Counter-Rotating Type Pumping Unit (Impeller Speeds in Smart Control)

  • Turbo-pumps have weak points, such as the pumping operation is unstable on the positive slope of the head curve and/or the cavitation occurs at the low suction head. To improve simultaneously both weak points, the first author invented the unique pumping unit composed of the tandem impellers and the peculiar motor with the double rotational armatures. The front and the rear impellers are driven by the inner and the outer armatures of the motor, respectively. Both impeller speeds are automatically and smartly adjusted in response to the pumping discharge, while the rotational torques between both impellers/armatures are counter-balanced. Such speeds contribute to suppress successfully not only the unstable operation at the low discharge but also the cavitation at the high discharge, as verified with the axial flow type pumping unit in the previous paper. Continuously, this paper investigates experimentally the effects of the tandem impeller profiles on the pump performances and the rotational speeds against the discharge, using the impellers whose loads are low and/or high at the normal discharge. The worthy remarks are that (a) the unstable operation is suppressed as expected and the shut off power is scarcely large in the smart control, (b) the blade profile contributes to determine the discharge giving the maximum/minimum rotational speed where the reverse flow may incipiently appears at the front impeller inlet, (c) the tandem impeller profiles scarcely affect the rotational speeds, while the loads of the front and the rear impellers are same, but (d) the impeller with the low load must run faster and the impeller with the high load must run slower at the same discharge to take the same rotational torque, and (e) the reverse flow at the inlet and the swirling velocity component at the outlet of the front impeller with the high load require making the rotational speed of the rear impeller with low load fairly faster at the lower discharge.

소형 표적 탐지를 위한 파노라믹 적외선 영상 향상 장치 및 경보시스템 구현 (The Realization of Panoramic Infrared Image Enhancement and Warning System for Small Target Detection)

  • 본 논문에서는 소형 위협체를 조기에 탐지하여 위치를 알려주는 파노라믹 적외선 영상 경보 장치를 구현하였고, 경보 성능 향상을 위한 적외선 영상 향상 기법을 제안하였다. 구현 장치는 센서 헤드 유닛, 신호 처리 유닛 등으로 구성된다. 센서 헤드 유닛은 1차원 다중 배열 적외선 센서를 정속으로 고속 회전하여 360도의 넓은 시계 영역을 가지는 파노라믹 열영상을 획득한다. 신호 처리 유닛은 파노라믹 영상을 90도의 부영상으로 나누고, 각 부영역의 통계적 특성에 따라 적응적 평탄역값(adaptive plateau value)을 구한다 그리고 적응적 평탄역값으로 히스토그램을 변화시킴으로써 위협체을 두드러지게 하였으며, 실시간 처리를 위하여 DSP와 FPGA를 이용하여 장치를 구현하였다. 구현 시스템에 제안한 영상 향상 기법을 적용한 결과 기존 기법에 비해 오경보율이 낮음과 시각적으로 위협체의 식별이 용이함을 확인하였다.

A Study on Current Characteristics Based on Design and Performance Test of Current Generator of KRISO's Deep Ocean Engineering Basin

  • To build an environment facility of a large-scale ocean basin, various detailed reviews are required, but it is difficult to find data that introduces the related research or construction processes on the environment facility. The current generator facility for offshore structure safety evaluation tests should be implemented by rotating the water of the basin. However, when the water in the large basin rotates, relatively large flow irregularities may occur and the uniformity may not be adequate. In this paper, design and review were conducted to satisfy the performance goals of the DOEB through computational numerical analysis on the shape of the waterway and the flow straightening devices to form the current in the large tank. Based on this, the head loss, which decreases the flow rate when the large tank water rotates through the water channel, was estimated and used as the pump capacity (impeller) design data. The impeller of the DOEB current generator was designed through computational numerical analysis (CFD) based on the lift surface theory from the axial-type impeller shape for satisfying the head loss of the waterway and maximum current velocity. In order to confirm the performance of the designed impeller system, the flow rate and flow velocity performance were checked through factory test operation. And, after installing DOEB, the current flow rate and velocity performance were reviewed compare with the original design target values. Finally, by measuring the current velocity of the test area in DOEB formed through the current generator, the spatial current distribution characteristics in the test area were analyzed. Through the analysis of the current distribution characteristics of the DOEB test area, it was confirmed that the realization of the maximum current velocity and the average flow velocity distribution, the main performance goals in the waterway design process, were satisfied.

나선형 흡기포트의 선회유동 특성에 관한 실험적 연구 (An experimental study on the swirl flow characteristics of a helical intake port)

  • This experimental study was mainly investigated on the swirl flow characteristics in the cylinder generated by a helical intake port. LDA system was used for the measurement of in-cylinder velocity fields. Tangential and axial velocity profiles, with varying valve lifts, valve eccentricity ratios and axial distance, were measured. When the intake valve was set in the cylinder center, we could find that in-cylinder swirl flow fields were composed of a forced vortex motion and a free vortex motion in the vicinity of the cylinder center and the cylinder wall respectively. In case of valve eccentricity ratio, N$_{y}$ = 0.45, the vortex flow which rotates to the opposite direction of a main rotating flow in the cylinder was found. And the reverse flow toward the cylinder head surface was also found in axial velocity profile and it showed the tendency of the linear decrease in the region of 0.leq.Y/B.leq.1.2.2.

  • Centrifugal pumps consume considerable amount of energy in various industrial applications. Therefore, improvement of the efficiency of these machines has become a major challenge. Cavitation is a phenomenon which decreases the pump efficiency and even causes structural demage. Hence, the goal of this paper is to investigate the cavitation problem in the single-stage and double-stage centrifugal pumps. The Volume of Fraction (VOF) method has been used for the numerical simulations together with Rayliegh-Plesset model for the gas-liquid two-phase flow inside the pump. In order to capture the turbulent phenomena, the standard k-${\varepsilon}$ turbulence model has been adopted, and the simulations have been done as unsteady cases. In addition, the motion of the rotating parts has been simulated using Multi Reference Frame(MRF) method. The results are presented and compared in terms of hydraulic head and NPSH for both the single-stage and double-stage pumps. The H-Q curves show the effects of cavitation on decreasing the pumps performances.

Thrust Characteristics and Nozzle Role of Water Jet Propulsion

  • Surface pressure integration and momentum method were respectively performed to evaluate the impeller thrust and the system thrust of a contra-rotating axial flow water jet propulsion, and an interesting phenomenon so-called thrust paradox was revealed. To explain the paradox, the impeller thrust and the system thrust were physically and theoretically analyzed, the results show that the impeller thrust is head involved and is determined by the hydraulic parameters upstream and downstream the impeller, while the momentum method depicted by a classic equation is valid simply under the best efficiency point. Consequently, the role of a water jet propulsion nozzle was deduced that the nozzle is mainly to limit the flow rate that crosses the impeller and to assure the system working under the best efficiency condition apart from its ability to produce momentum difference. Related mathematical formula expressed the nozzle diameter is the dominant variable used to calculate the working condition of the water jet propulsion. Therefore the nozzle diameter can be steadily estimated by the former expression. The system thrust scaling characteristics under various speeds were displayed lastly.

휠 디스크 스피닝 성형기 개발 (Development of the Wheel Disc Spinning Machine)

  • The spinning machine has been developed for a bus and truck wheel disc which is manufactured by spinning process method. This machine has the mechanical structure with bed, 2-column, cross head, 2-vertical slide, 2-horizontal slide with forming roller, clamp slide and main spindle similar to large size vertical lathe. Main spindle attached the mandrel is rotated about 500rpm drived by 280kW power DC motor, and a rotating black material pressed on the mandrel with the clamp slide is spinformed by 2-forming rollers which are attached inner end of the 2-horizontal slides. The 2-vertical and 2-horizontal slides are actuated by the hydraulic cylinder which is controlled by the servo valve individially, and these servo valves are controlled by control signal of the CNC controller which is computed with position signal feedbacked from the encoder sensor. The developed machine can manufacture wheel disc of various section profile without mandrel change because section profile is easily modified using program editing in the CNC controller processor. The wheel disc manufactured by spinning process method has many advantages that the endurance is increased by 2 times and the weight is decreased by 30% compared with a conventional disc.

  • In this paper we present the effects that valve train design parameters and operating conditions have on the valve rotation properties of a diesel engine. Rotation of intake and exhaust valves are very closely related to the long term durability of diesel engines. of the valves do not rotate even at a rated engine speed, it causes the uneven wear of the valve seat and valve head contact area, which eventually shortens the engine life. Because the rated speed of a diesel engine is relatively lower than that of a gasoline engine, the operating condition of a diesel engine produces tough environment for valve rotation. Therefore, the valve rotation is an important problem which should be solved in the early stage of engine development. In this study, we developed a new technique to measure the valve rotation and shaking motion simultaneously using three proximity sensors. Valve train rotating properties of a diesel engine were measured under various engine operating conditions.

고밀도 자기기록 시스템에서 발생하는 와전류에 의한 자기 기록 필드 영향 분석 (Eddy Current Effects on the High Density Magnetic Recording System)

  • 자기 기록 시스템은 시간의 흐름에 따라 기록 밀도는 높아지고 있고 또한 기록 속도 역시 빨라지고 있다. 더욱 빠른 기록 속도의 요구 치로 인하여 자기 기록 헤드에 인가되어지는 기록 주파수 역시 높아져야 하고 또한 기록이 일어나는 기록 미디어의 회전 속도 역시 빨라져야 한다. 이와 같은 두 가지 요건은 헤드와 기록 미디어에서 와전류를 발생시키게 된다. 기록 헤드에서는 기록 주파수에 의해 발생되는 와전류가 존재한다. 그리고 기록 미디어에서는 기록 주파수에 의해 발생되는 와전류와 회전하는 미디어의 선속도에 의해 발생하는 와전류가 존재하게 된다. 본 논문에서는 비선형 3차원 유한 요소법을 이용하여 자기 기록 헤드에서 발생하는 와전류와 기록 미디어에서 발생하는 두 종류의 와전류의 분포를 분석하고 이와 같이 발생한 와전류가 자기 기록시스템에서 자기 기록 필드에 미치는 영향에 대해서 연구하였다.

  • 현재 몇 가지의 제품으로 시장에 출시되어 가정에 조금씩 보급되기 시작한 홈 서비스 로봇은 각각의 제품이 청소, 도난방지 감시, 애완용 등의 특정한 기능을 가지고 가정에서 쉽게 사용 할 수 있도록 날로 발전을 더해가고 있다. 그러나 이러한 현재의 로봇들은 대부분 탑재된 기능과 인공지능이 결합하여 스스로 동작하는 자동화 로봇의 특징만을 지니고 있을 뿐이다. 홈 서비스 로봇의 정의에 충실한 사용자와의 커뮤니케이션의 기능은 거의 전무 하며, UI를 이용한 사용자 인터페이스의 환경에 의존할 뿐이다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 현재 홈서비스의 로봇의 한계성을 극복하고, 저렴하며 활용성이 높은 새로운 홈서비스 로봇의 모델을 제시한다.
