained analytically and a means to join it with linear triangular elements in the rotating machine or in the linear machine. At the end of paper, setting up analytic domain model, it compares analytic solution with the computation results of Macro Air-gap Element appliction and that of linear triangular element subdivision only to each cases of nodal displacement. And it carries out that errors due to variation of element shape are reduced effectively by application of a Macro air-gap element.

  • Low NPSH and high pressure pumps we widely used for turbopump systems, which have an inducer and operate at high rotating speeds. In this paper, a meanline method has been established for the preliminary design and performance prediction of pumps having an inducer for cavitating or non-cavitating conditions at design or off-design points. The method was applied for the performance prediction of a fuel pump. Predicted performances by the method are shown to be in good agreement with experimental results for cavitating and non-cavitating conditions. The established meanline method can be used for the performance prediction and preliminary design of high speed pumps which have a inducer, impeller and volute.

  • The helical flow regime was investigated by using DPIV when the rotating Reynolds number is small. The wall slits were azimuthally located along the inner wall of outer cylinder and the slits number of each model was 9 and 18, another plain wall model was also studied for comparison purpose. The helical vortex flow regime can be observed in all the three models. The negative temperature gradients determine the direction of the rotation and movement of the helical vortex. But the helical wavy vortex flow can only be found in the plane and 9-slit models. And the result showed that the existence of slit wall accelerated the transition process.

  • The main objective of this study was to clarify the origin of the unsteady flows arising in a mixed-flow vaneless diffuser system and also the effects of physical components of the system. The testing equipment consists of a straight tube, a swirl generator, and a mixed-flow vaneless diffuser. Pressure fluctuations of the flow through the tube and diffuser were measured by using a semiconductor-type pressure transducer and analyzed by an FFT analyzer. In the experiment, the velocity ratio (axial velocity/peripheral velocity) of the internal flow, and the geometric parameters of the diffuser were varied. Two kinds of unsteady flows were measured according to the combination of the components, and the origin of each unsteady flow was clarified. The fundamental frequencies of unsteady flows arose were examined by two-dimensional small perturbation analysis.

  • The development of numerical mathematical model to calculate both the static and dynamic characteristics of a multi-shaft gas turbine consisting of a single combustion chamber, including advanced cycle components such as intercooler and regenerator is presented in this paper. The numerical mathematical model is based on the simplified assumptions that quasi-static characteristic of turbo-machine and injector is used, total pressure loss and heat transfer relation for static calculation neglecting fuel transport time delay can be employed. The supercharger power has a cubical relation to its rotating velocity. The accuracy of each calculation is confirmed by monitoring mass and energy balances with comparative calculations for different time steps of integration. The features of the studied gas turbine scheme are the starting device with compressed air volumes and injector's supercharging the air directly ahead of the combustion chamber.

  • The A lot of rotating machinery are generally used in industrial field and the electrical machinery such as the motor and generator account for the most of the part. Generally motor and generator have electrical loss because of eddy current. So silicon steel sheets are used in order to reduce the electrical loss and furthermore laminated rotor is used for motor and generator to eliminate the electrical loss and heat generation. • The cross-correlation technique has been widely used for leakage detection of buried pipes, and this technique can be successfully applied when the leakage signal has a high signal-to-noise ratio. In the case of a power plant, the measured leakage signals obtained from the sensors may contain background noise and mechanical noise generated by adjacent machinery. In such a case, the conventional method using the cross-correlation function may fail to estimate the leakage point. In order to enhance the leakage estimation capability of a buried pipe in a noisy environment, an improved cross-correlation technique is proposed. It uses a noise rejection technique in the frequency domain to effectively eliminate the tonal noise due to rotating machinery. Experiments were carried out to verify the validity of the proposed method. The results show that even in a tonal noisy environment, the proposed method can provide more reliable means for estimating the time delay of the leakage signals.

  • Slot restrictor air journal bearing has high load capacitance and high stiffness. Stability characteristics of slot restrictor air journal bearing are studied theoretically to forecast and to prevent the whirl instability. As for the high speed rotating machinery, the instability called 'whirl' occurs when the rotor rotates at a speed more than twice the resonant speed. Once the whirl occurs, rubbing contact between the journal and the bearing occurs mostly and the bearing-rotor system is destroyed ultimately. Therefore, the forecasting and prevention of the occurence of whirl instability is a very important subject especially to develop highly efficient high speed machinery. The bearing with the slot restrictor that varies about circumferencial direction is used for the purpose of the prevention of whirl instability.

  • Fatigue, the birth and growth of cracks in metal parts subjected to repeated loading, has been a problem plaguing engineers since the Industrial Revolution and the advent of rotating or reciprocating machinery. Designing against metal fatigue was studied briefly in several aspects. Examples of fatigue failures were shown. Fatigue was classified by loading: uniaxial Fatigue, multiaxial fatigue, cumulative fatigue da¬mage. Fatigue design criteria were discussed: Infinite-Life Design, Safe-Life Design, Fail-Safe Design, and Damage Tolerant Design. Mitigation of notch effects by design, improvement of fatigue strength of metal parts by residual stress and surface finishing were discussed. Relative fatigue beha¬vior was studied under various environmantal conditions. Especially the effects of corrosion, temperature, fretting, and irradiation were covered.

  • Stall inception characteristics are researched to understand stall well. To realize different stall inception patterns, IGV stagger angle was changed. At design IGV stagger angle, spike, which is short length scale, is observed. Decreasing IGV stagger angle, spike changes to mode, which is long length scale, and further decreasing get multi cell. Compressor maps for each IGV stagger are shown to compare different stall inceptions. The characteristics of both spike and mode are confirmed in this experiment. Furthermore, transient from spike to mode is find. multi cell has 4cells and is little bit faster than mode. and multi cell shows 2nd, 3rd characteristics on compressor map.
