  • In this study, the rotary bending fatigue test was carried out with low carbon steel(SM25C). The specimens were heat-treated in order to change the grain size, and investigated items are fatigue limit, small crack initiation, fatigue crack propagation behavior and possibility of fatigue life prediction according to the different grain size. The summarized result are as follows ; Fatigue limit of the smooth specimen was dependent upon the grain size. The fatigue crack initiation of the small grain size specimen was delayed more than that of the large grain size specimen. And the small cracks of small grain size specimen were distributed in the narrow region of the main crack circumference contrary to the large grain size specimen. The main crack was grown along the grain boundary having co-alliance with small cracks. The experiment material has quantitatively disclosed the possibility of fatigue life prediction because the fatigue crack propagation behavior is dependent upon the grain size.

  • Objectives: This study compared the cyclic fatigue resistance of One Curve (C wire) and F6 Skytaper (conventional austenite nickel-titanium [NiTi]), and 2 instruments with thermos-mechanically treated NiTi: Protaper Next X2 (M wire) and Hyflex CM (CM wire). Materials and Methods: Ten new instruments of each group (size: 0.25 mm, 6% taper in the 3 mm tip region) were tested using a rotary bending machine with a 60° curvature angle and a 5 mm curvature radius, at room temperature. The number of cycles until fracture was recorded. The length of the fractured instruments was measured. The fracture surface of each fragment was examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). The data were analyzed using one-way analysis of variance and the post hoc Tukey test. The significance level was set at 0.05. Results: At 60°, One Curve, F6 Skytaper and Hyflex CM had significantly longer fatigue lives than Protaper Next X2 (p < 0.05). No statistically significant differences were found in the cyclic fatigue lives of One Curve, F6 Skytaper, and Hyflex CM (p > 0.05). SEM images of the fracture surfaces of the different instruments showed typical features of fatigue failure. Conclusions: Within the conditions of this study, at 60° and with a 5 mm curvature radius, the cyclic fatigue life of One Curve was not significantly different from those of F6 Skytaper and Hyflex CM. The cyclic fatigue lives of these 3 instruments were statistically significantly longer than that of Protaper Next.

  • Rotary bending fatigue tests were performed to investigate the effects of 2-phase matrix structure on fatigue limit with prepared specimens in high strength ductile irons. Two types of the specimens with different microstructures have been used. Series A has sorbite and series B has bainite. Fatigue limits of both specimens are improved comparing with as cast specimen. The fatigue limit is higher in series B than in series A. The reason why the fatigue limit of series A shows inferiority to that of series B is due to the transition of micro fatigue cracks to mesocrack occurs very rapidly, so increased stress intensity factor drives the fatigue crack growth. The higher fatigue limit of series B which has bainite is caused by the ${\gamma}$ layer contained in microstructure impede the rapid growth of micro fatigue crack to mesocrack and ${\alpha}$ layer around graphite has the higher capacity for the absorption of plastic deformation energy than sorbite.

  • In this study, to improve the effect of the surface treatment, the shape design of shot ball is proposed. The fatigue effects of shot peening by the cut wire shot ball and the rounded cut wire shot ball are compared. The rotary bending and tensile fatigue tests are conducted on a spring steel to evaluate fatigue lives. The residual compressive stresses by the rounded cut wire shot ball is higher than by the rounded cut wire shot ball. This consequently increase the fatigue life and the reliability of surface treatment. Thus, to obtain optimum, repeatable and reliable shot peening effect the shape of the shot ball must be round.

  • Fatigue strength of offshore structures or ship structures is significantly decreased due to corrosive environment condition such as sea water and/or coal, crude oil of cargoes, compared to that of on shore structures. In corrosive environment, fatigue strength of structures also depends on characteristics of weld material heat affected zone(HAZ). In this research work, rotary bending fatigue tests of parent material and HAZ of TMCP steel were performed in order to investigate the initiation and propagation of cracks both in air and in NaCl solution. Comparison of fatigue strength In relation with the salinity of NaCl were carried out as well. According to the test results weld material or HAZ of TMCP steel showed higher fatigue strength than that of the parent material. The fatigue strength of TMCP steel decreases drastically in NaCl solution compared to that of in air environment. In particular, more reduced fatigue strength is observed in 1% NaCl solution than in 3% NaCl solution.

  • This research was performed to study the effect of the Ni + Mo addition on the fatigue properties in 12Cr steel. After heat treatment of 12Cr steel and 12Cr-Ni-Mo steel, tensile tests, impact tests, hardness tests, and rotary bending fatigue tests were performed, respectively. The fatigue fracture surface was observed and analyzed using SEM and EDS. The fatigue limit of 12Cr steel was 554 MPa, which was 49 MPa higher than 505 MPa of 12Cr-Ni-Mo steel. Striations, which are the shape of the typical fatigue fracture surface, were observed at the fracture surface near the starting point of fatigue fracture in the 12Cr steel and 12Cr-Ni-Mo steel. However, unlike the case of 12Cr steel, 12Cr-Ni-Mo steel also had a mixed fracture surface with the fatigue and the ductile fracture surface. When brittle non-metallic inclusions exist near the starting point of fatigue failure, the crack propagation was further promoted and the fatigue life was drastically reduced.

  • The shaft with the circular cross section has symmetric structural combination parts to keep the rotating balance. Hence the crack usually initiates from symmetric combination parts due to the stress concentration of these parts. In this study to estimate the fatigue behavior of symmetric cracks, the fatigue test was performed by using a rotary bending tester and the specimen with symmetric defects in circular cross section. The characteristics of crack initiation and propagation on the symmetric surface cracks in circular cross section were examined. We also observed the internal crack using the oxidation coloring method and investigated the fatigue behavior using the relationship between the surface crack and the internal crack. As a result, the fatigue life of symmetric cracks was reduced by 35% compared to that of a single crack. We examined the characteristics of fatigue behavior of elements with symmetric cracks using internal crack propagation rate and maximum stress intensity factor range that were obtained from an approximation method.

  • We examined the governing factors of fatigue limit in annealed and austempered ductile iron specimens machined micro hole(dia.<0.4mm) in rotary bending fatigue test. Also, the quantitative relationship between fatigue limit and maximum defect size in specimens was investigated. Artificial defect(micro-pit type, dia.<0.4mm) on specimen surface did not bring about an obvious reduction of fatigue limit in austempered ductile iton(ADI) as compared with annealed ductile iron. According to the investigation of ${\sqrt{area}}_c$ which is the critical defect size to crack initiation at artificial defect, ${\sqrt{area}}_c$ of ADI was larger than that of annealed ductile iron. This shows that the situation of crack initiation at artificial defect in ADI is more difficult in comparison with annealed ductile iron. Maximum defect size is one of the important parameters to predict fatigue limit. And, the quantitative relationship, between the fatigue limit ${\sigma}_{\omega}$ and the maximum defect size ${\sqrt{area}}_{max}$ can be expressed to ${\sigma}_{\omega}^n{\cdot}{\sqrt{area}}_{max}=C_2$ where, $C_2$ are constant. Moreover, it is possible to explain the difference in fatigue limit between, austempered and annealed ductile iron by introducing the parameter ${\delta}(=N_{sg}/N_{total})$in a plain spectimen.

  • The corrosion fatigue test was conducted in air to investigate the corrosion fatigue strength of SM 30 C steel by which was corroded in the under sea and surface in the conditions of 3.0% NaCl salt solution. The fatigue tests were carried out on a rotary bending testing machine of cantilever type. The corrosion effect of the sea surface conditionwas served more than that of the under sea condition which was due ti the periodic contact of air thus accelerate the corrosion. The difference of the fatgue strength between sea surface and under sea conditions decreased with increase of stree level and corroded period. Inthe case of the solid shaft and thickness 2mm of hollow shaft, the difference of corrosion fatigue strength decreased as stress level and corrosion periodic increasing. Onthe contrary in the case of thickness 1mm of hollow sgaft, the difference of it increased as stress level, corrosionn periooodic increasing and also the condition of corrosion chaanged. The main factors affecting the degradation of fatigue strength due to corrosion were the reduction of sectional area and the increase of surface roughness. The interference phenomenon increase with stress level got higher.
