  • In this paper, the feedforward control with least mean square (LMS) adaptive algorithm is proposed and examined to reduce rotating error by runout of an active magnetic bearing system. Using eddy-current type gap sensor fur control, the electrical runout caused by non-uniform material properties of sensor target produces rotational error amplified in feedback control loop, so this runout should be eliminated to increase rotating accuracy. The adaptive feedforward controller is designed and examined its tracking and stability performances numerically with established frequency response function. The tested grinding spindle system is manufactured with a 5.5 ㎾ internal motor and 5-axis active magnetic bearing system including 5 eddy current gap sensors which have approximately 15 ~ 30 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ of electrical runout. According to the experimental analysis, the error signal in radial bearings is reduced to less than 5 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ when it is rotating up to 50,000 rpm due to applying the feedforward control for first order harmonic frequency, and vibration of the spindle base is also reduced about same frequency.

  • A high-speed spindle can be very sensitive to rotating mass unbalance which has harmful effect on many machine tools. Therefore, the balancing procedure to reducevibration in rotating system is certainly needed for all high-speed spindles. An active balancing program using influence coefficient method and an active balancing device of an electro-magnetic type have been applied to the developed high-speed spindle system in this study. A reliable gain-scheduling control using influence coefficients of the reference model although system characteristics are changed is applied. The stability of reference influence coefficients is verified by frequency response functions. The active balancing experiment for the developed high-speed spindle during operation is well performed with an active balancing program and device. As a result, controlled unbalance responses are below the vibration limit at all rotating speed ranges with critical speed.

  • This paper deals with a theoretical method for the design of a biased asymmetric preswirl stator propulsion system which has been used to increase efficiency by the recovery of a propeller slipstream rotational energy by the counter rotating flow of a stator. In the case of full slow-speed ship, the upward flow is generated at the propeller plane by the after body hull form. The generated upward flow cancells the rotating flow of the propeller at the starboard part while it increases at port part. A biased asymmetric preswirl stator propulsion system consists of three blades at the port and one blade at the starboard which can recover the biased rotating flow effectively. This paper provides the design concept which gives more simple and a high degree of efficiency. The model tests for the designed compound propulsion system will be carried out later.

  • The major movement blocks of the container are the range between the apron and the designation points on yard in container terminals. The yard tractor drived by operator takes charge of it's movement in conventional container terminals. In automated container terminal, AGV(automatic guided vehicle) takes charge of a yard tractor's role and information of navigation path are ordered from upper control system. The automated container terminal facilities must have the docking system that guides landing zinc to execute high speed travelling and precision positioning. This paper describes the new docking method with the rotating LSB(laser slit beam) generator and two pair of photo receiver. The LSB generator is installed on the fixed ground and the photo receiver is implemented on the moving vehicle such as AGV. The proposed docking system is implemented to confirm it's function and accuracy. The accuracy of measured moving position is represented in ±5mm at 1 data sampling.

  • The current trend in automotive finishing industry is to use more electrostatic rotating bell (ESRB) need space to their higher transfer efficiency. The flow physics related with the transfer efficiency is strongly influenced by operating parameters. In order to improve their high transfer efficiency without compromising the coating quality, a better understanding is necessary to the ESRB application of metallic basecoat painting for the automobile exterior. This paper presents the results from experimental investigation of the ESRB spray to apply water-borne painting. The visualization, the droplet size, and velocity measurements of the spray flow were conducted under the operating conditions such as liquid flow rate, shaping airflow rate, bell rotational speed, and electrostatic voltage setting. The optical techniques used in here were a microscopic and light sheet visualization by a copper vapor laser, and a phase Doppler particle analyzer (PDPA) system. Water was used as paint surrogate for simplicity. The results show that the bell rotating speed is the most important influencing parameter for atomization processes. Liquid flow rate and shaping airflow rate significantly influence the spray structure. Based on the microscopic visualization, the atomization process occurs in ligament breakup mode, which is one of three atomization modes in rotating atomizer. In the spray transport zone, droplets tend to distribute according to size with the larger drops on the outer periphery of spray. In addition, the results of present study provide detailed information on the paint spray structure and transfer processes.

  • In this study, we consider the characteristics of channel flow in the presence of an infinite streamwise array of equispaced identical rotating circular cylinders. This flow configuration can be regarded as a model representing a micro channel or an internal heat exchanger with cylindrical vortex generators. A numerical parametric study has been carried out by varying Reynolds number based on the bulk mean velocity and the cylinder diameter, and the gap between the cylinders and the channel wall for some selected angular speeds. An immersed boundary method was employed to facilitate implementing the cylinders on a Cartesian grid system. No-slip condition is employed at all solid boundaries including the cylinders, and the flow is assumed to be periodic in the streamwise direction. The presence of the rotating circular cylinders arranged periodically in the streamwise direction causes a significant topological change of the flow, leading to increase of mean friction on the channel walls. More quantitative results as well as qualitative physical explanations are presented to justify the effectiveness of rotating cylinders to modify flow topology, which might be used to enhance heat transfer on the channel walls.

  • In this paper, we analyzed the resolution of tomographic images which can be obtained with Scanning Tomographic Acoustic Microscope(STAM) utilizing the acousto-optic effect. To realize this, lateral and depth resolutions of both ultrasonic transducer and specimen rotating device are obtained by using BFP tomographic reconstruction algorithm. Simulation results show that both rotating devices have a good depth resolution of $1.5{\lambda}$. For the lateral resolution, the specimen rotating device produces $0.53{\lambda}$ in the x and y directions and the transducer rotating device produces $0.56{\lambda}$ and $0.70{\lambda}$ in the x and y directions respectively. These results imply that the specimen rotating device is more suitable for STAM system construction.

  • The pump control valve is a butterfly valve that has an eccentric rotating axis. It is not only used as a butterfly valve to control the flow rate or pressure, but also as a check valve to prevent backward flow. A new design method of eccentric rotating axis is proposed to design the valve. The height of the rotating axis is determined through flow field analysis. A general purpose of computational fluid dynamics software system, Fluent is used to simulate the fluid flow. Flow field analysis is performed for various heights of the rotating axis and different opening angles of the valve. A characteristic function is defined for estimating the flow characteristics based on the results of flow field analysis. The characteristic function is defined in order to determine the height of the rotating axis. An optimization problem with a characteristic function is formulated to determine the amount of eccentricity. The height of the Totaling axis of the valve is determined through solving the optimization problem.

  • Excessive vibration in rotating machinery is a problem encountered in many different fields, causing such difficulties as fatigue of machinery components and failure of supporting bearings. Passive techniques, though sometimes limited in their capabilities, have been used in the past to attenuated vibrations. Recently active techniques have been developed to provide vibration control perform beyond that provided by their passive counters. Most often, the focus of active control methods has been to suppress rotating machinery displacements. In cases where vibration results in bearing failures, displacement suppression may not be the best choice of control approaches (it can, in fact, increase dynamic bearing loads which would be even more harmful to bearings). This paper presents two optimal control methods for attenuating steady state vibrations in rotating machinery. One method minimizes shaft displacements while the other minimizes dynamic bearing reaction forces. The two methods are applied to a model of a typical rotating machinery system and their results are compared. It is found that displacement minimization can increase bearing loads, while bearing load minimization, on the other hand, decreases bearing loads.
