The flow characteristics in a stirred tank are very useful in a wide variety of industrial applications. Generally, the flow pattern, power consumption and mixing time in stirred vessels depend not only on the design of the impeller, but also on the tanks' geometry and internal structure. In this study, the analysis of an unstable and unsteady complicated flow characteristics generated by the interaction between the baffle shape and impeller were performed using the ANSYS FLUENT LES Turbulence Model. The study compared the predictions of CFD with the interaction between two types of rotating impellers (axial and radial flows) and the shapes of three baffles. The results of the comparison verified that the design model showed a relatively efficient trend in the mixing flow fields and characteristics around the impeller and baffles during agitation.

In the roll forming, a flat strip is progressively deformed by feeding it through a series of rotating rolls. There are various layouts for the tube toll-forming stages. The process sequences are as follows: leveling, roll-forming, welding, bead removing, seam annealing, cooling, sizing and cutting. Electric resistance welded(ERW) tubes have been widely used for the machinery parts, especially for hydroformed automotive parts. However conventional ERW tubes do not have a high formability because of hardening of welded portion by rapid cooling. Moreover the decrease in thickness of the welded portion during the grinding of the inner and outer bead may reduce the formability of the tube. In case of applying the tubular parts without grinding the bead, the flow of the fluid can be prevented due to the turbulent flow induced by the inner bead. In attempt to determine the optimal bead grinding amount in the roll forming process, in the present paper, the effects of the removal depth and width of the inner beads on the hydroformability are analyzed by the finite element simulation.

Stirred tank is widely used in various industries for mixing operations and chemical reactions for single- or multi-phase fluid systems. For designing agitator of high performance, quantity data of internal flow characteristics influenced by mixing performance are definitely confirmed but quantity analysis about the transient flow characteristics of complicate structure is recognized as difficult problem in the present. In this study, two models of commercial CFD code Fluent 6.3 used to propose suitable for the tank analysis. Agitation of Stirred tank is analyzed using a mixed model and the flow in the stirred tank is analyzed using a standard k-${\varepsilon}$ model. Multiple reference frame(MRF) and Sliding mesh(SM), the analysis techniques were used For compare a result of CFD with a visualization experiment result, to grasp internal flow and mixing characteristic in stirred tank and to present fundamental analysis method.

The rapid mixing process has been considered as an important step in water treatment. Since the coagulant dispersion into raw water by rapid mixer can influence on the flocculation and filtration efficiency, many researchers have developed various devices and mixing methodologies. Until now, they focused attention on only coagulant dose, pH. rotating velocity and G value but overlooked the real turbulent flow and mixer geometry in rapid mixer. Therefore this paper questions the significance of turbulent flows in rapid mixer and focuses on the analysis of turbulent fluid in various mixer geometry with CFD(Computational Fluid Dynamics). The results of the jar-tests using various geometries indicate that the turbidity removal rate in a circular jar without baffle is higher than that of a circular with baffle. And the turbidity removal rate in Hudson jar is also founded to be higher than in the circular jar with baffle. The CFD simulation of velocity fields in jar demonstrates that the differences of removal rates among the various geometries are largely due to the formation of the different turbulent fluids fields with different geometries.

This study deals with numerically comparing performance according to rudder shape called 'Twisted rudder and Wavy twisted rudder'. In comparison with conventional rudder, rudder with wavy shape has showed a better performance at high angles of attack($30^{\circ}{\sim}40^{\circ}$) due to delaying stall. But most of study concerned with wavy shape had been performed in uniform flow condition. In order to identify the characteristics behind a rotating propeller, the present study numerically carries out an analysis of resistance and self-propulsion for KCS with twisted rudder and wavy twisted rudder. The turbulence closure model, Realizable $k-{\epsilon}$, is employed to simulate three-dimensional unsteady incompressible viscous turbulent and separation flow around the rudder. The simulation of self-propulsion analysis is performed in two step, because of finding optimization case of wavy shape. The first step presents there are little difference between twisted rudder and case of H_0.65 wavy twisted rudder in delivered power. So two kind of rudders are employed from first step to compare lift-to-drag ratio and torque at high angles of attack. Consequently, the wavy twisted rudder is presented as a possible way of delaying stall, allowing a rudder to have a better performance containing superior lift-to-drag ratio and torque than twisted rudder at high angles of attack. Also, as we indicate the flow visualization, check the quantity of separation flow around the rudder.

The broadband and discrete sources of sound in small cooling fans of propeller type and centrifugal type were investigated to understand the turbulent vortex structures from many bladed fans using ANSI test plenum for small air-moving devices (AMDs). The noise measurement method uses the plenum as a test apparatus to determine the acoustic source spectral density function at each operating conditions similar to real engineering applications based on acoustic similarity laws. The characteristics of fans including the head rise vs. volumetric flow rate performance were measured using a performance test facility. The sound power spectrum is decomposed into two non-dimensional functions: an acoustic source spectral distribution function F(St,.phi.) and an acoustic system response function G(He,.phi.) where St, He, and .phi. are the Strouhal number, the Helmholtz number, and the volumetric flow rate coefficient, respectively. The autospectra of radiated noise measurements for the fan operating at several volumetric flow rates,.phi., are analyzed using acoustical similarity. The rotating stall in the small propeller fan with a bell-mouth guided is mainly due to a leading edge separation. It creates a blockage in the passage and the reduction in the flow rate. The sound power levels with respect to the rotational speeds were measured to reveal the mechanisms of stall and/or surge for different loading conditions and geometries, for example, fans installed with a impinging plate. Lee and Meecham (1993) studied the effect of the large-scale motions like impinging normally on a flat plate using Large-Eddy Simulation(LES) and Lighthill's analogy.[ASME Winter Annual Meeting 1993, 93-WA/NCA-22]. The dipole and quadrupole sources in the fans tested are shown closely related to the vortex structures involved using cross-correlations of the hot-wire and microphone signals.

An experimental study has been performed to study the effect of the base slant angle of a 1/10 scale two-dimensional vehicle-like body on its wake flow including the recirculating region, where the simplified shape of the body has been originated from a profile of a domestic passenger car. In the case of a Reynolds number based on the length of the model R=7.96*10$^{5}$ , the surface pressure coefficient, the mean velocity and the turbulent stresses have been measured, while the flow visualization technique using wool tuft has been adopted as well. When the base slant angle of the model is 15.deg., the free stream flowing parallel to the slant is observed to be separated from the lower edge of the slant, thus forming the smallest recirculating region. When the base slant angles are 30.deg. and 45.deg., the free streams are separated from the upper edge of the slant and the sizes of the recirculating zones are observed to be almost the same as when the base slant angle is 0.deg. From these observations, it is conjectured that between the base slant angles of 15.deg. and 30.deg. there exists a critical angle at which the size of the recirculating region becomes minimum and as the slant angle becomes larger than this critical angle the separation line moves along the slant towards the rear edge of the roof. Through the flow visualization technique, the existence of the two counter-rotating bubbles in the recirculating region has been clearly observed and verified.

A pump is considered to be submersible when a motor and a pump are integrated and operate while submerged in water. Submersible pumps mainly function as rejection pumps to prevent foods in densely populated areas, as cold water circulation pumps in large power plants, as pumps to supply irrigation water, as drainage pumps to prevent flooding of agricultural lands, as water supply intake pumps, and as inflow pumps for sewage treatment. The flow in such turbomachines (submersible pumps) inevitably involves various eddy currents. Since it is almost impossible to accurately grasp the complex three-dimensional flow structure and characteristics of a rotating turbomachine through actual testing, three-dimensional numerical analysis using computational fluid dynamics techniques measuring the flow field, velocity, and the pressure can be accurately predicted. In this study, the shape of the impeller was developed to reduce vibration and noise. This was done by increasing the efficiency of the existing submersible pump and reducing turbulence. In order to evaluate the pump's efficiency and turbulence reduction, we tried to analyze the flow using ANSYS Fluent V15.0, a commercial finite element analysis program. The results show that the efficiency of the pump was improved by 4.24% and the Reynolds number was reduced by 15.6%. The performance of a developed pump with reduced turbulence, vibration, and noise was confirmed.

This paper employs computational tools to predict power increase (or speed loss) and propulsion performances in waves of KVLCC2. Two-phase unsteady Reynolds averaged Navier-Stokes equations have been solved using finite volume method; and a realizable k-ε model has been applied for the turbulent closure. The free-surface is obtained by solving a VOF equation. Sliding mesh method is applied to simulate the flow around an operating propeller. Towing and self-propulsion computations in calm water are carried out to obtain the towing force, propeller rotating speed, thrust and torque at the self-propulsion point. Towing computations in waves are performed to obtain the added resistance. The regular short head waves of λ/LPP = 0.6 with 4 wave steepness of H/λ = 0.007, 0.017, 0.023 and 0.033 are taken into account. Four methods to predict speed-power relationship in waves are discussed; Taylor expansion, direct powering, load variation, resistance and thrust identity methods. In the load variation method, the revised ITTC-78 method based on the 'thrust identity' is utilized to predict propulsive performances in full scale. The propulsion performances in waves including propeller rotating speed, thrust, torque, thrust deduction and wake fraction, propeller advance coefficient, hull, propeller open water, relative rotative and propulsive efficiencies, and delivered power are investigated.
Drag reduction produced by the dilute solution of polymer under turbulent flow in a rotating disk apparatus(RDA) was investigated in this study for the purpose of potential application to the Ocean Thermal Energy Conversion(OTEC) system. Four different molecular weights of poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO) were used as drag reducing additives, and synthetic seawater was adopted as a solvent. Experiments were undertaken to observe the dependence of drag reduction on various factors such as polymer molecular weight, polymer concentration and the rotating speed of the disk. The concentration dependence on the drag reduction of this polymer system was shown to obey an empirical drag reduction equation of the Virk's universal correlation.
